    Aamir Khan’s son Junaid Khan makes acting debut in Netflix’s ‘Maharaj’

    Aamir Khan’s son Junaid Khan is making his acting debut in the film ‘Maharaj’, releasing on Netflix on June 14.

    Netflix India. Jaideep Ahlawat posted the film poster with the caption, “The fight for the truth between a powerful man and a fearless journalist. Based on true events from the 1860s – ‘Maharaj’ is releasing on 14 June, only on Netflix!”

    The film ‘Maharaj’ is based on true events. In 1862, India had only three universities and was fighting for independence. A brave journalist and social reformer, Karsandas Mulji, stood up for women’s rights and social change. He was a student at Elphinstone College and worked with a prominent leader, Dadabhai Naoroji. Mulji wrote about important issues like widow remarriages and fought for the oppressed. He was involved in the Maharaj Libel Case, a historic court case that marked a turning point in Indian history.

    Pizza delivery boy allegedly raped in Islamabad

    On Monday, a 20-year-old pizza delivery boy was allegedly raped in Islamabad.

    The boy had gone to the Sharifabad area in the capital to deliver pizza where he was raped by a man. The suspect has been identified as Ahmed Gogi.

    A First Information Report (FIR) has been registered by the police and the ICT Director-General of Police (Operations) Suhail Zafar Chattha has directed the officials to arrest the suspect as soon as possible.

    It is pertinent to mention that this is the second case of sexual violence reported in Islamabad within the last two months. In June, a woman alleged that she was raped by her security guard in her own house.

    Last month, Punjab Home Minister Attaullah Tarar announced that the Punjab government would declare an emergency following an increase in rape and sodomy cases in the province.

    10 children sexually abused in Pakistan every day from Jan to June: report

    More than 10 children were the victims of sexual abuse on average every day between January and June, a report by child protection organisation Sahil says.

    The report titled “Six Months Cruel Numbers 2021”, states that the average number of children subjected to abuse has increased by two children per day in comparison with the last year’s first six months’ report.

    “This year, 81 daily national and regional newspapers were monitored during January-June 2021 to collect data on child sexual abuse, abduction, missing children, and the cases of early forced marriages,” stated the report.

    The data used in the report is collected from all four provinces of Pakistan including Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT), besides Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), and Gilgit Baltistan (GB). The report revealed that a total of 1,896 cases of child abuse were reported in the period.

    Of these, 1,084 cases were of sexual abuse against children, 523 were cases of abduction, 238 cases of missing children, and 51 cases of child marriages.

    The report further states that 53% (1,013) of the victims were girls and (883) 47% were boys.

    It revealed that “children from the age group 6-15 are most vulnerable to abuse”.

    As many as 640 children from 11 to 15 years and 409 children from the age bracket 6-10 were subjected to different types of abuse during the last six months, the report added.

    According to the report, in 1,045 cases, the abusers were acquaintances, while they were strangers in 430 cases, relatives in 49 cases, female accomplices in 47 cases, seminary/school teachers in 38 cases, neighbours in 37 cases, and family members in 32 cases.

    In addition to this, the data showed that 60% of the total cases were reported from Punjab and 6% from the ICT.

    The rest of the cases were reported from other provinces — 26% from Sindh, 5% from KPK, and 3% from Balochistan, and AJK & GB.

    Of the total cases, 58% were reported from rural areas and 42% cases from urban areas.

    Sahil has been working since 1996 on child protection, especially against child sexual abuse (CSA).

    Sahil aims to develop a society and environment where every child should be safe, secure, and protected from abuse, especially from sexual abuse.

  • Did COVID-19 peak in Pakistan in June?

    Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (PM) on Health Dr Zafar Mirza on July 1 said that the number of coronavirus cases was rapidly increasing by mid-June but the country was now in a better position than it was two weeks ago in the continuing battle against COVID-19.

    “The ratio of confirmed infections has gone down from 22% to 15% while the number of suspected cases has also decreased,” the premier’s aide said in an interview, adding that the rate of fatalities was also lower than before.

    Dr Mirza maintained that the government was to now determine over the next couple of days if Pakistan had passed the peak of the COVID-19 outbreak or was still only heading towards it. “If the situation remains stable in the coming days and the number of coronavirus cases continues to decrease, it would be good news for us.”    

    While the number of coronavirus cases in Pakistan is steadily declining amid selective lockdowns across the country and an increase in the number of recovered patients, it is not necessarily due to a decline in the rate of infections and an alleged lower testing rate could be the actual reason.

    However, according to official numbers, in June, a total of 140,726 confirmed cases of coronavirus were reported in Pakistan with at least 2,804 deaths.

    The second week of the said month proved to be the worst in terms of infections as 40,604 were reported. The third week was the most deadly as at least 856 people lost their lives to the virus.

    The last week of June saw 24,324 infections while the number of fatalities stood at 591 — 40 more than those recorded in the first week of the same month.

    It merits a mention that while PM Imran Khan and some members of his team, including senior doctors and other health experts, seem to believe that the virus peaked in Pakistan, especially in Punjab, during the second week of June and the curve has now started to flatten, Pakistan on Friday overtook Italy to become the 11th worst affected country from COVID-19.

    The number of coronavirus cases in Pakistan is likely to rise upwards of 45,000 by the first week of June, suggests the stable trend of rise in infections in the country since its first case of the COVID-19 was reported on February 26.

    The tally reached 1,235 on March 25 (in 30 days), which was followed by an increase of 11,875 in a single month (until April 25) — putting the total number of infections past 12,000 — and later a record spike of 11,416 cases in just 11 days from April 26 to May 7.

    The World Health Organization (WHO) has already warned that the number of COVID-19 cases in Pakistan can rise to 200,000 by mid-July if “effective interventions” are not taken.

    Despite the rising number of cases, countrywide lockdowns have been eased to save the economy while the government is planning to entirely lift the ban on inter-city transportation ahead of Eid holidays.

    The number of confirmed cases of coronavirus in Pakistan stood at 42,227 by the time this report was filed. The number of fatalities was 899 with 11,922 recoveries. Sindh had the most number of infections — nearly 18,000 — with Punjab trailing behind at 14,500 cases of COVID-19.
