World Bank lowers Pakistan’s growth forecast tighter financial conditions

Pakistan’s current-year growth forecast has been significantly reduced by the World Bank due to tighter financial conditions and limited fiscal space. The country’s economy is now expected to grow only 0.4 per cent in the current year, compared to the October 2022 forecast of 2 per cent growth.

This bleaker forecast assumes that an agreement is reached with the International Monetary Fund for bailout funds. Pakistan’s fiscal year runs from July to June, and the country expects its economy to grow 2 per cent in FY23, although the country’s central bank chief has warned that this forecast could face downward pressure.

Pakistan has been in economic turmoil for months, with an acute balance of payments crisis. Talks with the IMF to secure $1.1 billion in funding as part of a $6.5 billion bailout agreed upon in 2019 have not yet yielded fruit. Lower economic output and high prices in Pakistan have led to stampedes and looting at flour distribution centres set up across the country. The World Bank attributed the greater food insecurity for South Asia’s poor to elevated global and domestic food prices.

The World Bank also lowered its 2023 regional growth forecast to 5.6 per cent from 6.1 per cent in October, citing rising interest rates and uncertainty in financial markets as putting downward pressure on the region’s economies. Most countries have raised interest rates at a rapid pace since the war in Ukraine last year led to choking supply chains and stoked inflation globally.

Sri Lanka’s economy is forecast to contract by 4.3 per cent this year, reflecting the lasting impact of the macro debt crisis, with future growth prospects heavily dependent on debt restructuring and structural reforms. In January, President Ranil Wickremesinghe said Sri Lanka’s economy could contract by 3.5 per cent or 4.0 per cent in 2023 after shrinking by 11 per cent last year.

The World Bank also lowered its forecast for India’s economic growth in the current fiscal year to 6.3 per cent from 6.6 per cent, due to the expected negative impact of higher borrowing costs on consumption. The current fiscal year began on April 1.

  • Historian gets mistaken for actor Tom Holland, gets swamped by messages from Bollywood fans

Ever thought getting mistaken for a celebrity would be a life changing adventure? Turns out reality is far more bizarre than fiction.

At the launch of the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Center, or as we call it ‘Ambani Gala’, celebrities from all over the world showed up dressed to the nines and had the time of their life. Present among them were Hollywood model Gigi Hadid, and actors Zendaya and Tom Holland rubbing shoulders with the who’s who of Bollywood.

Holland, renowned for playing Spiderman, only has one social media account on Instagram. However, as photos of the actor posing with Indian celebrities showed up online, Bollywood fans didn’t realise that the Marvel superstar is not on Twitter.

They tagged another Tom Holland in their tweets, a historian from London.

The case of mistaken identity later kickstarted a hilarious sequence of Bollywood fans spamming Holland with pictures of an event he definitely did not attend.

Twitter users found this mistake extremely funny.

I mean who wouldn’t want to be mistaken for a Marvel star?

  • Muhammad Amir gears up to comeback in international cricket

Muhammad Amir gears up to comeback in international cricket

Selectors of the national cricket team have hinted that left-arm fast bowler Muhammad Amir is gearing up to wear the Pakistan cricket team kit once again.

Sources have said that an important official of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) recently met Muhammad Amir’s manager and gave a green signal to the left-arm pacer by advising him to be prepared while gearing up for a comeback.

According to a media report, the selector has warned Amir to just focus on his cricket and avoid giving unnecessary statements in the media, which might create controversy.

The report further added that he will soon be asked to take his retirement back, so he needs to keep practicing and keep himself fit till then.

Amir called time on his international career in 2020 in protest over the treatment he had received from the then-management, led by Misbah ul Haq.

However, after Najam Sethi took charge of PCB, the management committee chairman said in a media interaction that Amir would be considered for selection like other players, if he takes his retirement back.

“Mohammad Amir can play international cricket for Pakistan if he takes his retirement back. I always took a strong stance against match-fixing. I believe no convicted player should be spared, but at the same time, a player should be allowed to resume international cricket once he has completed his years of penalty,” said Sethi.

Muhammad Amir is the key-bowler for Karachi Kings. The bowler’s remarks often land him into controversy.

Despite retiring, Amir continues to play in leagues around the world and recently represented Karachi Kings in Pakistan Super League (PSL).
Recently Pakistan’s former captain wicketkeeper batter Sarfaraz Ahmed praised Amir, stating that he is better than any other left-arm pacer on the team right now.

‘Cringe’: Twitter slams Varun Dhawan’s defence for kissing Gigi Hadid at Ambani event

Events hosted by the Ambanis are among the most anticipated nights in Bollywood. Indian film royalty as well as international stars arrive dressed to the nines to provide a spectacular night filled with entertainment.

However, as much as we plebeians can gape at this show of money, there was a moment that did not sit well with twitter users. A viral clip showed a performance by Bollywood actor Varun Dhawan pulling Hollywood model Gigi Hadid on stage and spinning her around before kissing her cheek.

The performance was planned, as Hadid posted a clip on her Instagram stories, with the caption saying: “Thank you Varun Dhawan for making my Bollywood dream come true.”

But Dhawan drew backlash on social media because of his response to a twitter user and defending his behavior by trolling critics for being ‘woke’.

The reply irked users, leading to many pointing out that even though the dance was planned, kissing Hadid was crossing boundaries.

Twitter users pointed out that this was not the first time Dhawan had crossed boundaries, as they shared old clips of him crossing boundaries with other Bollywood actresses.

You can now get garma garam biryani from vending machines

Biryani is one of the most popular dishes, not just in the subcontinent, but in the world. And now we have another way of accessing it.

