    Actor Mansha Pasha ringed in her 34th Birthday in Karachi and the pictures from the bash have went viral on social media.

    The Laal Kabootar diva’s birthday was made special by her husband Jibran Nasir. Taking to his official Instagram handle he penned down a lovely birthday wish for his wife on her birthday. “Happy Birthday my love. To being young and growing old together. May you have a happy, healthy and successful year.”

    The Mohabbat Tujhe Alvida star also thanked her fans and followers for the “wonderful” birthday wishes.

    Fellow actress Zhalay Sarhadi also attended the event.

    IBA reinstates expelled student who spoke out against alleged harassment on campus

    The Insitute of Business Administration (IBA) reinstated Mohammad Gibrail, a student who was expelled by the university administration a week ago for speaking out against the alleged harassment incident on social media.

    The decision was taken by IBA’s Executive Director (ED) of the institution S Akbar Zaidi after hearing the appeal against the Disciplinary Committee’s decision, which took place on September 29. Zaidi reinstated Gibrail as a student with immediate effect, as per Geo News.

    Jibran Nasir, the lawyer for Gibrail, confirmed that the student had been reinstated. He tweeted, “Congratulations to all students! Gibrail’s admission on appeal to [IBA, ED] has been restored unconditionally,” adding that the ED had also “committed reforms to make IBA safer, give students representation in admin affairs and expeditious and transparent inquiry into the harassment case”.

    During the hearing, Gibrail reaffirmed his respect for the IBA and the Executive Director and reportedly withdrew those parts of his appeal which were unrelated to his expulsion.

    On August 25, Gibrail had reported the alleged sexual harassment incident on a public Facebook post. He stated, “This was actually the incident of workplace harassment that took place in front of my eyes in IBA’s Finance Department where I saw a person whom, I inquired his identity late, named Tanveer yelled at a female employee of IBA in that Finance Department and burst on her.”

    After this, students of IBA started protesting against the administration to take notice of this issue. Despite looking into the matter, IBA’s Disciplinary Committee expelled Gibrail a few days after the incident.

    Khadija Siddiqi, a young lawyer who was stabbed 23 times by Shah Hussain in 2016, questioned the Punjab government for the early release of her attacker.

    Shah Hussain was released from jail on 17 July without completing his five years in jail term. He got a 1.5 year remission.

    “Many people raising questions on the order of the High Court, given by Justice Shan Gul, just to clarify, they approached the court for 1 month of further remission which was NOT granted by the court,” said Khadija in a tweet, adding: “The @GovtofPunjabPK had already granted extraordinary REMISSION of 1.5 years! State to be blamed.”

    “Dear State, will you break the silence and hold jail authorities accountable?” she asked.

    In another tweet, Khadija tagged Punjab Prisons Minister Fayyaz-ul-Hassan Chohan and wrote: “You are responsible for allowing early release of my attacker.”

    Speaking on Geo News programme AAj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Sath’, Khadija said that she has no idea on what basis Shah Hussain got a remission of one and a half years. “It is evident that influence has been used in this case.” She said that when she came to know about the release of Hussain through unofficial sources, she wrote to CCPO Lahore that she needs security because her life is in danger as her attacker will be out but she did not get any response.

    Karachi-based lawyer Jibran Nasir, while talking exclusively to The Current, said that the government needs to explain how and why Shah Hussain has been released without completing his five year sentence.

    Siddiqi was stabbed 23 times on a busy Lahore street while she was picking her six-year-old sister from school on May 3, 2016.

    Mohabbat Tujhe Alvida fame actress Mansha Pasha recently hit back at a troll as he referred to her as ‘cow’ in the comment section of her Eid pictures.

    The Aangan diva replied to the comment in a humorous way.

    She recently made headlines for stating that changing a name after marriage is not required in Islam and hence she didn’t feel the need of doing it post her lavish wedding with Jibran Nasir.

    Recently, a fan made an observation about the Aangan star’s surname and asked under her comment section on Instagram that why she hasn’t changed her surname post marriage. To which the Laal Kabootar actor answered: “Yes, because it is not it’s not required in Islam”.

    On the work front, Mansha will be seen next in Kahay Dil Jidhar co-starring Junaid Khan.

    ‘You asserted yourself as rightful stakeholders,’ Jibran congratulates students after some exams are cancelled by govt

    After the government announced that only elective exams and math papers would be taken by students, Pakistani Civil Rights Activist and Lawyer, Jibran Nasir, thanked the government for its prudent decision and congratulated students on gaining ‘relaxation from their exams’.

    Prior to the government’s announcement, Jibran strongly defended students against the government’s stance of having physical exams on schedule.

    Federal Minister of Education Shafqat Mahmood said that the issue of resolving complaints of non-completion of courses by the students was discussed in a meeting on Wednesday.

    “Several months ago, we reduced the curriculum by 40 per cent to make it easier for teachers and students to prepare,” said the minister.

    But Jibran stated otherwise. Speaking on a morning show on HUM News, ‘Subah Say Agay’, Jibran said, “The primary issue faced by students is that they were previously examined for a nine-month course, when schools used to conduct exams for four months. At present, each student was offered only two months of classes, and students were asked to come to their respective institutions on alternate days.”

    Jibran further said that the government should take a decision that will allow students to get back to their institutions and complete their curriculum. “This debate is not for the private sector students but for the ones studying in public/government institutions, who do not have the facility or access to the internet,” added Jibran.

