‘Tareen is not the kind who can maintain friendships,’ Nazir Chohan quits Tareen group

Punjab MPA Nazir Chohan, a loyalist of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) stalwart Jahangir Khan Tareen (JKT), has quit Tareen’s PTI faction.

Addressing a media briefing in Lahore, alongside Punjab Minister for Prisons Fayyaz ul Hassan Chohan, Nazir said, “Jahangir Tareen used me.”

“Jahangir Tareen is a big name, he only used me to his benefit and later abandoned me,” said Nazir.

Nazir further added, “Tareen should be ashamed of himself, he never inquired about my health while I was in the hospital.” “When he was in difficulty I stood by him. I used to be a part of all his hearings in the ongoing sugar scam against him [JKT],” said Nazir.

Nazir said that he was “never once called” by Tareen in his hour of need, nor did Tareen ask my children about my health.

MPA Nazir Chohan was brought to the Punjab Institute of Cardiology (PIC) after he developed heart problems while he was in FIA custody.

“Tareen is not the kind who can maintain friendships,” added Nazir.

On Tuesday, adviser to the Prime Minister on Interior and Accountability Mirza Shahzad Akbar forgave Punjab MPA Nazir Chohan. PM’s aide had earlier asserted that Chohan ran a “fake campaign” against him, “putting his life, as well as those of his family at risk”.

Nazir was arrested as a consequence of the allegations against Akbar.

‘I should get justice by now’: Jahangir Tareen

Speaking to the media outside a Lahore sessions court, estranged Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) leader Jahangir Tareen on Monday said he wants justice. “Don’t do politics with us, do justice with us,” said Tareen.

Tareen was asked by a reporter if he had any contact with any high-ranking government official in Islamabad.

“I have had no meeting with any senior government official. There was no meeting and this news is wrong and based on a misunderstanding. We are fighting our case in court and waiting for (Senator Barrister) Ali Zafar’s report,” he responded.

Tareen said speculations were doing the rounds that Zafar had provided a “verbal report” to Prime Minister Imran Khan, which he said, was in his favour.

“Imran Khan promised justice will be done. A lot of days have passed, I should get justice by now,” he said.

Tareen said whatever Zafar had said about the cases against him should be made public.

When questioned if the report was against him, would he accept it, the sugar baron answered: “We know some things which I don’t want to tell in the media. When the report comes and whatever happens then I will put everything in front of the media.”

MNA Raja Riaz, a member of the pro-Tareen group, had previously said that Barrister Zafar had completed his probe and given a ‘clean chit’ to the disgruntled PTI leader. However, Senator Ali Zafar later rubbished those claims and said that no report had been submitted by him.

  • No new group being formed within PTI, says Fawad Chaudhry

Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Fawad Chaudhry, while addressing a press conference in Lahore with the members of Jahangir Khan Tareen group, said that no new group is being formed within PTI and the party “is one family”.

“We are all in agreement on fundamental issues. Nauman Langrial and other leaders are second-generation politicians,” and the party should benefit from their experience. “There was just a need to improve communication between us,” he said.

During the presser, the minister said that the JKT group has, “expressed confidence in Prime Minister Imran Khan’s leadership and they are proud of their relationship with the PTI and these are the basic things which we are all united on.”

He continued by saying that everyone in the party is clear on these issues. “Imran Khan is our leader and PTI is our party.”

“The opposition is under the false impression that there are differences within PTI, hopefully, now the opposition’s celebration will end.”

Talking about the ongoing investigation against Jahangir Khan Tareen, Fawad said that “neither Jahangir Tareen is expecting any undue favours from Imran Khan nor the prime minister is the type of a person who will extend any.”

Earlier on May 19, Jahangir Khan Tareen hosted a dinner at his residence and announced a ‘group of like-minded people’. The group appointed PTI’s Raja Riaz as Parliamentary Leader in the National Assembly while PML-N’s Saeed Akbar Nawani will lead in the Punjab Assembly.

‘One SHO is enough for Jahangir Tareen’s group’: Faisal Vawda

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Faisal Vawda downplayed the significance of the leaders who support Jahangir Khan Tareen, saying they can be handled by a station house officer (SHO) alone.