The restaurant with the vending machine is located in Chennai’s Somanathapuram, Kolathur.

  • BCCI sources say entire Asia Cup to be shifted to UAE or Qatar

BCCI sources say entire Asia Cup to be shifted to UAE or Qatar

Sources within Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have denied media reports that Pakistan will likely play their World Cup 2023 matches in Bangladesh.

According to media reports, Asian Cricket Council (ACC) has been continuously pressurised by BCCI to shift Asia Cup to a neutral venue, however Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has stuck to its stance that if they are deprived of hosting Asia Cup, then they will boycott the tournament and will not travel to India for World Cup 2023.

PCB has dragged BCCI towards a ‘hybrid model” for the tournament.

Under this proposed model, other teams would play their Asia Cup matches in Pakistan, while the Indian team would play their matches in another country. Now, according to media reports, Pakistan is also considering the possibility of playing their World Cup matches at a neutral location.

However according to sources in BCCI that talked tto Press trust of India (PTI), these are just pressure tactics from PCB, while there is a probability of shifting entire Asia Cup to Qatar or United Arab Emirates.

“We understand that this is a kind of pressure tactic applied by PCB because of the Asia Cup issue. But let me tell you, ultimately, Asia Cup will also be played in UAE or Qatar and probably Pakistan will also have to play its matches in one of these countries,” BCCI source said.

“As far as Pakistan playing its Asia Cup games in Pakistan is concerned, the budget for the tournament is passed by the Asian Cricket Council. If ACC says that it’s not a commercially viable proposition to hold Asia Cup in two countries, how can Pakistan play its games at home? ACC, for all you know, might not pass the budget,” the BCCI source added.

  • No sweet, all sour: India sarr gaya as Pakistan owns Chicken Manchurian

How will World War III break out? If Twitter had its way, then not because if water shortage or land dispute; but because of a plate of chicken manchurian.

You’re probably wondering kya zalzala agaya tha TL pay. So let us breakdown the latest beef between Pakistan and India for you, since Pak Studies ka entire chapter is par anay walay talib-e-ilm ko rata marna parey ga.

So basically the instigator was a Western source, like it always has been: The New York Times. The newspaper published a piece on the famous Chinese dish, Chicken Manchurian, and called it ‘a stalwart of Pakistani cooking’ that is widely served in Chinese restaurants across South Asia. The article never said that the dish was owned and created by Pakistanis.

But dear students, this is where the Twitter feud exploded because Indians flooded the comments underneath the tweet pointing out that the dish was actually Indian, since it was invented by a third generation Chinese chef Nelson Wang, who lived in Calcutta. And Pakistanis retaliated as they do best- with hilarious memes. The dispute over the sweet n sour dish turned into the most hilarious Twitter exchange we have ever witnessed in our lives.

  • US disassociates itself from Zalmay Khalilzad’s statements on Pakistan and Imran Khan

US disassociates itself from Zalmay Khalilzad’s statements on Pakistan and Imran Khan

The United States (US) has come forward to clarify that its former envoy to Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad’s disapproval of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan’s attempted arrest and his view on Pakistan’s political situation doesn’t reflect the country’s foreign policy.

State Department Spokesperson Vedant Patel said Zalmay did not speak for the administration of President Joe Biden as he is a “private citizen”.

On March 14, Zalmay tweeted that Khan shouldn’t be arrested as it will deepen the crisis and called for early elections. He also said that Pakistan “despite great potential, is underperforming and falling far behind its archrival, India.”

After these statements, Pakistan’s Foreign Office advised him to refrain from offering advice on the country’s domestic issues.

Zalmay had served as the special envoy for Afghan reconciliation under both the former US President Trump and current President Joe Biden administrations.

  • Biden offers support to Uighur Muslim minority this Ramzan

Biden offers support to Uighur Muslim minority this Ramzan

With the start of Ramzan, United States (US) President Joe Biden has expressed solidarity with the Uighur minority in China, which his country says is being subjected to genocide by the Chinese communist authorities.

“Together with our partners, the United States stands in solidarity with Muslims who continue to face oppression, including Uighurs in the People’s Republic of China, Rohingya in Burma, and other Muslim communities facing persecution around the world,” Biden said in a statement on Thursday. He did not mention the Muslim community in India.

“During this sacred time of reflection, the United States also reaffirms our support to Muslim communities suffering hardships and devastation,” Biden said, referring to earthquake victims in Turkey and Syria, and flood victims in Pakistan.

According to rights groups, Uighurs are subjected to mass imprisonment in forced labour camps and banned from expressing their cultural norms. Beijing has denied all allegations, stating the ethnic minority is not being repressed and that any security measures in the region are a response to terrorism threats.

  • Rahul Gandhi sentenced to two years in jail for speaking against Modi

Rahul Gandhi sentenced to two years in jail for speaking against Modi

Indian Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has been found guilty of defaming Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi by a court in western India and sentenced to two years in prison on Thursday.

He was given bail and the sentence was suspended for 30 days.

The criminal defamation case was filed against Gandhi by a leader of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) after a speech during the 2019 general election in which he referred to the surname Modi and asked how all thieves had the surname.

However, he said that he had made the comment to highlight corruption and not against any community.

Modi’s government has been widely accused of using the defamation law to target and silence critics. Gandhi faces at least two other defamation cases elsewhere in the country.

It is pertinent to mention that despite wide-spread accusations of promoting hatred against Muslims, with increasing attacks against the community, Modi is the most popular politician in India by a substantial margin.

It is expected that in 2024, Gandhi will stand against Modi for prime ministership.
