Indian soldiers accused of forcing Muslim worshippers to chant ‘Jai Shree Ram’ in occupied Kashmir mosque

Two former chief ministers of India-held Kashmir, Mehbooba Mufti and Omar Abdullah, have called for an investigation into an alleged incident where Indian soldiers reportedly forced Muslim worshippers in a mosque in Pulwama to chant Hindu slogans.

Mufti expressed her concern over the incident and requested a probe into the matter, while Abdullah described the reports as distressing and hoped for a transparent investigation.

According to Indian media, the soldiers arrived in a village in Pulwama and conducted a nighttime drill, keeping the villagers awake until dawn.

At sunrise, they allegedly forced the Muezzin to chant “Jai Shree Ram” slogans and detained several villagers, some of whom were subjected to physical assault.

The incident has drawn attention from senior army officials, who stated that they are assessing the situation and will provide details once they have clarity.

The army has reportedly apologised to the villagers, and an army major involved in the incident has been removed.

‘Imran Khan zindabad’: A retired Indian Army major publicly shows support to IK for criticising establishment

A retired Indian Army Major, Gaurav Arya, has posted a tweet on his account, offering support to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan for his anti-establishment narrative.

Talking to Twitter, Major Gaurav, infamous for being very critical of Pakistan, applauded Khan for speaking against the country’s army, the prime minister, as well as the country’s intelligence agency.

“He calls Pak Army Chief an animal, Pak PM a thief, people of Pakistan slaves (ghulam) and Election Commissioner a traitor. He publicly threatens to expose ISI”, he said. He also expressed his wish to donate to PTI with the hashtag of ImranKhanZindabad.

A few days ago, the PTI chief directly addressed Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) chief Lieutenant General Nadeem Ahmed Anjum.

“DG ISI, listen carefully, the things I know…I am staying silent for my institutions and the country. I don’t want to damage my country,” Khan publicly said during the first day of his party’s ongoing long march.

This is not a first time that someone from across border lauded Khan. Since the former Prime Minister’s outburst against the establishment, an Indian journalist has also said that Imran Khan Khan is her favourite.

ABP News’ journalist Rubika Liyaquat said: “[Imran Khan] has become my dear most as he has his eyes set on exposing ISI’s secrets.”

  • Govt approves 6 per cent hike in defence budget to mitigate impact of inflation

Govt approves 6 per cent hike in defence budget to mitigate impact of inflation

The government boosted the defence budget for the current fiscal year by nearly 6 per cent to more than Rs1.45 trillion on June 4 in order to cater the demands of the military services, along with increase in their salaries.

As per a report from The Express Tribune, the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet okayed an additional Rs80 billion in auxiliary grants, bringing the total approved to Rs182 billion. The Ministry of Defence had requested an additional Rs80 billion for “critical shortfalls” in the defence budget, in addition to budget revisions for expenses on the Jinnah Naval Base, the Naval Base Turbat, and the multi-functional office building in the headquarters.

Miftah Ismail, Federal Minister of Finance, chaired the ECC meeting, which endorsed a Rs80 billion supplementary budget for the armed forces, or the amount of total expenditures incurred. The ministry of finance projected that extra spending in fiscal year 2021-22, which ends on June 30, would be less than Rs80 billion.

The National Assembly approved an Rs1.373 trillion defence budget for the present fiscal year in 2021. Keeping in view the increase in the spending ceiling, the next fiscal year’s defence budget could be greater than the previously estimated figure of more than Rs1.55 trillion.

The Ministry of Defence received Rs153 billion in total, which is 11.8 per cent more in this fiscal year than in the previous year’s revised budget, which is identical to Pakistan’s average inflation rate. Defence spending will amount to 2.2 per cent of GDP, excluding armed forces development expenditures.

The ECC also agreed to impose a 10 per cent regulatory duty on Chinese petrol imports in order to prevent abuse of bilateral free trade agreements. Some oil marketing companies rerouted their imports through China in order to avoid paying 10 per cent customs duty.

For fiscal year (FY) 2021–22, the Pakistan government had decided a defence budget of Rs1.37 trillion (USD8.78 billion). The allocation represented a 6.2 per cent increase over the initial 2020–21 defence budget of Rs1.29 trillion.

The defence budget represented approximately 16 per cent of the government’s total expenditure for 2021–22, and it was announced against the backdrop of Pakistan’s improving economy. Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, the country’s GDP is expected to rise by nearly 4 per cent in 2020–21.

The majority of Pakistan’s defence budget goes to defence services, with a small portion going to defence administration. Employee-related expenses are the largest expenditure in the former appropriation, receiving Rs481.6 billion in 2021–22, a 1 per cent increase year on year.

