    Prices of chicken have skyrocketed in the past days in Pakistan, rising by Rs. 200 per kilogram to reach Rs 697 per kg, reports Bol News.

    Prices in Gujranwala have begun selling chicken at will, disregarding the official government rate of Rs 680 per kg, Samaa has reported.

    Like other cities in the country, in Faisalabad too, the price of chicken had soared beyond expectations.

    Within a month, after an increase of Rs25, it has reached up to Rs750 per kg.

    Chicken sellers in Rawalpindi staged a demonstration outside the Rawalpindi Press Club to reject the official prices of chicken meat. They also observed a full-fledged strike over the price mechanism.

    The rate fixed by the government is Rs. 435 while the price of chicken has surged in the open market, with live chicken selling at Rs550 per kg and chicken meat at Rs850 per kg.

    Pak Suzuki Motor Company Limited (PSMCL) has reported a substantial net loss of Rs9.68 billion for the fiscal year that ended on June 30, 2023. The loss was attributed to import restrictions and weakened demand, causing a significant increase compared to last year’s Rs17.238 million loss.

    The drop in sales was due to operational disruptions caused by inventory shortages. The loss per share (LPS) reached Rs117.58 for this year, a stark contrast to the Rs0.21 LPS recorded from January to June 2022. Despite these challenges, the cost of sales remained stable at Rs39.037 billion, compared to Rs108.415 billion the previous year.

    Financial expenses surged to Rs10.141 billion from Rs1.842 billion last year, contributing to the increased losses. However, the company did manage to achieve a Rs3.238 billion profit for the quarter ending on June 30, a significant improvement from the Rs442.989 million recorded during the same quarter the previous year. Earnings per share for this quarter were Rs39.36, compared to Rs5.38 per share in the previous year.

    Experts noted that the second-quarter results exceeded expectations due to increased gross margins from car price hikes. The company also gained from finance income of Rs2.6 billion due to exchange rate gains.

    During this time, the company’s revenue dropped by 67 per cent year-on-year and 2 per cent quarter-on-quarter due to lower sales volume caused by disruptions in raw material supply and reduced demand. Despite challenges, the company achieved a 10 per cent gross profit margin in 2QCY23, a significant increase from 4 per cent the previous year.

    According to The News, the auto sector faces challenges like obtaining Letters of Credit (LCs) for imports and sluggish demand due to high prices and interest rates. Car sales declined 57 per cent year-on-year in the first month of fiscal year 2023–24, as reported by the Pakistan Automotive Manufacturers Association (PAMA). PAMA-registered car manufacturers sold only 5,092 units in July, a 16 per cent decrease from the previous month.

    Despite the challenges faced by Pakistan’s auto industry, including low sales and various disruptions, it’s worth noting that car prices in the country remain at their highest point.

    The Current contacted him to ask if the price was a mistake. He confidently said it wasn’t and truly thinks his well-kept car is worth the Rs1.5 million price. He’s received many offers and a lot of interest in his nearly 30-year-old car. He also mentioned that he’s the third owner of this 1995 Honda Civic.

    It is noteworthy that a mere two years ago, cars of the same model year were being listed on online marketplaces for a significantly lower price, less than Rs600,000. However, the present scenario witnesses a surge in the asking price for these vehicles.

    This trend is not exclusive to a particular model but rather extends to nearly all used cars, given that even the cheapest car from Pak Suzuki Motors, the Suzuki Alto, now commands a price of nearly Rs3 million. Consequently, a considerable number of individuals, constrained by budgetary limitations, opt for pre-owned cars.

    While the price might raise eyebrows for a car of this kind, die-hard Honda Civic enthusiasts might willingly pay this hefty amount. That’s especially true if the car’s condition lives up to the seller’s claims.

    Given its popularity among Pakistan’s racing community and its appeal to those wanting to build a car from scratch, the price could find its justified niche.

