    Former actress Noor Bukhari shared a message on social media on the occasion of Independence Day and landed in trouble.

    It’s almost impossible for a festival or an important event to happen in Pakistan without Pakistanis making memes about it.

    Given the current political and economic situation of the country, even on Independence Day, memers kept the meme game going, often poking fun at themselves and their circumstances.

    Noor Bukhari, however, isn’t amused by this, and she took the meme-makers to task.

    The former actress, who left the entertainment industry for religious reasons, shared an Instagram story yesterday.

    Expressing her anger in the story, she wrote that since morning, she had seen many videos where people were making fun of Pakistan. “This country is our mother; it’s not something to laugh about, it’s something to mourn.”

    In her video, Noor Bukhari sent a message to the memers, saying, “Value this country, or this blessing will be taken away. If it weren’t for this country, you wouldn’t exist either.”

    Aerial firing to celebrate Independence Day has injured 70 people in Karachi.

    The injured persons were taken to hospitals from different areas of Karachi, including Korangi, Gulshan e Iqbal, Mauripur, PIB colony, Jamshed Quarter, Lyari, and Malir, rescue sources told Geo News.
    Firing was also reported in Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Nazimabad, Sharifabad, Pak Colony, and Akhtar Colony.

    Women and children were also injured, however , no loss of life has been reported till now.

    In Pakistan, it is a common practice to come out on the roads in groups to celebrate sports wins, new years, and of course, Independence Day. It is also often customary to celebrate these feats by firing guns into the air and lighting up firecrackers. 

    But flirting with danger has its consequences that many innocent people fall victim to every year.

    Ten years back, in 2013, aerial firing resulted in the death of at least one person and more than 30 were wounded in Karachi. Jinnah Hospital alone received 33 wounded people, one of whom died shortly after. 

    In 2018, three people were killed and more than 35 were injured including children and women. Apart from aerial firing, a 22-year-old man was struck by firecrackers in Nazimabad.

    In 2022, one man died while 23 were wounded in Karachi.

    This year, as the public celebrated the 76th year of Independence, two people were killed and 85 were injured as a result of aerial firing carried out in Karachi.

    According to Jamshed Quarters Station House Officer (SHO) Gul Baig, a 25-year-old woman was crossing the People’s Chowrangi on a motorbike with her family when a stray bullet hit her. Simultaneously, a seven-month-old baby was also hit at People’s Square.

    Baghdadi SHO Ghulam Yasin said that a man sleeping on the roof of his house in Lyari’s Aath Chowk passed away as a random bullet hit him.

    A police surgeon, Dr Summaiya Syed has claimed that Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) and Abbasi Shaheed Hospital received 32 injured people each. These cases include a critical case of a head injury, children, teenagers, and women.

    What Does the Law Say?

    As per statements issued by City police and Central district police, eight people in total have been arrested in Kalakot, Kharadar, and Liaquatabad Bridge whereas seven pistols have been seized. The culprits have been charged with attempted murder, possessing illegal weapons and aerial firing.

    Under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), the district administration can issue a ban on an activity “for a specific period of time”. Such a ban is often enforced by the police and any violation of the ban can be tried under section 188 of the Pakistan Penal Code which carries “a maximum penalty of six months in prison or fine or both”.

    Similarly, cases of aerial firing can be registered under Section 337 (H) (II) of the Pakistan Penal Code for a negligent act of endangering lives. 

    337-H. (2) states: 

    Whoever does any act so rashly or negligently as to endanger human life or the

    personal safety of other, shall be punished with imprisonment of either-description for a

    term which may extend to three months, or with fine, or with both.

    Former Prime Minister Imran Khan has congratulated the nation on Independence Day in a prerecorded video, filmed before his arrest on August 5. He has also gave a message to Pakistan’s youth that they need to struggle hard to achieve success, adding that there is no need to go abroad to earn money.  Iman Khan has also said that Pakistan was Allama Iqbal’s dream, and as a nation, we need to struggle hard for its success.

