  • Who is AR Rahman’s favourite director to work with?

Who is AR Rahman’s favourite director to work with?

Bollywood maestro AR Rahman has composed music for nearly all of the major league directors in Bollywood. But which director is the composer’s favourite?

Rahman recently talked about director Imtiaz Ali and his new movie, Amar Singh Chamkila. He told News18 that Amar Singh Chamkila is “a very naughty” film.

“I love working with Imtiaz. He is very friendly. You know, with certain people, work is easy and there’s no pressure.
With him, there’s never been pressure at all. I always wanted to do Punjabi music. I love the power in the language in music. So this was a great chance.”

Speaking about the film, he said, “It is a very naughty picture, we had to find the place for music. If you look at it, Chamika is a composer, lyricist and singer.

The question I asked was, ‘Why am I needed?’ [Then] I said, oh! We can do this part, we can make it like a musical where everybody sings about Chamkila blaming him for the good or the bad. That’s the director’s point of view and that was exciting.”

The movie tells the real story of Amar Singh Chamkila, a famous singer in Punjab. He came from a poor background but became very popular in the ’80s, making a lot of people angry along the way. He was killed when he was only 27-years-old.

‘Amar Singh Chamkila’ will be available for streaming on Netflix India starting April 12. The movie features Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra.
“Chamkila was the biggest star in the 1980s, which was a really tough time for Punjab.
Punjab has faced many difficult times, and this was one of the toughest.

We’re talking about one artist who was killed… I’ve only shown his life, but it represents the lives of many other artists in Punjab and around the world, who face the challenge of being famous and targeted at the same time,” Imtiaz Ali told PTI.

  • Do you know what were the top three most polluted countries in 2023?

Do you know what were the top three most polluted countries in 2023?

IQAir, a Swiss air monitoring organisation, published its World Air Quality Report on Tuesday revealing troubling details of the world’s most polluted countries, territories, and regions in 2023.

“IQAir’s annual report illustrates the international nature and inequitable consequences of the enduring air pollution crisis. Local, national, and international effort is urgently needed to monitor air quality in under-resourced places, manage the causes of transboundary haze, and cut our reliance on combustion as an energy source,” states Aidan Farrow, Sr. Air Quality Scientist, Greenpeace International.

“In 2023, air pollution remained a global health catastrophe. IQAir’s global data set provides an important reminder of the resulting injustices and the need to implement the many solutions that exist to this problem.”

The report revealed that Pakistan, alongside Bangladesh and India, remained among the top three countries with the highest levels of air pollution, particularly concerning particulate matter, in 2023.

The concentrations of PM2.5, harmful airborne particles detrimental to respiratory health, surpassed recommended levels by a staggering margin, as indicated by the World Health Organization (WHO).

In Bangladesh, the average concentration of PM2.5 reached 79.9 micrograms per cubic meter, while in Pakistan, it stood at 73.7 micrograms per cubic meter. These figures starkly contrast with the WHO’s guideline of no more than 5 micrograms per cubic meter.

“Because of the climate conditions and the geography (in South Asia), you get this streak of PM2.5 concentrations that just skyrocket because the pollution has nowhere to go,” said Christi Chester Schroeder, air quality science manager at IQAir.

“On top of that are factors such as agricultural practices, industry and population density,” she added. “Unfortunately, it really does look like it will get worse before it gets better.”

In 2022, Bangladesh was ranked fifth for its air quality, with India in the eighth position. Approximately 20% of premature deaths in Bangladesh are attributed to air pollution, with related healthcare costs accounting for a substantial portion of the country’s GDP, according to Md Firoz Khan, an air pollution expert at Dhaka’s North South University.

India also witnessed an escalation in pollution levels in 2023, with PM2.5 levels exceeding the WHO standard by about 11 times. Notably, New Delhi emerged as the worst-performing capital city, recording a PM2.5 level of 92.7 micrograms.

China experienced a 6.3% increase in PM2.5 levels in 2023, marking a departure from five consecutive years of decline. Conversely, only a handful of countries, including Australia, Estonia, Finland, Grenada, Iceland, Mauritius, and New Zealand, met the WHO standards for air quality.

The IQAir report, based on data from over 30,000 monitoring stations across 134 countries and regions, highlighted significant gaps in air quality monitoring, particularly in countries where the health impacts of pollution are most severe.

Christa Hasenkopf, director of the Air Quality Life Index at the University of Chicago’s Energy Policy Institute, said 39pc of countries have no public air quality monitoring.

“Considering the large potential benefits and relatively low cost, it’s stunning that we don’t have an organised global effort to deploy resources to close these data gaps, especially in places where the health burden of air pollution has been largest,” she said.

Rabya Kulsoom: Aurat March seems to be about hating men

Actress Rabya Kulsoom was a guest on the FHM podcast where she discussed the feminist movement Aurat March. She shared that feminist movements in Pakistan, such as Aurat March, aren’t addressing the key issues faced by Pakistani women, straying from the original goal of feminism. “Aurat March isn’t about hating men. It’s about making sure all women have rights. Like your daughter being able to go to school, work, and be independent. But now, Aurat March and our idea of feminism seem to be about hating men. Not taking care of your husband, not helping him find his clothes, or not serving him food – is that really feminism?”

Rabya went on to say that instead of what’s happening now, Aurat March should talk more about things like domestic violence and encourage women to read their nikkahnama. “This is what feminism is about,” she said. “I support Aurat March, but I wonder where it’s heading. Some of the signs I’ve seen online made me feel like I can’t be part of this.”

The actress from ‘Mujhay Pyar Hua Tha’ said it’s lost its way. Instead of promoting equality for everyone, it’s spreading hate against men.
“The ones who really need feminism aren’t getting the support they need,” said the actress. “If a guy sees a sign saying ‘Find your socks yourself,’ he won’t understand what feminism truly means. Instead, he might end up treating his wife badly.”

“Stop using slogans like ‘Pick up your own sock’ or ‘Heat up your own food’ because feminism is much bigger and more complicated than that.

Sania Mirza opens up about her struggles

On International Women’s Day, Indian tennis star Sania Mirza opened up about her struggles in an interview with Rupha Ramani on Firstpost. She talked about her journey, from the highs and lows of her career to life after retiring.

Mirza reflected on retiring from tennis, saying, “I think I’ll lose my mind if I’m not busy, to be very honest. That’s how my life has been and, actually, one of the thoughts I had when I was retiring was like ‘oh my god’ and so many people would ask me, what are you gonna do now, and I had no plan and I was like ‘I actually don’t know.’”

Despite thinking she might slow down after retiring, Mirza found herself keeping busy with different things like the Women’s Premier League and covering the French Open. She’s grateful for living her dream, saying, “There’s a very few handful of people in this world who get to live their dream. And I feel very fortunate that I was able to do that.”

Mirza stressed the importance of loving what you do, not just for the money. “Nobody wakes up in the morning and says, I’m going to start this career. I want to do it so I can make a lot of money. That cannot be the sole goal for anybody.”

She also talked about the challenges of fame and scrutiny, saying, “It’s been very hard. Playing and succeeding or failing or whatever it is at what you do on a personal level is hard enough. When you put a public platform in it, you put media scrutiny in it…there’s so many things that go along with it.”

Mirza discussed growing up in the public eye, saying, “I became Sania Mirza when I was 16… I’ve lived more years as a known person to the world.” She emphasized the importance of being real and embracing imperfections in a world where social media plays a big role.