    The automobile industry of Pakistan experienced a severe blow in the fiscal year 2022-23, with car sales plummeting by 56 per cent to a mere 126,879 units, according to data shared by the Pakistan Automotive Manufacturers Association (PAMA) on Tuesday. This significant decline can be attributed to various factors, including the non-availability of completely knocked down kits (CKDs), exorbitant car prices, a surge in auto financing, and the reduced purchasing power of buyers.

    In June 2023, the monthly sales took a substantial hit, dropping by 79 per cent compared to the same period last year, reaching a meager 6,034 units. However, it is worth noting that the sales in June were 10 per cent higher when compared to the sales in May.

    Among the car manufacturers, Honda Atlas Car (HCAR) witnessed the most notable increase in sales, with a month-on-month surge of 253 per cent to 307 units in June. This growth can be attributed to the lower sales base in the previous month and the availability of necessary car parts.

    Pak Suzuki, on the other hand, experienced a modest month-on-month growth of 2 per cent in June, with sales reaching 3,009 units. The surge in Bolan sales by 67 per cent contributed to this increase. However, the company’s bookings took a significant hit, plunging by 57 per cent to 65,364 units in the fiscal year 2022-23.

    Indus Motor Company, responsible for assembling Toyota cars, observed a 7 per cent increase in bookings on a month-on-month basis, reaching 1,846 units in June. Nonetheless, the company’s total car sales for the fiscal year 2022-23 amounted to 31,104 units, reflecting a decline of 58 per cent year-on-year.

    Hyundai Nishat Motor witnessed an 11 per cent month-on-month increase in sales, with the sales of Tucson surging by 61 per cent to 313 units and Elantra sales increasing by 28 per cent to 88 units in June.

    Shifting focus to the tractor segment, Millat Tractors (MTL) experienced a 42 per cent month-on-month increase in bookings, reaching 2,136 units in June. Conversely, Al Ghazi Tractors (AGTL) recorded sales of 854 units, marking a decline of 57 per cent. Overall, the total tractor industry sales for the fiscal year 2022-23 amounted to 30,942 units, representing a decrease of 48 per cent due to factors such as floods, plant shutdowns, lower consumer buying power, and higher prices.

    Looking ahead, the high interest rates and the significant increase in auto prices resulting from the depreciation of the Pakistani rupee against the dollar are expected to continue negatively impacting auto sales in the fiscal year 2024. Furthermore, restrictions on opening letters of credit (LCs) for importing CKDs by auto assemblers may lead to lower plant capacity utilisation and, in extreme cases, plant shutdowns across the industry.

    Observed first day of Shawwal, the tenth month of the Islamic calendar, Eid-ul-Fitr is a time for Muslims to come together with family and friends to offer prayers, exchange gifts, and share meals. It is also a way for Muslims to show their gratitude to Allah for giving them the strength to fast and to seek forgiveness for any sins committed during the year.

    However, in Pakistan, small shops and businesses are struggling to make ends meet during this year’s Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations. The high levels of inflation, which have hit their highest levels in decades, have left many businesses unable to make enough money to cover their monthly expenses, including rent and utility bills.

    For many small shops and businesses in Pakistan, the last days of Ramadan or before Eid-ul-Fitr used to be a guaranteed earner—a big-spending week that could match the take from the rest of the year. However, this year, many worry they will not even make enough to pay for their monthly expenses.

    A tailor in Canal Bank, Lahore, stated that each year, he was fully booked and had so many orders that he couldn’t take orders after the middle of the month of Ramzan. However, this year, he said, “For the first time, we are accepting orders in the last week of Ramzan as there is not much work.”

    Tailors in Lahore who used to charge Rs1,500 are now charging Rs2,500 or Rs2,200. Even well-known brands or shops are charging more, which is leaving consumers with no option but to go for cheap ready-made clothes or clothes that are available on sale.

    The South Asian country of more than 220 million people saw year-on-year inflation hit 35.4 per cent in March. Food prices surged more than 47 per cent in 12 months, with transport costs rising by 55 per cent.

