PTI to launch movement against alleged rigging in February 8 Polls

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Asad Qaiser said on Tuesday that his party is planning to launch a street movement against the “stealing” of their mandate by their opponents in the February 8 elections.
“We will unite all political forces and will launch a movement within the law and Constitution,” said Qaiser while speaking to media persons in Islamabad on Tuesday.
The PTI leader said that they are planning to take to the streets in all provinces so their demands are met, adding that they will snatch their rights. “Our movement will continue and will bring together all political forces,” he said, adding that they will forge an alliance.

The former National Assembly (NA) speaker stated that they will peacefully protest because they don’t trust the government led by Shehbaz Sharif, which they consider fake.

  • PPP agrees on Dar as finance minister

PPP agrees on Dar as finance minister

The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has agreed to the appointment of Ishaq Dar as the finance minister, as per The News on Monday. Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and PPP are ready to form a coalition government in the centre after the February 8 polls nationwide.

The development comes in the backdrop of PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto’s tirade during election campaign in the run-up to the February 8 polls, wherein he had time and again criticised Dar for mismanaging the economy during the PML-N-led Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) government.

In January, Bilawal Bhutto told Geo News that his party will see  “anyone but Dar” as the country’s finance minister because of the poor economic situation in Pakistan.

The PML-N leader refrained from responding to his comment and said, “He [Bilawal] is like my child. I don’t want to comment on what he said.”

“This is the same Bilawal who on the floor [of the parliament] a few months back used to say that for him I’m Dar uncle,” he added.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s cabinet will be finalised after Imran Khan’s approval

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) cabinet will be finalised after the approval of sentenced founder Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Imran Khan, Geo has reported, quoting newly-elected chief minister Ali Amin Gandapur on Saturday.

“I will meet the PTI founder over [matters pertaining to the formation of the] KP cabinet on Monday (March 4),” Gandapur said.

Geo sources claimed that there are 15 members on the list of prospective cabinet members that will be shown to founder PTI, including the names of Mushtaq Ghani, Khaleeq ur Rehman, and Aqib Ullah Khan.

The development comes days after newly-elected members of the provincial legislature were sworn in by now-former speaker Mushtaq Ghani in a ruckus-hit inaugural assembly session.

A day earlier, Ali Amin Gandapur, after being elected chief minister, demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja in his victory speech in the provincial assembly.

  • Mahmood Khan Achakzai nominated for President by Sunni Ittehad Council after fiery speech

Mahmood Khan Achakzai nominated for President by Sunni Ittehad Council after fiery speech

Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) has put forward the name of Mahmood Khan Achakzai, the leader of Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PKMAP), as their candidate for the upcoming presidential election in Pakistan.

The announcement was made on Saturday by the SIC, endorsing Achakzai to vie for the country’s highest constitutional position against Asif Ali Zardari, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Co-chairman, who is backed by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and other allied parties forming a coalition government.

Achakzai, who secured a National Assembly seat from Balochistan’s NA-266 constituency, received backing not only from his party but also from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder, Imran Khan. Despite Khan’s current incarceration in Rawalpindi’s Adiala jail, he urged his party members to support Achakzai’s candidacy.

In 2014, Khan had made fun of Achakzai in a public rally during his dharna, mimicking the Baloch leader’s shawl with a duppata.

Confirming the nomination, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Khan affirmed their support for Achakzai in the presidential poll. This move comes following PTI’s efforts to gather political support against alleged electoral irregularities, with a recent meeting between PTI representatives and Achakzai, along with Balochistan National Party (Mengal) chief Akhtar Mengal.

During the meeting, Achakzai expressed his party’s commitment to support any political entity advocating for constitutional supremacy and parliamentary empowerment.

The presidential election, scheduled for March 9, is set to follow a stringent timeline outlined by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). The deadline for the submission of nomination papers is today, with scrutiny scheduled to be completed by March 4. Candidates have until March 5 to withdraw their nominations, following which the final list of candidates will be published on March 6, preceding the polling.

The current President, Dr. Arif Alvi, completed his five-year term on September 8, 2023, making him the fourth democratically elected president to do so. However, due to the absence of the required electoral college, he continues to hold office until his successor is elected.

According to constitutional provisions, the president is elected by members of the National Assembly, Senate, and the four provincial assemblies. The oath-taking ceremony for the newly elected president will be administered by Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa following the election process.

During his fiery speech yesterday in parliament, Achakzai asked the speaker to have four resolutions passed from the house including, “This parliament announces that there will be no role of Establishment and intelligence institutions in the politics of Pakistan. This parliament will be the representative of internal and external affairs of Pakistani politics. No General will come in between.”

He accused certain individuals of attempting to turn the parliament, representing 220 million people, into a marketplace. He emphasized the importance of upholding the Constitution and resisting any efforts by the establishment to manipulate it and further stated that just as Nawaz Sharif advocated for respecting the vote, Imran Khan has also risen to power through the people’s support.

The PKMAP leader raised concerns about attacks on the parliament, stating that the recent attempt was futile as the people had thwarted it. He called for accountability for those seeking to undermine the democratic process.

The presidential candidate for SIC also criticized the military and intelligence agencies’ involvement in politics, stating that they must refrain from such interference and focus on their designated roles.

In his impassioned speech, Achakzai underscored the importance of honoring judges who did not support martial law by recognizing them as heroes, while suggesting that those who did support such measures should have their salaries revoked.

  • Ali Amin Gandapur elected KP chief minister

Ali Amin Gandapur elected KP chief minister

Ali Amin Gandapur, leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), contested as an independent candidate in the recent elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He won the vote to become the new chief minister of the province on Friday afternoon, after the voting finished in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Assembly.

