Punjab Ombudsman buys expensive phones worth Rs. 76 lacs, govt denies any involvement

An official notification of a “sale tax invoice” from the Punjab Ombudsman placing an order of five Samsung Galaxy S24 and seven iPhone Pro Max worth Rs. 76 lacs created a stir on social media. Netizens criticised the government for wasting money, but the government claimed otherwise.

A number of X (formerly Twitter) users criticised the government for spending extravagantly on such accessories. Journalist and academic Ali Moeen Nwazish posted on X: “This is exactly why people don’t pay tax in Pakistan. If you want people to pay tax, show that it is being spent on people like their healthcare and education, and not on land cruisers, iPhones, servants, luxuries and plots for the elite bureaucrats, judges and military officers.”

Another user named Osama Yawar shared the notification with the caption, “Is this how taxpayers money is being wasted by officials who can’t even write an email?”

To put more fuel to the fire, a citizen named Sohaib Qureshi, claiming to be an expert on E-Commerce, shared that the company The Laptop Store, with which the Ombudsman has placed an order, is allegedly non-filer. To prove his claim, Sohaib attached a screenshot from the FBR website where the company has no record of tax to its name. “More than one million is a sales tax but this laptop store is non compliant in sales tax,” Sohaib wrote.

Punjab’s Information Minister Azma Bukhari told The Current that Punjab’s Ombudsman is an autonomous body and does not come under Punjab government, “It’s from an autonomous body, not by Punjab government,” she said.

However, the Punjab Ombudsman was reluctant to respond to our request for confirmation of the viral notification. Even after multiple calls, there was no explicit answer, but an inside source revealed that this is a normal process and it seems authentic as it has the signature of the accounts officer of Punjab’s Ombudsman. The same source elaborated that the Punjab Ombudsman has its own budget and works independently. The phones are not for personal use but for official use only.

An account titled Jmhoori Martial Law asked people to explain the difference between Iphone 15 pro max with 512 GB and Samsaung Galaxy with the same storage. “Other Pakistani brands available in Pakistan, do they have better capability to record videos?” the handle asked.

The Ombudsman office is empowered to entertain complaints against any department commission or office of the Provincial Government or a statutory corporation or other institution established or controlled by the Provincial Government but does not include the High Court and the Courts working under the supervision of High Court and Provincial Assembly and its Secretariat, explains the official website as its primary function.

  • Early buyers report shocking defects in iPhone 15 Pro phones

Early buyers report shocking defects in iPhone 15 Pro phones

According to an insider known as Majin Bu, there have been reports of quality issues with some iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max devices right out of the box. These problems include instances where the titanium frame lacks proper colour application, and in cases where colour is present, it is not evenly distributed.

Furthermore, some of these faulty units exhibit a misalignment of the display, which doesn’t align correctly with the device’s edges.

It’s worth noting that a Foxconn employee had previously indicated that the initial batch of iPhone 15 Pro series phones might encounter issues, and it appears this prediction is coming to fruition.

Majin Bu shared additional images of defects in a subsequent tweet, showcasing display misalignments, camera lens dirt, screen scratches, and various forms of damage, including reports of bubbles and discoloured areas. These problems seem to affect units destined for the US, Chinese, and EU markets.

Another tweet features a message from a premium reseller who observed issues such as uneven gaps on the back glass, unstable OLED screens, phones arriving with long scratches, and bubbles under the glass measuring 5cm by 4cm.

While the primary concerns are centred around the Pro models, some iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus units are also exhibiting defects. Interestingly, the reseller noted that these issues were not prevalent with the iPhone 14 Pro models.

Reddit also contains a few complaints about the iPhone 15 series devices arriving in less-than-ideal condition. One user, in particular, shared their experience with an iPhone 15 Pro Max that arrived with three cracks in the rear panel, mentioning that the phone appeared loose inside the box upon unboxing.

If you happen to receive one of these defective units, it’s advisable to contact Apple promptly and arrange for a replacement. Alternatively, you could opt to wait until Apple and its manufacturing partners have addressed these assembly line issues, although it’s uncertain whether a formal public statement regarding this matter will be made.

Importantly, while these defects are disconcerting, they do not seem to affect the functionality of the affected devices. This means that while waiting for your replacement unit, you can continue to use your new iPhone without significant operational hindrances.

  • Cracked iPhone 15 Pro’s glass? Here’s how much you’ll pay for repairs

Cracked iPhone 15 Pro’s glass? Here’s how much you’ll pay for repairs

The Apple iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max now boast a more repair-friendly internal design, featuring a redesigned frame that facilitates easy removal of the back glass panel from the devices. This modification initially debuted with the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus last year and has now been extended to this year’s Pro models.