  • UK asked to probe Indian army chief, home minister over alleged war crimes in occupied Kashmir

UK asked to probe Indian army chief, home minister over alleged war crimes in occupied Kashmir

A London-based law firm has filed an application with the British police seeking the arrest of India’s army chief and a senior Indian government official over their alleged roles in war crimes in Indian-Occupied Kashmir, reports TRT World.

Law firm Stoke White said on Tuesday it submitted extensive evidence to the Metropolitan Police’s War Crimes Unit documenting how Indian troops headed by General Manoj Mukund Naravane and Indian Home Affairs Minister Amit Shah were responsible for the torture, kidnapping, and killing of activists, journalists, and civilians.

The law firm’s report was based on over 2,000 testimonies taken between 2020 and 2021. It also accused eight unnamed senior Indian military officials of direct involvement in war crimes and torture in Occupied Kashmir.

“There is strong reason to believe that Indian authorities are conducting war crimes and other violence against civilians in [Indian-Occupied] Jammu and Kashmir,” the report stated.

Hakan Camuz, director of international law at Stoke White, said he hoped the report would convince the British police to open an investigation and ultimately arrest the officials when they set foot in the United Kingdom (UK). Some of the Indian officials have financial assets and other links to Britain.

“We are asking the UK government to do their duty and investigate and arrest them for what they did based on the evidence we supplied to them. We want them to be held accountable,” Camuz said.

The police application was made on behalf of the family of Zia Mustafa, a jailed rebel fighter whom Camuz said was the victim of an extrajudicial killing by Indian authorities in 2021, and on behalf of human rights campaigner Muhammad Ahsan Untoo, who was allegedly tortured before his arrest last week.

Human rights lawyers have increasingly used the universal jurisdiction principle to seek justice for people who were unable to file criminal complaints in their home countries or with the International Criminal Court, located in The Hague.

Last week, a German court convicted a former Syrian secret police officer of crimes against humanity for overseeing the abuse of thousands of detainees at a jail near Damascus a decade ago.

Camuz said he hoped the request to the British police seeking the arrest of Indian officials will be followed by other legal actions also focusing on Kashmir.

“We are sure this is not going to be the last one, there will probably be many more applications,” he said.

Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat dies in army helicopter crash

Indian Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Bipin Rawat died in a helicopter crash in the southern state of Tamil Nadu on Wednesday, the Indian Air Force (IAF) said.

“With deep regret, it has now been ascertained that Gen Bipin Rawat, Mrs Madhulika Rawat and 11 other persons on board have died in the unfortunate accident,” tweeted the IAF.

Reacting to the news, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter and wrote: “I am deeply anguished by the helicopter crash in Tamil Nadu in which we have lost Gen Bipin Rawat, his wife and other personnel of the Armed Forces. They served India with utmost diligence. My thoughts are with the bereaved families.”

13 out of 14 people died. Gp Capt Varun Singh SC, Directing Staff at DSSC with injuries is currently under treatment at Military Hospital, Wellington.

CDS General Bipin Rawat was the highest-serving official in the Indian armed forces, who was appointed to the newly created post of CDS, a day before he was set to retire as the army chief on December 31, 2019. As part of his new assignment, Gen Rawat was heading the new Department of Military Affairs in the Defence Ministry.

In Dec 2015, the Modi government had appointed Gen Rawat as the army chief by superseding two senior officers.

Earlier today, an Indian Army helicopter with Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Bipin Rawat and other senior Indian defence officials on board crashed in Tamil Nadu’s Coonoor.

“An IAF Mi-17V5 helicopter, with CDS Gen Bipin Rawat on board, met with an accident today near Coonoor, Tamil Nadu,” confirmed the Indian Air Force official Twitter account.

Indian news agency ANI tweeted about the crash, saying that 14 people in total were on board the chopper, including the Indian defence assistant, IAF pilots and security commandos.

  • ‘Pakistan Zindabad’, Shaan calls out ex-Indian army officer for spreading fake news

‘Pakistan Zindabad’, Shaan calls out ex-Indian army officer for spreading fake news

Pakistani actor Shaan Shahid reacted to a viral picture from his movie ‘Yalghaar’ after an ex-Indian army officer tweeted a photo of Pakistani actors, falsely claiming that they were Pakistani soldiers who had been martyred in Panjshir Valley in Afghanistan. Apart from Shaan, others actors in the picture include Umair Jaswal and Bilal Ashraf.

Shaan responded to the tweet by sharing his movie poster and said, “Hello from the other side. Pakistan Zindabaad!”