Faisal Vawda criticised Jahangir Tareen on a talk show on ARY News, ‘Off The Record’, saying, “There is no doubt that Jahangir Khan Tareen is an intelligent and successful person. But he is not Imran Khan, for sure.”

The PTI leader said Tareen earned respect thanks to Imran Khan, adding that whatever reputation he had was only because of PM Khan. Giving his own example the leader said he came into power because PM Khan’s name was associated with him. He alone could not have done anything.

Vawda said no one should lose sight of their standing. He asserted, “Imran Khan is the leader and he will remain so and 50 million Jahangir Tareens, 500 million Faisal Vawdas, and 500 million cabinets put together could not create a single Imran Khan.”

On Tuesday night, Jahangir Khan Tareen hosted a dinner at his residence and announced a ‘group of like-minded people’. The newly formed group has appointed PTI’s Raja Riaz as Parliamentary Leader in the National Assembly while PML-N’s Saeed Akbar Nawani will lead in the Punjab Assembly.

  • ‘No place for those who do not trust PM Khan,’ says Qureshi

Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said that Pakistan Tehreek-e- Insaf (PTI) has no place for the ones who do not trust Prime Minister Imran Khan. Qureshi said this on ‘Geo Pakistan’.

He said that all the elected members of the party are committed to Imran Khan’s discipline.

“No elected member could violate the party discipline over the vote of confidence and the finance bill,” he said, further adding that the membership of those who do not adhere to the government’s stance will get affected.

Qureshi said that PM Khan had invited the pro-Tareen group members and heard their concerns. PM assured them that there will be no injustice.

Without taking any names, Qureshi hinted that Jahangir Tareen must show faith in his leader. “Those who no longer have faith in the PM should not stay in the party,” he stated.

Nazir Chauhan, a prominent member of JKT group, criticized PM on ARY News Programme, ’11th hour.’

“So if there is no Imran Khan, there will be no PTI?” Nazir questioned angrily. He further added, “We gave 12 years to the party . Are we mad or are we slaves?”

Chauhan asked, “Is PTI only Imran Khan?”

Shortly after this, #IStandWithImranKhan started trending on Twitter. Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Asad Umar also took to Twitter to show support for PM Khan.

Jahangir Tareen denied reports that he was forming a forward bloc in the party.

Tareen said, “We were part of PTI, and we will continue to remain part of PTI.”

‘We will continue to remain part of PTI,’ says Tareen

Disgruntled Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Jahangir Tareen on Wednesday denied reports that he was forming a forward bloc in the party.

“We were part of the PTI, and we will continue to remain part of the PTI,” Tareen announced outside the banking court where he had appeared for a hearing. He said that the like-minded group was established three months ago.

Tareen said that his supporters had decided to form a separate group after the Punjab government initiated “revenge actions” against them.

Tareen said his ‘supporters’ were standing with him as far as, what he referred to as the “fake” FIR lodged against Tareen. The pro-Tareen group had met the prime minister recently.

  • ‘PTI is Imran Khan’: PTI reacts to Jahangir Tareen’s new political group

On Tuesday night, Jahangir Khan Tareen hosted a dinner at his residence and announced a ‘group of like-minded people’. The newly formed group has appointed PTI’s Raja Riaz as Parliamentary Leader in the National Assembly while PML-N’s Saeed Akbar Nawani will lead in the Punjab Assembly.

PTI’s Nazir Chohan has claimed that the new JKT party has eight members of the National Assembly and 32 members of the Provincial assembly with them. However, the names of the members of the ‘like-minded’ group are yet to be revealed.

He further added that the whole group will resign if any of their members are disqualified.

A few hours after the news broke, Prime Minister Imran Khan’s close aide, Senator Faisal Javed Khan in a tweet wrote, “Imran Khan is PTI and PTI is Imran Khan,” which started speculation on social media that the tweet referred to the official breakup between JKT and PM Khan and the signalling of a new party.

Following the sugar inquiry commission report last year, the friendship between Jahangir Khan Tareen (JKT) and Imran Khan ended with JKT leaving for London and returning with rumours that he was leaving the party.

‘PM had a good meeting with my friends’: Jahangir Tareen

Disgruntled Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Jahangir Tareen on Monday said that lawmakers of the ‘Tareen group’ had a fruitful meeting with Prime Minister Imran Khan. Tareen said his group expressed their concerns and were assured of justice. He said that PM has assured them that he would himself look into the case and justice will be done. Pro-Tareen lawmakers met PM Imran last week.