At that time, reports indicated that the ability to remove the back glass would likely lead to significantly reduced repair costs for iPhone 15 Pro models with cracked back glass, particularly for customers without AppleCare+ coverage. This information has now been confirmed.

As reported by Ian Zelbo, Apple has updated its US website with the repair fees for iPhone 15 models, revealing that it will charge $169 (PKR 51,000) to $199 (PKR 59,000) to repair an iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max with back glass damage. In comparison, these fees were set at $499 or $549 for the iPhone 14 Pro or iPhone 14 Pro Max.

These lower fees have also been confirmed by 9to5Mac. Customers who have AppleCare+ coverage for their iPhone can have their back glass damaged for just $29 (PKR 8,600).

In the US, Apple’s battery replacement fee remains unchanged at $99 for all four iPhone 15 models, consistent with the pricing for the iPhone 14 series. For additional iPhone 15 repair fees, such as for the rear camera or other types of damage, you can visit Apple’s website.

  • Will iPhone 15 Pro Max in Pakistan surpass the price of a Hyundai SUV in India?

Will iPhone 15 Pro Max in Pakistan surpass the price of a Hyundai SUV in India?

The iPhone 15 Pro Max with 256 GB of storage is initially priced at $1,100 in the United States, which, at the current exchange rate of Rs295, translates to approximately Rs325,000 in Pakistani rupee (PKR).

However, it’s anticipated that the cost will significantly rise in Pakistan due to additional expenses like Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) approval and retailer margins.

Given the precedent set by the iPhone 14 Pro Max, which currently retails for Rs540,000 in Pakistan, we expect the starting price of the iPhone 15 Pro Max to be around Rs555,000 or possibly even higher once local mobile shop owners import and sell them.

Apple iPhones generally have higher price tags in Pakistan due to taxes and PTA approval fees, making it challenging to pinpoint the exact cost.

Nonetheless, it’s reasonable to assume it will exceed Rs500,000, considering that the iPhone 14 Pro Max is already priced above this threshold in Pakistan.

Additionally, a Pakistani website called Phonebolee suggests an expected price of PKR 643,999 for the Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max.

In terms of comparisons to India, a report by DNA India highlights the astonishing prices of iPhones in Pakistan. It notes that the Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max, priced over Rs7.3 lakh in Pakistan, surpasses the cost of a Hyundai Exter 5-seater SUV, which is priced at INR 5.99 lakh in India.

However, it’s important to be cautious about such comparisons, as they might not accurately reflect the actual market dynamics.

Keep in mind that the exact price of the iPhone 15 Pro Max in Pakistan can vary among different retailers.

Additionally, the exchange rate between the Indian rupee and the Pakistani rupee is approximately 1 INR to PKR 3.56. So, when comparing the INR 600,000 price of an SUV, it equates to approximately Rs2,136,800, or Rs2.1 million in Pakistani rupees, which is significantly higher than the expected price of the Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max.

  • Apple is not replacing iPhone 15 Pro Max with iPhone 15 Ultra: Leaks

Apple is not replacing iPhone 15 Pro Max with iPhone 15 Ultra: Leaks

According to a recent report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple’s flagship smartphone for this year is expected to be named the iPhone 15 Pro Max rather than the previously speculated iPhone 15 Ultra. The upcoming iPhone lineup will also comprise the standard iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, and iPhone 15 Pro models.

Gurman had previously hinted at the possibility of Apple using the Ultra branding for its highest-tier iPhone, akin to the Apple Watch Ultra. However, this nomenclature shift is more likely to be reserved for the anticipated iPhone 16 Ultra, featuring a larger 6.9-inch display, slated for next year.

For the time being, it seems that the Pro Max branding will persist for at least another year.

As for the iPhone 15 Pro Max, it is rumoured to introduce several notable enhancements, including an advanced telephoto lens offering up to 6x optical zoom, a substantial upgrade from the 3x limit seen in the iPhone 14 Pro models.

Additionally, the device is expected to feature a titanium frame, a customizable action button, a speedier A17 Bionic chip, slimmer bezels, support for Wi-Fi 6E, and more. Pricing for the iPhone 15 Pro Max is rumoured to begin at $1,199 in the United States, marking a $100 increase compared to its predecessor, the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Apple is scheduled to unveil its iPhone 15 series during the “Wonderlust” event on Tuesday, September 12, commencing at 10 a.m. Pacific Time. Stay tuned for comprehensive coverage of Apple’s announcements, including on-site reporting from the iconic Steve Jobs Theatre.