PTI founder Imran Khan has nominated Ali Amin Gandapur as the party’s candidate for KP Chief Minister. There is a high chance of his winning based on the number of PTI-backed members in the provincial assembly.

The former federal minister decided to contest the top provincial post in an independent capacity after refusing to join the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) — the party which was joined by PTI-backed independent winners to claim their seats.

Gandapur was the former federal minister of Kashmir affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan during the PTI government in the centre from October 2018 to April 2022.

Previously, he was a member of the KP Assembly from 2013 to 2018 and served as provincial minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa for revenue.

Global tech chief executives, industry titans, Bollywood stars, pop icons and politicians are expected to jet in on March 1 for the main three-day celebrations hosted by billionaire tycoon Mukesh Ambani, who is building a sprawling Hindu temple complex for the event.

Mr Ambani, 66, chairman of oil-to-telecoms giant Reliance Industries, is Asia’s richest person according to the Forbes real-time billionaires list, worth more than US$114 billion (S$153.28 billion).

On Feb 28 evening, Mr Ambani and wife Nita – along with their son Anant and his fiancee Radhika Merchant – launched a three-day feast for villagers at the Reliance Township in his home town of Jamnagar, in India’s western state of Gujarat.

Mr Anant, 28, who also serves as a director on the boards of several Reliance-owned firms, is expected to marry Ms Merchant, 29, the daughter of an industrialist, later in 2024.

Mr Ambani held the most expensive wedding in India for his daughter in 2018, which reportedly cost US$100 million and saw US pop megastar Beyonce perform.

This time, R&B star Rihanna, illusionist David Blaine and Bollywood’s Diljit Dosanjh will perform for the guests, who are expected to include Microsoft founder Bill Gates, Meta head Mark Zuckerberg, and several current and former political leaders, according to a list released by Reliance.

Also among the invitees is Disney chief Robert Iger, following a deal agreed on Feb 28 between Reliance Industries and Walt Disney to merge their Indian media businesses.

The merger will create a US$8.5 billion entertainment giant in the world’s most populous nation and fifth-largest economy.

Other guests invited include Ms Ivanka Trump, former US president Donald Trump’s daughter, as well as former Swedish prime minister Carl Bildt, former Canadian prime minister Stephen Harper and the King of Bhutan.

Bollywood stars Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan, cricket icons Sachin Tendulkar and M.S. Dhoni, and industry titan Gautam Adani are also invited in a who’s-who of India’s super-rich elite.

The Ambanis are building a Hindu temple complex in Jamnagar, to keep “India’s rich cultural and spiritual identity at the heart of the wedding festivities”, the Reliance Foundation said on social media.

The main celebrations, running from March 1-3, will have different themes, events and dress codes – including a “jungle fever” day with a visit to an animal rescue centre run by Mr Ambani, the Hindustan Times newspaper reported. AFP

Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), joined by independent candidates from PTI, began chanting slogans during the inaugural ceremony.

Newly-elected MNAs to take oath today

Newly-elected Members of National Assembly (MNA) are set to take oaths today in the inaugural session of the 16th session of the lower house.
The development comes as the convening of the assembly’s session, required to be held on the 21st day after the polls under Article 91(2) of the Constitution, was surrounded by uncertainty after President Arif Alvi had stressed the allocation of reserved seats before the session.

Geo News reported that the president gave a verbal response on the matter, without either rejecting or accepting the summary.

On Monday, since Alvi was hesitant to call for the assembly session, the National Assembly Secretariat organized the session.
However, the president finally summoned the NA session after political parties warned him of legal consequences.

ECP rejects Nawaz Sharif’s application for recounting in NA-15

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has rejected an application filed by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif for the recounting of votes in the National Assembly constituency of NA-15, Mansehra.

“The petitioner may approach the Election Tribunal,” the verdict said.

ECP ordered the returning officer to submit the complete results in three days.

Nawaz Sharif’s lawyer said that the elections were unconstitutional, illegal, and against the election rules.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-supported candidate Shahzada Gustasap Khan won the election in NA-15 by getting 105,249 votes.

The PML-N supremo was in second position with 80,382 votes in the same constituency.

President Alvi made the right decision not to call assembly session: Imran Khan

Imran Khan, the founder chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and former Prime Minister, has endorsed President Arif Alvi’s choice to abstain from calling the session of the National Assembly.

Imran conveyed these sentiments during an informal exchange with journalists at Adiala Jail on Tuesday.

First and foremost, he said, he had personally dictated the letter addressed to the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

He clarified that, following the drafting of the letter, there have been no meetings with other party leaders.

However, he said that after consultations with the party’s leadership, the letter would be dispatched to the IMF today (Tuesday). In his discussion on the prevailing political climate, Imran Khan reiterated his call for the resignation of the chief election commissioner, citing concerns over impartiality during elections.

He accused the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) of engaging in rigging even after the conclusion of elections, stressing the imperative of fair and transparent electoral processes.

Commenting on the recent developments, the former prime minister lauded the decision of President Arif Alvi to refrain from convening a meeting of the National Assembly. He reiterated concerns about the allocation of specific seats despite the PTI’s electoral victories, alleging efforts to undermine the party’s success.

“Every attempt was made during the elections to eliminate the PTI,” he alleged.

“We are gathering all the parties that have been made to lose through rigging. and will hold country-wide protests against rigging,” Imran announced.

Amidst ongoing challenges and political tensions, the founder of PTI remains steadfast in advocating for fair governance and democratic principles, vowing to address electoral irregularities and promote accountability across all levels of government.