    On the other hand, the outgoing Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed his best wishes to the nation on Independence Day.

    He also paid tributes to Quaid-e-Azam in a tweet posted on Monday:

    “On the 76th anniversary of Pakistan’s independence, I join the nation in paying rich tributes to the Quaid-i-Azam, and hundreds of thousands of unsung heroes of the freedom movement for their selflessness, sacrifices, and devotion to the cause of Pakistan. The Quaid’s statesmanship was a critical factor in shaping Pakistan’s story”.

    The vice president of Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N), Maryam Nawaz Sharif, wrote “Pakistan Zindabad” in her tweet.

    Interim Chief Minister of Punjab, Mohsin Naqvi, has said in his tweet, “Happy Independence Day. Honoured to join the 14th August function alongside Cabinet members, Judiciary, Army, Administration, and Police officers”. Senator Sherry Rehman has also said in her tweet “Happy Independence Day to all my fellow Pakistanis”.

    On the other hand, former finance minister Ishaq Dar also wrote in his tweet “Happy Independent Day”.

    On the occasion of the 76th Independence Day, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has extended a generous gesture to its passengers by announcing a significant discount.

    According to ARY News, the national carrier has declared a 14 per cent price reduction on all domestic flights, bringing forth a unique opportunity for citizens to travel within the country at a more affordable cost.

    In an official statement released on Thursday via their Twitter handle, the PIA spokesperson elaborated on the offer, stating that travellers would be able to avail themselves of this limited-time promotion on August 14.

    Pakistan to spend Rs40 crore to display 500-foot flag in Lahore

    Pakistan has an ambitious plan to raise a 500-foot flag in Lahore, with the goal of claiming the title of the country’s tallest flag. The project, which comes with a significant cost of Rs40 crore, will be showcased during a grand flag-raising ceremony on Pakistan’s Independence Day, August 14, 2023.

    This endeavor is part of an ongoing competition between Pakistan and India to erect the tallest flag. The rivalry began in 2017 when India proudly hoisted a 360-foot flag at the Attari-Wagah border in March of that year. In response, Pakistan swiftly raised a 400-foot flag at the same border on its Independence Day in August 2017. India then surpassed this height by unveiling a 418-foot flag at the Indo-Pak border in Amritsar later that October. Now, Pakistan seeks to take the lead by installing a 500-foot flag in Lahore.

    Opinions on social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook regarding this competition are varied. Some view it as a patriotic display of national pride, while others criticise it as a misuse of taxpayer money and valuable resources. Concerns have also been raised about potential environmental and security implications associated with such colossal flags, as they could pose threats to birds and aircraft.

    According to reports, the remarkable project is being funded by the Punjab government. The flag itself will be made of polyester fabric, weighing a staggering 800 kg. The flagpole, constructed with steel and concrete, will have a base diameter of 12 feet, tapering to 4 feet at the top. Equipped with LED lights and a sound system, the flag will be visible from a distance of 15 km.

    The flag-raising ceremony is scheduled for August 14, 2023, marking the 76th anniversary of Pakistan’s independence.

    The commemorative banknote of Rs75 is available for the general public from September 30 (today), which was released by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) on August 14th to mark Pakistan’s 75th Independence Day.

    At a ceremony held at the SBP offices in Karachi on August 14, 2022, the design of this commemorative banknote was presented.

    The SBP announced in a statement that starting on September 30, the general public can get the commemorative Rs75 banknote from SBP BSC offices and commercial banks’ branches.

    As a result, the Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Allama Sir Muhammad Iqbal, Mohtarma Fatima Jinnah, and Sir Syed Ahmed Khan are shown on the banknote’s obverse, according to the statement.

    According to SBP, the reverse of the banknote emphasises the nation’s commitment to combating climate change and its effects on Pakistan. This issue has become even more urgent in light of the unprecedented loss brought on by the recent torrential rains and flooding that affected large portions of Pakistan, according to SBP.

    The portraits of the national animals Markhor and Deodar on the reverse also draw attention to the threat of extinction and the necessity of protecting these species.