    Pakistan is deeply in debt and needs to introduce tough reforms to unlock a tranche of a $6.5 billion bailout from the International Monetary Fund in order to avoid default. The economy has been wrecked by years of financial mismanagement and political instability—a situation exacerbated by a global energy crisis and devastating floods that left a third of the country under water last year.

    An artificial jewelry shop owner in Anarkali, Lahore, Zaryab, said, “There is a significant difference between last year’s sales and this year’s. People come to our stall, see 3-4 necklaces or bangles, ask the price, and then leave.”

    The high inflation has significantly reduced the purchasing power of Pakistanis, and people are mostly focusing on fulfilling their essential needs. Noman Khan, an electrical engineer at ACE Pakistan, stated that this Eid, he has not been able to buy clothes for himself as he had to buy clothes for his two kids and wife. He added that “From artificial jewelry to kids’ clothes, everything is so expensive this year that I have no option but to wear old clothes. Although, I made sure that my kids and wife at least get what they want to wear this Eid.”

    In conclusion, the struggle for small businesses in Pakistan during Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations is a stark reminder of the country’s economic challenges. While many Pakistanis are still managing to celebrate the holiday, the high levels of inflation have made it difficult for many to enjoy the festivities.

    Pakistan’s auto sector records 98% sales growth in March despite high prices

    Despite high car prices, Pakistan’s auto sector has seen a growth of 98 per cent in March, selling about 7,201 units compared to 3,642 units sold in the previous month. The increase has provided a ray of hope to the auto sector, which has picked up some pace after several months.

    However, car sales, including sales of non-Pakistan Automotive Manufacturers Association (PAMA) vehicles, plunged 68 per cent in March compared to the same month last year, due to non-production days and a decline in purchasing power.

    The monthly growth is due to better volumetric sales of Pak Suzuki Motor Company (PSMC) and Indus Motors, which increased by 475 per cent and 6 per cent respectively on a month-on-month basis. Arif Habib Limited also stated that due to rising inflationary pressure, consumers have switched to affordable vehicles of below 1000cc, which increased by 423 per cent.

    Despite the recent growth, fears of a slowdown still exist due to measures taken by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) to curb imports, resulting in production limitations as auto assemblers require prior permission to import completely knocked-down (CKD) units and raw materials.

    Sales of all other variants of cars, jeeps, tractors, pick-ups, three-wheelers and two-wheelers have also witnessed a year-on-year decline in March 2023, according to data released by PAMA a day earlier.

    In the first nine months of fiscal year 2022-23, 85,776 units were sold, down 50 per cent from 172,612 units sold during the same period in FY22. Sales of 1300cc and above cars were recorded at 2,913 units, down 67 per cent compared to the same month of the previous year’s sales of 9,280 units. In March 2023, 1,000cc cars recorded sales of 964 units, including 475 units of Suzuki Cultus and 489 units of Suzuki WagonR, against 2,410 units in the same month last year.

    Further breakdown of the data reveals that below 1000cc vehicles recorded a sale of 3,324 units, lower by 70 per cent than 11,109 units sold last year. Suzuki’s new Alto sold 2,542 units in March 2023 compared to 9,814 units in March 2022.

    Buses and trucks saw a decrease to 308 units in March from 565 units in the same month last year, while sales of jeeps and pick-ups decreased to 2,150 units from 4,403 units sold during the same period last year. Sales of tractors dropped to 2,984 units from 5,651 units in March 2022, while sales of rickshaws and motorbikes also decreased to 84,307 units in March against 151,010 units in the same period last year.

    PSMC recorded a jump of 475 per cent on a monthly basis to 5,628 units primarily due to the availability of CKD parts amid an easing of LC issues, while Indus Motors reported an increase of 6 per cent month-on-month to 1,912 units in March. However, Honda Car (HCAR) sales declined by 49 per cent month-on-month to 835 units in March due to the closure of the plant for 23 days on account of CKD issues.

    Hyundai sales were down 34 per cent month-on-month, with Tucson down 46 per cent month-on-month to 380 units and Sonata down 40 per cent month-on-month to 118 units in the period under review.