    Jibran compared the decision-making of the government by comparing the present conditions of the students of Pakistan to India. “With a much bigger student population, India still managed to develop a local alternative to exams like school assessed grades (SAG) and in Pakistan, we can’t even complete syllabus,” tweeted Jibran.

    Jibran took a jibe at the government and tweeted, “Pak Govt: Our students are lazy, they want a free ride, they don’t want to study.”

  • Shafqat’s disappointment

    Last month, Minister for Education Shafqat Mahmood voiced his disappointment at the language used by young students on Twitter and social media. Responding to a question by senior anchorperson Asma Shiraz, Mahmood said: “The kind of language these children are using on Twitter, I think it is a collective failure of the government, teachers and parents. One feels ashamed.” Shafqat Mahmood was being trolled by students online for not postponing their exams. Later, the government did postpone the exams till June 15.

    Lawyer and activist Jibran Nasir, who was leading voices to raise the issue of exams on social media and a vocal critic of Shafqat Mahmood, came to the latter’s defence regarding online abuse. Jibran tweeted: “Dear Students, anyone encouraging you to make nasty comments or insulting tweets to highlight your exam issue doesn’t have your best interest at heart. I’ll repeat don’t hurt your cause or embarrass those supporting you by participating in such trends. Keep it clean & respectful.”

    Unfortunately, online trolling and abuse has become a norm in recent years. Trolls are basically people who attack people online in a vicious and malicious way. There are many studies that observe why trolls behave this way. Dr Mark Griffiths, Professor of Behavioural Addiction at Nottingham Trent University, told the BBC that most people troll others “for either revenge, for attention seeking, for boredom, and for personal amusement”. Then there are paid trolls who are part of political parties and other interest groups. It is their job to silence their critics by attacking them. Politicians, journalists, feminists, activists and many others face vicious online troll attacks in Pakistan and other countries. But this does not make it right. Trolls feel powerful because of the anonymity that social media provides. A lot of trolls do not use their own real names and identities. This makes them feel even more ‘powerful’ and they think they can say anything to anyone, be it celebrities, politicians, journalists, etc. Trolls also think that there are no consequences for such behaviour but this is not completely true either. In some cases, trolls who were identified have lost their jobs, have been expelled from educational institutions and some have even gone to jail for threatening others online.

    Shafqat Mahmood’s disappointment is something that everyone who has faced online trolling can relate to. We hope that young students and other people who think they can say anything and everything to strangers just because it’s an online space will introspect and behave more appropriately, as they would do in an offline space. 

  • Private schools request Cambridge for School Assessed Grades

    With the government announcing that all exams are cancelled until June 15, students are now demanding School Assessed Grades. In this regard, Jibran Nasir who has been a vocal advocate for the student throughout shared a screenshot of an email written to students by the CEO of Cedar College Karachi to inform them that schools in the city are uniting for a joint effort to get School Assessed Grades option for students.

    “In a situation that is evolving rapidly, I am happy to report that in the meeting that we had with school leaders of O’ and A’ Level schools from across Karachi, we reached a unanimous decision to write Cambridge International as one unified block requesting that they give our students the option to op for school/teacher assesses grades for the June 2021 exam series,” read the email.

    The email further stated, “We hope that the fact that we are all speaking with one voice, and have one message will have a greater impact on Cambridge International with respect to allowing Pakistani students the option of taking school assessed grades.”

    “May this become a nationwide effort. Schools are filling shoes of [the] government as Education Minister remains absent,” wrote Jibran in the caption.

    Jibran Nasir also shared names of other private schools who are in favour of School Assesses Grades and requested other schools to do the same.

    Students have been demanding Teacher and School Assessed Grades with the hashtags #ShafqatDestroysOurCareer and #ResignShafqatMahmood trending on social media. They argue that their study schedules have been disrupted because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

    Medical test proves Arzoo Raja is a minor

    A medical test has proven that Arzoo Raja, the teenage Christian girl who was allegedly abducted before being forcefully converted and married to a Muslim man, is around 14 years of age, social activist and lawyer Jibran Nasir announced on Monday.

    According to Jibran, who is part of the legal team fighting the case on behalf of Arzoo’s parents, the Sindh High Court (SHC) has also recognised NADRA (National Database & Registration Authority) documents stating Arzoo’s age to be 13 as true.

    “[The court] declares prima facie [at first sight] she contracted child marriage. Arzoo to remain in shelter home till next hearing,” he tweeted.

    In a subsequent tweet, Jibran added that the court has not disposed off the petition and the next hearing will be held after two weeks.

    “Court is yet to determine whether #Arzoo is sui juris [of one’s own right] to convert religion of free will given her age of 13. At this stage, only question of child marriage has been addressed and resolved,” he said further.

    Earlier, amid public outrage, Sindh government spokesperson Murtaza Wahab had announced Arzoo’s recovery.

    Speaking to Dawn, acting Karachi police chief Additional IG Arif Hanif had confirmed that the 13-year-old girl had been recovered safely and her purported husband had also been arrested.

    The city police chief had said the girl would be sent to a shelter home as per the directions of the SHC while the suspect would be presented before the court.

    “The judge has ordered the girl be recovered by police and relevant agencies and shifted to a shelter home. Next hearing fixed for Thursday morning [November 5]. My lawyer has informed the court that an intervener will be filed on my behalf,” Minister for Human Rights Shireen Mazari had said in a tweet.

    Officials, including Sindh Governor Imran Ismail, have been reiterating resolve of the authorities concerned to resolve Arzoo’s case at the earliest.