  • Apple’s next big hit? iPhone 15 Pro Max set to redefine smartphone photography

Apple’s next big hit? iPhone 15 Pro Max set to redefine smartphone photography

The highly anticipated iPhone 15 Pro Max is poised to establish itself as Apple’s flagship smartphone, boasting an innovative periscope lens that promises remarkable optical zoom capabilities, potentially ranging from 5X to 10X. According to insights from esteemed analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, this groundbreaking addition has ignited speculation about the iPhone 15 Pro Max becoming a dominant force in Apple’s product lineup.

Scheduled for unveiling at Apple’s September 12 event, the iPhone 15 series is generating fervent excitement among tech enthusiasts. Notably, the standard iPhone 15 models are poised to receive notable enhancements such as the integration of a USB Type-C port and the introduction of Dynamic Island. In stark contrast, the iPhone 15 Pro Max, also referred to as the iPhone 15 Ultra, could potentially redefine the landscape with its revolutionary features.

In a recent communication by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo via Medium (as reported by 9to5Mac), an intriguing projection has been put forth. Kuo suggests that the iPhone 15 Pro Max might contribute to an impressive 35–40 per cent of Apple’s initial shipments, potentially ascending to the pinnacle of their sales chart. This forecast is substantiated by an anticipated 10 per cent surge in projected shipments for the iPhone 15 Pro compared to its predecessor, the iPhone 14 Pro Max. The focal point of this enhancement lies in the inclusion of the periscope lens, an exclusive offering dedicated solely to the iPhone 15 Pro Max.

The forthcoming periscope lens, seamlessly integrated into the telephoto lens configuration, holds the promise of delivering optical zoom capabilities ranging between 5X and 6X. Remarkably, there is even speculation, as proposed by Apple Insider’s Andrew O’Hara, that these capabilities might push the boundaries to an astonishing 10X zoom, akin to the acclaimed features of the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra. This strategic emphasis on the periscope lens underscores Apple’s unwavering confidence in its allure, a feature that sets the iPhone 15 Pro Max apart, as emphasised in Kuo’s comprehensive analysis.

If this projection materialises into reality, it signifies a compelling willingness among consumers to invest significantly for access to premium iPhone offerings. While the authenticity of these claims remains unverified, there are subtle indications of a potential $200 price increment for the iPhone 15 Pro Max, marking a significant shift and the first such adjustment since the iPhone 11 series. The convergence of cutting-edge technology and consumer demand is positioning the iPhone 15 Pro Max as a formidable contender in the smartphone arena.

  • Major camera upgrade: Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max expected to debut with larger IMX903 sensor

Major camera upgrade: Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max expected to debut with larger IMX903 sensor

Apple has finally upgraded the main camera on its iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max models from a 12 MP to a 48 MP sensor. Reports suggest that Apple will continue this trend with the iPhone 15 Pro models, with the iPhone 15 Pro Max receiving an even bigger sensor.

According to leaker Ice Universe, the iPhone 15 Pro Max is expected to debut later this year with a new 48 MP sensor, the IMX903, which is an improvement on the IMX803 used in the iPhone 14 Pro models. The IMX903 is predicted to be a 1/1.14-inch sensor, which is larger than the 1/1.28-inch IMX803.

Additionally, leakers are promoting hardware-level 14-bit DNG RAW capture. However, it appears that Apple may revert to the days when the Pro Max model had a superior camera to the Pro one.

All available information suggests that the IMX903 will be exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro Max, while the iPhone 15 Pro will retain the IMX803 from its predecessors.

  • Apple may launch iPhone 15 Pro without physical lock and volume buttons

Apple may launch iPhone 15 Pro without physical lock and volume buttons

Ming-Chi Kuo, a renowned analyst and source of Apple-related rumours, predicted that the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max may not include any physical, clickable, conventional buttons when they were first released in October of last year.

And Kuo is back at it again, basically repeating the same facts. His most recent survey of Apple’s supply chain partners indicates that the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max are still expected to go on sale without clickable buttons in the second half of this year.

    https://twitter.com/9to5macPro/status/1613236746451386371

Both phones will instead use solid-state buttons that will be assisted by extra taptic engines to mimic the sense of physical buttons when pressed.

As the only provider of the controller IC for the Taptic Engine’s solid-state buttons, Cirrus Logic is the business that stands to gain the most from Apple’s decision.

If customers like Apple’s fake buttons, according to Kuo, other firms may follow suit and add haptic buttons to their phones.
