K-pop sensation Stray kids celebrates global return at the London festival

Stray Kids, a popular K-pop group, called it a “career highlight” as they headlined the British Summer Time (BST) Hyde Park Festival on Sunday.
The eight-member group from South Korea started in 2018 through a reality show by JYP Entertainment. They have fans all over the world with their unique sound and hit songs like ‘God’s Menu,’ ‘S-Class,’ and ‘Maniac.’

The members, Changbin, Felix, Hyunjin, Lee Know, Han, Seungmin, Bang Chan, and I.N, returned to London after almost five years for their first UK festival performance.

“It’s a huge festival with a big space. We’re excited to see how our energy will change it,” said Han before their one-hour-and-40-minute set in front of thousands of fans.

Time magazine named Stray Kids as one of the Next Generation Leaders. Last year, they were third on the global recording artists list by IFPI, and their album “5-Star” was the second biggest-selling album globally.

In May, all eight members walked the famous MET Gala red carpet in custom Tommy Hilfiger suits. Bang Chan said they are thankful for their streaming success but want to keep making meaningful music for their fans, known as STAYs.

“A lot of STAYs and people are supporting us, so we keep working hard,” said Seungmin.

The group is also preparing for their “comeback” with a new EP called ‘ATE,’ released on July 19. Felix said ‘ATE’ stands for the eight members who have “eaten up” their comeback, and fans can expect new styles and concepts.

“It’s been a while since our last album. With this one, we want to show how genuine we are with music and offer various styles for everyone to enjoy,” said Bang Chan.

“We’re giving our all, and that makes us confident,” added Changbin.

Jin reunites with BTS after completing military service

Jin from BTS has finished required military service in South Korea, leaving the military base in Yeoncheon on Wednesday, June 12.

Wearing his military uniform, Jin was welcomed back by his bandmates J-Hope, Jimin, Jungkook, V, and RM, who played the saxophone to celebrate his return.

Later, BTS posted a photo on X (formerly Twitter) showing all six members together. Jin sat in the middle on a couch with decorations that said, “Jin Is Back.”

The group wrote “I’m home!” under the photo, which got more than one million likes on the platform.

Jin also did a livestream on Weverse for 19 minutes, where he talked with fans and thanked them for supporting him while he was away.

He posted a message thanking reporters and ARMY fans who came to see him after he finished military service. He said sorry for not being able to greet everyone properly because he was worried it would get too crowded.

In January, BTS put out a video on YouTube of Jin celebrating New Year’s with fans while he was still in the military.

“Ta-da everyone! Hello! Seok-jin came to say hi for the new year,” he said. “It’s January, everyone. The new year is here. I’m getting older in January. I’d be in my mid-30s now.”

“I miss you all. I miss you a lot,” Jin added. “Guys, please wait a few more months. Now that it’s the new year, we have a few months left. Make a lot of snowmen and think of me when you make them.”

BTS said they will come back together by 2025 after everyone finishes their military service.

  • BTS’s Jin and HYBE shed light on ‘plan’ for mandatory military service

Korean pop group, BTS has recently performed their concert, Permission To Dance in Las Vegas, The United States (US). The group had attended a press conference at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

While responding to a question during the press conference, BTS member Jin said: “I talked a lot with the company and entrusted all military service-related tasks with the company.”

Their agency HYBE CCO, Lee Jin Hyung also addressed the concerns related to BTS mandatory military service, “The BTS members have currently left the matter of their military service in the hands of the company. BTS has already conveyed the message multiple times that they will accept the call of duty whenever the nation calls them, and they have not changed this opinion. However, the policy on military service has changed a little, and as the members are experiencing changes to the Military Service Act that they did not expect, they are currently monitoring the situation while discussing the matter with the company.”

It is to be noted that South Korea has set the threshold of maximum age limit for a man to get enrolled for mandatory service at 28 years. However, according to a new amendment to a law that was passed in December 2020 was dubbed as “BTS military service amendment”. This law allows artists who receive recognition from the government could delay their military enlistment till they are 30 years old. The changes were done because of the group’s contribution to the economy during the pandemic.

Jin will turn 30 years this year in December so he has to enlist before the end of the year 2022. However, some members proposed a bill in the Korean National Assembly to exempt BTS from mandatory military enlistment on the account of their contribution to the South Korean economy. Currently, this bill is under debate in the National Assembly and has not reached a final agreement on the bill.

CCO further added, “To put it precisely, the policy on military service is changing, and it’s true that the BTS members are having a hard time because it’s difficult for them to predict the timing [of their military service]. Since it’s difficult for them to make plans, both the BTS members and the company are currently keeping a close eye on the proposed amendment.”

In South Korea, every mature man between 18 and 28 age is required to fulfill their military enlistment for about 2 years. Those people who cannot enlist in mandatory military service on the basis of health issues, personal, and religious beliefs can enroll in alternatives such as public service workers.
