MAO College principal removed over ‘negligence’ in professor’s suicide case

The principal of Government MAO College, Dr Farhan Ebadat Khan has been removed from his post after he was found ‘negligent’ in the case involving harassment allegations against deceased lecturer Afzal Mehmood. His negligence had driven the lecturer to commit suicide.

As per reports, Dr Farhan has been directed to report to the Punjab Higher Education Department (HED). Riaz Hashmi has been given charge of the college for now.

Last week, Punjab HED had issued a summary after conducting an inquiry into the case, which expressed serious concerns over the attitude of Dr Farhan regarding the death of the lecturer.

The summary issued by the education department had called for
action against the principal saying his attitude was “very rude and lazy”.

Reports further reveal that Dr Farhan had failed to take necessary measures to address the concerns of the late lecturer after he was proven innocent by the college harassment committee.

On these bases, the education department had recommended the elimination of Dr Farhan.

MAO College lecturer Muhammad Afzal Nadeem had committed suicide after a female student accused him of harassment. The allegations were later proven to be false.

However, college authorities had failed to clear Afzal’s name by not issuing an official notification. Afzal, in his suicide note, had said that the incident had caused considerable damage to his reputation.

Sialkot’s historic Hindu temple celebrates Diwali after 72 years

Sialkot’s ancient Hindu temple witnessed Diwali celebrations after a long hiatus of almost 72 years.

The Shawala Teja Singh Temple closed since Partition was opened for worshippers earlier this year on the directives of Prime Minister Imran Khan. Members of the Hindu community had long been demanding for the temple to be opened.

According to reports, the historic temple which is believed to be more than 1,000 years old was illuminated by the Hindu devotees to mark the festival. Local Hindu leaders also cut Diwali cake and lit clay lamps at the temple.

The devotees started Diwali celebrations with worship and rituals and prayed for the unity, peace and integrity of Pakistan.

Tight security arrangements were in place to ensure that no untoward incident takes place.

Made of granite and sandstone, the temple sits high on a sand dune in a congested, residential neighborhood. Over the years, the temple has fallen prey to neglect as a result of which the intricate carvings on the thick outside pillars have long faded or been scrubbed off by drug addicts. The sacred idols of Lord Shiva in the building have also been stolen or destroyed. However, work on the restoration of the temple is currently underway and officials say that it will be restored to its former glory.

  • Five-step guide to breast self-examination

    Five-step guide to breast self-examination

October is often referred to as Pinktober in a bid to raise awareness about breast cancer among the masses, given the stigma attached to using the word “breast.”

However, given the spread of the disease, it is absolutely essential to spread awareness on the topic. Early detection is the best way to combat the disease and one way to detect it is breast self-examination.

Here is a step-by-step guide on how you can do Breast Self-Examination (BSE):

    Know what to look for

Begin by looking at your breasts in the mirror with
your shoulders straight and your arms on your hips. Your breasts should be
their normal size, shape, and color, and they should be evenly shaped without
visible swelling or any other changes.

Try to sense how your breasts feel at different times of the month

This can change during your menstrual cycle and knowing
your breast shape and size could bring any abnormality to your attention.

    Do breast self-examinations yourself

There are different ways to perform a self-exam. You can do the examination lying down. While lying down breast tissue is more spread out and easier to feel. Or you can perform one in the shower where soap and water can help your fingers move more easily over your breast skin.

    Know what to feel for

Lie flat and place your right hand behind your head.
Using the first three fingers of your left hand, feel the breast tissue on your
right breast. Be sure to use the pads of the fingers, not just the very tips.

Feel for anything that feels hard and round. Then
start at your armpit area and work your way towards the center of each breast.
Move across to the middle of your body until you only feel the breastbone.

Make sure you use three different levels of
pressure to feel the tissue: light pressure at the top for tissue just under
the skin, medium pressure to check tissue in the middle of the breast, and
deeper pressure to feel the tissue closest to the chest wall. Make sure to
apply each pressure level to each area before moving on. Do this with both
    breasts.

Finally, you should squeeze each nipple gently to
    check for discharge.

