PTI leaders declare president, prime minister ‘illegal’ after first joint parliament session

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Omar Ayub Khan has declared the head of state, Asif Ali Zardari, “illegal” after the President’s first speech in parliament on Thursday.

Zardari stressed the importance of meaningful dialogue between political parties to reduce the political crisis in Pakistan in his speech.

The PTI leader raised questions on Article 41 of the Constitution, which states that a President is a representative of the federation, pointing out that Asif Ali Zardari hasn’t resigned as co-chairman of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) as of yet.

“Law is being violated in this House,” the PTI leader said that he tried to raise a point being a leader of the opposition, but he was denied the floor.

“As per the law, the floor is given to the opposition leader whenever he asks,” he added.

On the other hand, PTI chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan also criticized him, saying that “We do not recognize this president [Zardari]. [Not only this president, but Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the entire cabinet are also illegal.”

Former President Asif Ali Zardari took a jibe at the ruling party and Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan for bulldozing the electoral bills in the joint session. “They [government] are using all their energy to sow the seeds of this legislation, but he [Imran Khan] will not benefit from its fruits; rather someone else will reap the benefits.”

Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) supremo Zardari while speaking to journalists was questioned over the joint session being convened without taking the Opposition into confidence and whether the government succeeded in its plans.

Zardari said the government was getting success due to other reasons. “And you know the other reasons better,” he said.

    PASSAGE OF FATF BILLS:

Earlier, the government on Wednesday managed to pass three crucial FATF-related laws in a joint session of the parliament that was marred by the opposition’s protests.

Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan also attended the joint session which was chaired by National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser. Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif, PPP chief Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, former premier Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and others, including senators Sirajul Haq, Mushtaq Ghani and Raza Rabbani among others were also in attendance.

After walking out in protest, opposition leaders held a joint press conference and criticised the government over the passage of FATF-related bills.

Opposition leader Shehbaz termed today as a “black day in the history of democracy”. He said that the government “crossed red lines” today and added that “until now, the opposition cooperated with the government for the sake of Pakistan”.

The PML-N president also said that the NA speaker had “disappointed everyone”.

PPP chief Bilawal also lashed out at the government, saying that the vote count could have been conducted again but the treasury members were “scared of being exposed”.

“The opposition only has one option remaining and that is [to move] a no-confidence [motion],” said Bilawal.