Tareen also denied being in touch with either the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) or the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP).

The Tareen group will decide on what course of action to take after Eid. Senator Ali Zafar was tasked by the PM to ensure that a fair inquiry is being conducted in Tareen’s case and there is no discrimination. Sources say that Senator Ali Zafar has met FIA and the investigating team as well as Tareen’s lawyers and accountants to hear their side of the story. After Eid, once Zafar completes his inquiry, the JKT group will decide how to move forward.

The PTI leader and his son Ali Tareen were granted an extension in bail from a Lahore banking court in the sugar scandal case. The court ordered the FIA to complete its investigation as soon as possible and submit an inquiry report. Tareen said that the probe against him had been going on for a year and he has provided hundreds of thousands of documents to the court. He said he has never run away from investigation but believes that there is no truth to this case.

Punjab govt rushes to Tareen’s support amid reports of rift with PTI

The Punjab government has said that disgruntled Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Jahangir Tareen is an important pillar of the party and had worked hard to form the government of Chief Minister (CM) Usman Buzdar.

Speaking to Geo News, Special Assistant to Punjab CM Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan said Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan had come to power on the manifesto of the supremacy of law and a corruption-free Pakistan.

Awan, while responding to a question on accountability, said all those PTI leaders and ministers who were accused of corruption had returned to their positions after getting themselves cleared from the charges.

The spokesperson dismissed media reports claiming that the government is taking revengeful action against Tareen.

Tareen is facing charges of corruption in the sugar scandal and multiple cases have been filed against him.

Amid his ordeal, reports had claimed the sugar baron was defecting to rival Pakistan People’s Party (PPP).

While the claims have been rubbished, any truth to the same could serve a severe blow to the ruling PTI, especially in Punjab where Buzdar is in power owing to the support of a number of loyal-to-Tareen MPAs.

The PTI leader, after appearing in court on Wednesday, had said that his loyalty to PM Imran was being tested, but that he is not parting ways with the PTI.

While responding to a question, Awan said that Tareen would never take a step that would harm PTI and that he had played an important role in forming the Buzdar government and taking forward the policies of the PTI government.

“Jahangir Tareen will never want to see PTI getting weak on the political front. In pursuance of PM Khan’s mission he was active as a soldier,” she added.

Meanwhile, the Punjab government has reportedly prepared a list of the PTI members who were in contact with Jahangir Khan Tareen.

CM Buzdar is set to hand over the list to the premier, which would be followed by a final decision on said lawmakers’ fate.

Tareen loyalists maintain that he also played a major role in securing PM Imran the recent vote of confidence and without his support, the government is struggling owing to a thin majority in Punjab.

JKT reacts to reports of joining PPP, seeks ‘insaf from Tehreek-e-Insaf’

Disgruntled Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Jahangir Khan Tareen has said that his loyalty to Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan was being tested, but he is not parting ways with the ruling party.

Speaking to the media after he arrived at a banking court to attend his bail hearing, he was reacting to claims by Shehla Raza of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP).

Raza had a day earlier claimed that Tareen was soon joining the PPP.

“Not one, not two but three FIRs have been registered against me,” he said on Wednesday. “Out of the 80 sugar mill owners, all they could see was Jahangir Tareen,” he said, questioning why he was being subjected to “revenge”.

The PTI leader said his “loyalty was being tested”. He added that an inquiry against him, relating to the sugar crisis, has been going on for the last year.

He lamented that his accounts as well as those belonging to his son, Ali Tareen, had been frozen. “Why have my accounts been frozen? Who is doing this? Who benefits from this?” he asked. Tareen said he was “asking for justice from (PTI) [League of Justice]”, adding that he was a friend, but being “pushed towards enmity”.

In response to a question, Tareen said it was time to expose those involved in a conspiracy against him. He said PM Imran could expose the person who was hell-bent on exacting revenge against him.

Despite his grievances against the ruling party, Tareen said he was not parting ways with the PTI. “I am a member of the PTI and will remain so,” he said.

When a reporter asked Tareen whether he was about to meet former president and PPP leader Asif Ali Zardari, he said the reports were baseless.