    When to take an action

If you feel something uncommon, or see something
different, schedule an appointment with your doctor promptly. Don’t delay.

  • Khaadi’s Kanteen bursts with positive energy

Khaadi’s Kanteen bursts with positive energy

Nestled happily on the first floor of Khaadi at Bilawal Chowrangi, Kanteen is a sight for sore eyes with its bohemian look, comfy sofas, lovely woodwork and lots of green plants. The whole place is bursting with positive energy.

This is a place where you would want to go with your friends for a happy evening or dinner with your family. And yes this place welcomes children of all ages. I finally made it to Kanteen after hearing good reviews from friends and I’m happy to report that I wasn’t disappointed.

Kanteen’s menu is pretty elaborate and is dominated by a desi palette – you’ll find butter chicken, mutton karahi, palak paneer etc on the menu. The best part is that it is not very heavy on the pocket. The cafe is run by Meher, who started off as a home-based party planner. She did my bridal shower almost 5 years back and had impressed me with her services back then also.

We started off with some crunchy Meethi Puri and Paani Puri and thoroughly enjoyed it – just what you want on a rainy day. We also tried some desi dynamite prawns which were different but delicious.

Next, we had the mini chapli kebabs on small parathas which were just perfect with just the right amount of spices.

What’s life without a plate of good old daal chawal. Kanteen’s daal chawal was elaborate and was served with fried bhindi, paapar, aalo, qeema kabab, achaar and raita. It was a wholesome dish on its own and one of my personal favourites.

We also tried Kanteen’s tawa chicken and that was also tantalising to the taste buds.

For a sweet ending to a lovely evening, we ordered the Rabri & Jalebi and Caramel Bread Pudding. Both the desserts were delectable and absolutely delicious. One thing I particularly liked was that the sweet was nicely balanced and did not send you into a sugar coma.

Khaadi’s Kanteen lived up it to its expectations and hype and I will definitely be venturing there again soon to treat myself to some delightful desi food.

  • Instagram to remove cosmetic surgery filters

Instagram to remove cosmetic surgery filters

Instagram is removing all filters that represent or promote cosmetic surgery. It believes these filters are harmful to people’s mental health.

These filters include ones that make your lips bigger, contour your face or make your wrinkles or fine lines disappear. The company says the ban is being applied to promote wellbeing.

A spokesperson for Instagram said “We’re re-evaluating our policies—we want our filters to be a positive experience for people. While we’re reevaluating our policies, we will remove all effects from the gallery associated with plastic surgery, stop further approval of new effects like this and remove current effects if they’re reported to us.”

The move comes after an update to the app that allowed users to create their virtual effects that can be superimposed on images and videos. Some popular filters copied the effects of cosmetic surgery.

  • Karachi University student creates edible shopping bags

Karachi University student creates edible shopping bags

A student from Karachi University has made environment-friendly plastic from a marine plant. But that is not even the most exciting thing about it.

What’s interesting about this type of plastic is that it’s edible. You can mix it with water or any other hot fluid and drink it without any harmful effects.

As per reports, the plastic can be
used for making shopping bags. When it comes to its commercial aspects, the
only disadvantage is that it cannot hold high-temperature liquids like tea,
because it dissolves in hot fluids.

However, cold liquids like milk can
be carried in these bags for a short period.

A recent clip that is being circulated on social media shows the host mixing the plastic in the water and then drinking it to show that it does not have any side effects and can solve the pollution problem that the country is facing from excessive use of non-biodegradable plastic.

Halloween parties are a big thing in schools, universities as well as at private events. They are no doubt a lot of fun and the spooky decor and trick or treating make it even more entertaining. However, many people do not know what Halloween is.

For starters, Halloween is celebrated every year on 31st October and this year Halloween falls on Thursday, October 31. The evening before was known as All Hallows Eve, and later Halloween.

According to tradition, the concept of Halloween was introduced by the Celts, a collection of tribes with origins in central Europe. The Celts lived 2,000 years ago and celebrated their new year on November 1.

Celts believed that on the night before the new year, the boundary between the living and the dead became blurred. Hence, on the night of October 31, they celebrated Samhain, when it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth.

How is Halloween relevant to Pakistan?
