Why is India hosting the World Cup with empty stadiums?

Social media users are questioning the decision by the ICC to let India host the World Cup when there is no opening ceremony and barely any spectators in the first match.

Interestingly, when the Asia Cup was being partially hosted by Pakistan, some Indians criticized the ‘empty stadium’ in Multan. Now, the tables have turned, India is the host, the first match is between New Zealand and England, finalists of the last World Cup, and the stadium is empty. There was no opening ceremony for ICC World Cup 2023 and honestly, we can’t see spectators either.

This one’s hilarious, to be honest, does this remind you of Asif Zardari too?

Twitter user Ahsan Shehzad said, “A complete empty stadium in Ahmedabad, is India the right place to host the WC??”

  • Indian cricketer Shikhar Dhawan given divorce on grounds of cruelty inflicted by wife

Indian cricketer Shikhar Dhawan given divorce on grounds of cruelty inflicted by wife

On Wednesday, a Delhi court granted Indian cricketer Shikhar Dhawan divorce from his wife Aesha Dhawan, on grounds of cruelty inflicted by his spouse. The couple married in 2012, and share a 10-year-old son.

According to NDTV, the family court judge accepted Mr Dhawan’s accusations of “mental torture’” inflicted by his wife, who was unable to prove the allegations to be false. The petition details multiple instances where Dhawan was exploited, put in mental agony after being refused to visit his son.

The petition said that the wife had promised to move to India to help with Dhawan’s career after he was unable to move to Australia. However, it reveals Aesha backtracked and refused to move back, claiming she would be forced to give up custody of her children.

“He (Dhawan) for no fault of his own had been through immense agony and anguish of living separately from his own son for years. Even though the wife denied the allegation, submitting that though she genuinely wanted to live in India with him, yet she did not choose to contest the claim. The respondent, by conducting herself in the manner, has inflicted such cruelty, agony and trauma on him, that it was impossible for the petitioner to save the marriage,” the statement from court said.

The next example given in the petition recalls how Aesha forced the cricketer to make her to owner of the three properties he bought in Australia, and had complete ownership of one home while joint custody on the other two. She did not provide her own funds to contribute in the purchase, forcing Dhawan to pay child support not only for their son, but also for two daughters from the wife’s first marriage for whom she was already receiving payments from her first husband.

“The respondent was required to prove that properties were purchased out of her fund as well or her name was included out of love and affection. Thus, Dhawan’s allegation that she compelled him to make her owner to some extent in all three properties or that she pocketed sale proceeds thereof has got to be believed as true,” it added.

The court granted mandatory visitation rights to Dhawan to meet his son in India and Australia, and demanded Aesha to bring their child back to the country.

‘No one took any money from us in Pakistan’: Virender Sehwag recalls Pakistan’s hospitality

Former Indian batsman Virender Sehwag praised the hospitality of the people of Pakistan in a recent video.

The ace Indian batter, known for criticising Pakistan cricket, very rarely has something positive to say about the arch-rival country.

However, in a recent interview on an Indian channel, Sehwag recalled the Indian cricket team tour of Pakistan in 2004.

Sehwag disclosed that he bought 30 to 35 Pakistani suits for his family. w
When he tried to pay, the shopkeeper refused to accept any charges.

Sehwag said, “I was wondering why he was not taking any charges, so I asked him what happened. The shopkeeper replied with a sweet and gentle tone, ‘You are our guest, how can I take money from you? Take it as a gift.’

“Aap toh mehmaan ho, aapse paise kaise le sakte hain hum?” Sehwag said.

Wherever the Indian team traveled in Pakistan, this was the constant behavior of the community, their hospitality is amazing, Sehwag said.

“We ate a lot of street food, did a lot of shopping, and no one charged us. The love we received in Pakistan is unforgettable,” he commented, adding that the Indian team felt emotional when they saw the love Pakistani people have for them.
“And then we thought we are just two brothers who are separated from each other.”

Asia Cup in Pakistan or not: Next 48 hours crucial

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Management Committee Chairman Najam Sethi is in Dubai for a crucial meeting with Jay Shah, the President of Asian Cricket Council (ACC) and also secretary for Board of Control for cricket in India (BCCI).

Jay Shah has continuously threatened PCB that the Indian team will not travel to Pakistan for Asia Cup 2023 and force Pakistan to step back from hosting the tournament.

Pakistan has declared its stance loudly and clearly for everyone that if Pakistan is forced to back off from hosting Asia Cup, warning that if anyone tries to take away Pakistan’s rights, the country will boycott Asia Cup and will also not travel to India for the upcoming World Cup.

Najam Sethi also proposed a hybrid model for India, suggesting that they can play their matches at another venue but it’s Pakistan’s right as host to decide where those matches will be played.

Star Sports’ owner is also attending the meeting.

It is clear that no other team will give the kind of revenue an India Vs Pakistan match can produce. Star Sports has a contract with ACC from 2016 to 2023 under which they paid 50 million USD.

Indian Media has reported that BCCI is planning to organized its own five nation Asia Cup in which they will exclude Pakistan but broadcasters are not ready for this.

Earlier Indian media ran fake news that Asia Cup has been shifted to Sri lanka but Sri Lankan media denied Indian media reports.

  • Harbhajan Singh says if Imran Khan is not safe in Pakistan then Indian team shouldn’t travel there

Harbhajan Singh says if Imran Khan is not safe in Pakistan then Indian team shouldn’t travel there

Former Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh has voiced concerns over the Indian team travelling to Pakistan for the upcoming Asia Cup.

Pakistan and India have locked horns over Asia Cup with Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) threatening Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) that they will not travel to the host country for Asia Cup amid security reasons.

BCCI has proposed to Asian Cricket Council (ACC) to select a neutral venue for the tournament but PCB has stuck to its guns, stating that that they will also boycott travelling to India for the upcoming World Cup.

Former off-spinner Harbhajan Singh expressed his views on the matter in a recent interview, where he cited the current political crisis in Pakistan as reason enough for India to not go.

He was of the view that going to play in the neighboring country would not be safe for the Indian team, stating that the relationships between the two countries were not as good now as they were when both teams played a series last time.

He also referred to former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s repeated assertions about threats to his life as proof enough that Pakistan was not safe.

“I think India will not go to Pakistan and play the Asia Cup. Why is the situation not good? Something new is happening every day, even their former Prime Minister Imran Khan is not safe in Pakistan. In such a situation, why would the Indian team go to Pakistan and play in the Asia Cup,” he said.

There is no clarity about the venue of the Asia Cup marquee tournament as yet.