Umair Jaswal also made fun of the picture. He tweeted, “Hello dear! From Pakistan.”

The confusion started after a former Indian army officer, Maj Gen GD Bakshi, claimed on Twitter that the Pakistan Army had suffered heavy casualties in Panjshir Valley.

A Twitter user mocked Bakshi by sharing a picture from the set of Pakistani movie ‘Yalghaar’ and wrote: “My class fellow from school days Maj Aijaj 2nd from left and Capt Jufar 1st from left embraced martyrdom in Panjshir. They were buried yesterday in Peshawar. ISPR is trying to hide these casualties. They fought bravely and should be honoured as such. This is injustice by Pak Army.”

Following the false claim, an Indian general Lt Gen H S Panag(R) criticised his own general.

Earlier, an Afghan journalist mistook Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) MNA Aamir Liaquat as a martyred soldier in Afghanistan.

Indian news channels, Republic TV, and Zee Hindustan ran visuals from a video game — Arma-3 — stating that it was the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) attacking the anti-Taliban fighters.

Then a Twitter user shared a picture of a fighter jet, claiming that a PAF plane was shot down in Afghanistan’s Panjshir Valley. Later, a fact-check by Dawn showed that the picture is actually from 2018 in the United States.

Bakshi, who has had a long career in the Indian army, is known for spreading fake news. An article by Indian publication The Print last year referred to him as the “shrillest warmonger in the media”, as per Dawn.

  • Naxals group kills 22, wounded 30 Indian security forces personnel in gun battle

As many as 22 Indian police and paramilitary forces personnel were killed and 30 others wounded in a gun battle with Maoist rebels in a central Indian state, police said on Sunday, in the deadliest ambush of its kind in four years, reported AFP.

Some 2,000 security personnel were on the hunt for a Maoist rebel leader in the Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh state on Saturday when they were ambushed.

“So far it is confirmed that 22 security personnel were killed,” Chhattisgarh police’s Additional Director General (ADG) Ashok Juneja said of the almost three-hour battle in the Maoist rebel stronghold.

The injured personnel were admitted to two government-run hospitals in Bijapur and Chhattisgarh’s capital city Raipur.

More than a dozen others remained missing, he said, adding that an unknown number of Maoists were also killed in the encounter.

Juneja said the rebels looted weapons, ammunition, uniforms and shoes from the security forces who were killed.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted that the “sacrifices of the brave martyrs will never be forgotten”, while Home Minister Amit Shah wrote on Twitter that India would “continue our fight against these enemies of peace & progress.”

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel wrote on Facebook on Sunday that Shah had assured him of “all the necessary help” from the national government against the militants.

The toll was the worst for Indian security forces battling the far-left guerillas since 2017 when 25 police commandos were killed in the attack.

Seventeen police from a commando patrol were killed in an attack by more than 300 armed rebels in Chhattisgarh in March last year.

Sixteen commandos were also killed in the western state of Maharashtra in the lead-up to India’s election in 2019, in a bomb attack that was blamed on the Maoists.

The Maoists, also known as Naxals, have waged an armed insurgency against the government for decades.

Leaders of the hardline leftist militant group say they are fighting on behalf of the poorest, who have not benefited from a long economic boom in Asia’s third-largest economy.

Indian pilot dead after helicopter crashes in occupied Kashmir

An Indian pilot was killed while another received critical injuries after an army helicopter crashed in the occupied Kashmir’s Kathua district on Monday, reported Indian media.

Both pilots were rushed to a hospital after the crash that occurred due to a technical error. According to media reports, the chopper was coming from Pathankot when it was forced to make a crash-landing in an army area in the Lakhanpur belt of the district.

Two pilots of the helicopter were injured in the incident, he said, adding that they were rushed to a military base hospital. “Tragic news coming in. We have one pilot fatal casualty,” a defence spokesperson was quoted by the media as saying.

In October 2019 a Dhruv helicopter of the Indian Army carrying the then chief of the force’s Northern Command Lieutenant General Ranbir Singh and other officers had made an emergency landing following a technical glitch in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch, according to a report in Hindustan Times.

The acts of brutality from Sunday were condemned by Pakistan.

In a statement, Foreign Office (FO) spokesperson Zahid Hafeez Chaudhri said that due to the illegal and indiscriminate use of pellets, dozens of Kashmiris were wounded and some had sustained eye injuries causing permanent blindness.

Meanwhile, Indian media tried to defend the violence as journalists, including Gaurav C Sawant, took to Twitter and wrote, “If one breaks the law, one should be ready to face the full force of law enforcement agencies.”
