Bollywood filmmakers rush to register films on the Kashmir issue

Following the Indian government’s decision to revoke Article 370 which granted Jammu and Kashmir a special status, Bollywood filmmakers have rushed to register film titles such as Article 370, Article 35A, Kashmir Hamara Hai and Dhara 370, among others.

According to a report in the Mumbai Mirror, over 50 titles related to the move have been registered at various Hindi film bodies. A source close to the development shared, “Taking a cue from the success of (Anubhav Sinha’s recently released Ayushmann Khurrana-starrer) Article 15, filmmakers have rushed to register films relating to the Kashmir incident with the titles Article 370 and Article 35A being their first choice.” He added that the associations have received at least 25-30 applications for them.

Previously, after the Indian Air Force’s strikes at Balakot in February, Bollywood producers had rushed to film bodies to book names such as Pulwama: The Deadly Attack, Surgical Strike 2.0, Balakot and Pulwama Attacks, among others.

Trade analyst Atul Mohan noted that filmmakers had rushed to register titles around such subjects because they “pique the audience’s curiosity.”

Like in the case of the Vicky Kaushal-starrer Uri: The Surgical Strike which was a huge hit.

Meanwhile, Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Information and Broadcasting Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan has reiterated that no Indian movie will be screened in Pakistani cinemas. Talking to media outside Parliament House on Thursday, Awan said a policy was being formulated to ban all kinds of Indian cultural content in Pakistan.

Pakistanis can’t help but celebrate India’s loss and New Zealand’s win

India lost to New Zealand last night which means they are officially out of the race for the Cricket World Cup. Needless to say, Pakistan couldn’t help but celebrate India’s loss, especially considering them losing to England lessened our chances of reaching the semi-finals. And what better way to celebrate our arch-rival’s loss than with memes. Pakistani social media was lit last night and here’s proof. As ESPN on Pakistan had written, “No matter what you believe, there is nothing they can’t do. The memes keep them in any game.”

As expected, the newly engaged were also brought into the memes.

    Anushka was also not spared.

Apart from the memes, Pakistani celebrities and politicians also took to Twitter to express their joy at New Zealand’s win.

  • The plight of the brown bear in Islamabad Zoo

The plight of the brown bear in Islamabad Zoo

Islamabad’s Marghazar Zoo has time and time again landed itself in hot waters over the inadequate treatment given to the animals who reside there. In the last few years, the zoo has seen the demise of over 20 animals and animal rights activists have often criticised the government for its lack of attention towards the zoo.

The zoo has recently come under fire again because of a Himalayan brown bear who is in a sorry condition and has multiple injuries. The source of her injuries are not known but zoo authorities say Soozi got her face and right leg injured during mating, which is apparently a common phenomenon. Zoo authorities claim that the bear is being treated for injuries and that the wounds have almost healed up but pictures and videos on social media paint a different picture.

As per social media, the matter first came to light when PAWS Pakistan posted a video of the Himalayan brown bear limping and nursing an open wound.

    https://twitter.com/pawspakistan/status/1138532356598509568

Soozi is being kept in a small cage, which barely fits her, restricting her movement. The zoo director said that keeping the injured animal in a small cage was “necessary for her proper treatment” and that the veterinary doctor recommended it.

    https://twitter.com/wildpakistan/status/1142079219033354240

Even then, the enclosure where Soozi and her partner, Balu, are kept is not suitable for such animals. In fact, most of the enclosures in the zoo are inadequate and reportedly do not meet the standard operating procedure (SOP). The lion’s enclosure is also too small as is that of Kavaan, the lone elephant.

According to media reports, the government is considering transferring the administration of the facility to the Ministry of Climate Change. A few months ago, Minister for Climate Change Zartaj Gul had requested the government to hand over the zoo’s administration to them. Meanwhile, a case regarding the conditions of the Islamabad zoo is currently ongoing in the Islamabad High Court.

Mayor Sheikh Anser Aziz stated that maximum facilities were being provided in the given funds and that the government has not allocated any funds to the zoo. In fact, the PTI government has even dropped a project by the PML-N government worth Rs200 million for strengthening and upgrading the zoo.

  • Of Tamgha-e-Imtiaz and Katrina Kaif: Mehwish Hayat’s new song sparks outrage

Of Tamgha-e-Imtiaz and Katrina Kaif: Mehwish Hayat’s new song sparks outrage

Saqib Malik’s upcoming film Baaji already had a star-studded cast with the likes of Meera Jee and Osman Khalid Butt, but its glamour quotient increased by several folds after its makers dropped a new song featuring none other than dancing queen Mehwish Hayat.

The song titled Gangster Guriya has Mehwish channel her inner rebel and show off her moves in a couple of glamourous outfits. The vocals of the song have been done by Bollywood singer Sunidhi Chauhan while Osman is the man behind the lyrics and choreography.

In its essence, Gangster Guriya is an item number and that is pretty much enough to flare up Pakistanis, especially given the recent debate around the inclusion of such songs in films. In fact, very recently, Hamza Ali Abbasi, on a talent show schooled a young girl for dancing to an item song. Interestingly, the girl’s performance was on Mehwish’s item song, Billi from Na Maloon Afraad.

Following the release of the song, Pakistanis are calling for Mehwish’s Tamgha-e-Imtiaz to be cancelled.

In case you are blissfully unaware, Mehwish’s Tamgha has been embroiled in controversy ever since it was announced that she will be receiving one earlier this year. However, Mehwish slammed all trolls and critics who said she didn’t deserve it. But Pakistanis don’t leave a chance to drag it in at every opportunity.

Here are some of the censored comments from social media:

    https://twitter.com/toxicbaig/status/1141582223239536641

Someone even appealed to PM Imran Khan to take notice.

Even the disappointed cricket fan wasn’t spared.

Several others pointed out that Mehwish’s avatar in the song bears a striking resemblance to Katrina Kaif’s from Husn-e-Parcham, Zero.

However, there were others who liked Mehwish’s new avatar and song.
