    Modi Administration exposed – India’s COVID crisis

    The visuals from our next-door neighbour, India, are just horrendous. The record-breaking surge in coronavirus cases and the reports from India have left the entire world in shock. According to the Indian health ministry, 3,689 people have died within the past 24 hours. Last month, India became the first country in the world to register over 400,000 coronavirus infections in a single day. The situation in India continues to get worse. The second wave of coronavirus has exposed the Modi administration.

    The Modi administration gravely mishandled the COVID-19 crisis in India. From declaring a premature victory after the first wave, the Modi government is now downplaying the crisis. According to a report published in the New York Times, “Interviews from cremation grounds across the country, where the fires never stop, portray an extensive pattern of deaths far exceeding the official figures. Nervous politicians and hospital administrators may be undercounting or overlooking large numbers of dead, analysts say. And grieving families may be hiding Covid connections as well, out of shame, adding to the confusion in this enormous nation of 1.4 billion.”

    We have seen how journalists in India are being attacked online for telling the truth. The Modi government, it seems, is more worried about its international image than handling the crisis. From pro-Modi actors like Kangana Ranaut to media channels like Times Now to websites acting like the government’s mouthpieces, we have seen journalists Rana Ayyub and Barkha Dutt being attacked for their journalism. What is worse is how Indian government is also directly involved in intimidating those critising it. The police in Uttar Pradesh (UP) – a state run by BJP’s Yogi Adityanath – filed a criminal case against a man who used Twitter to appeal for an oxygen cylinder for his grandfather. CM Adityanath also asked the UP administration to “crack down” on hospitals that discharge patients due to shortage of oxygen or “complain” about it to the media. Just a week ago, India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology said it had asked Twitter, Facebook and other social media platforms to remove some posts “in view of the misuse of social media platforms by certain users to spread fake or misleading information”. Such sort of censorship and intimidation just points to one thing: the Modi government is more interested in its image-building than addressing the disastrous COVID-19 crisis. Hospitals across India have run out of beds, oxygen supply is dwindling, the vaccination rollout programme is slow. All of this combined with election rallies and large gatherings that were allowed by the government in recent months led to catastrophic results.

    Pakistan government has offered relief and support to India. Prime Minister Imran Khan as well as others expressed their solidarity with India in this difficult time. We hope and pray that the situation changes for the better in India.

    Responding to Pir’s video in which he hilariously recreated Kangana Ranaut’s recent video, the actor said: “At least you’re funny and made me laugh.”

    “Well we might disagree on many things but at least we can laugh together,” said Pir replying to Ranaut.

    In the original video, Kangana had lashed out at the international media calling their coverage on India’s COVID-19 strategy “disturbing.” Kangana also called out many prominent journalists including Rana Ayyub and Barkha Dutt for questioning the government’s response.

    The actor further said that the liberals were “degrading the country” with their criticism on the government’s response.

    Meanwhile, India has reported a record number of cases with 392,488 new cases in the last 24 hours, pushing the total count to 19.56 million. So far, the virus has killed 215,542 people.

    Indian hospitals, morgues, and crematoriums have been overwhelmed as the country has reported more than 300,000 daily cases for more than 10 days straight. Many families have been left on their own to scramble for medicines and oxygen.

    Nearly 10 Indian states and union territories have imposed some form of restrictions, even as the federal government remains reluctant to impose a national lockdown.

    The eastern state of Odisha became the latest to announce a two-week lockdown, joining Delhi, Maharashtra, Karnataka and West Bengal. Other states, including Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, Assam, Andhra Pradesh and Rajasthan, have either imposed night curfews or weekend lockdowns.

    Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut has made headlines every now and then. Apart from her argument on nepotism, the actress has also been very vocal about her dislike of Pakistan. However, as Twitter in Pakistan trends with hashtags showing solidarity to India, Kangana’s heart, too, turned soft. But she was still misinformed about one detail.

    Taking to Twitter, Kangana wrote: “Heartwarming to see top trend from Pakistan #PakistanstandswithIndia. Narendra Modi provided the country with the vaccine. Nice to see them appreciate his kindness and reciprocate with love. We too acknowledge their empathy in these testing times.” But the actress was misinformed about the vaccine available in Pakistan.

    Pakistan is currently administering Sinopharm and Sputnik, which have been sent from China and Russia, respectively. Some users also clarified that the vaccines in Pakistan were not supplied to them by India.

    As of Saturday, the coronavirus death toll in India stood at 1,66,10,481 with 2,624 fatalities reported in 24 hours, out of which Maharashtra saw the maximum casualties (773) followed by Delhi with 348 daily deaths, reported the Hindustan Times.

    People across the country are scrambling for life-saving oxygen supplies, while patients lay dying outside hospitals. There is a shortage of life-saving medicines and hospital beds too.

    Meanwhile, Prime Minister Imran Khan has also expressed solidarity for the people of India in the current wave of COVID-19.

  • Mumbai police files case against Kangana Ranaut for copyright violation

    Author of the book Didda: The Warrior Queen of Kashmir, Ashish Kaul has accused Kangana Ranaut of copyright violations and approached a local court in this regard after which a case has been filed against the actor by Mumbai police.

    According to a report in Gulf News, Kaul has accused Ranaut of copying content from his book for her film Manikarnika Returns: The Legend Of Didda without permission, claiming that he has exclusive copyrights to the life story of Didda, the Princess of Lohar (Poonch) and the queen of Kashmir.

    As per the complaint, the author had sent an email about the storyline of his book to Kangana, and she used some part of the story in a tweet while announcing her movie without his permission.

    “Is it believable by any stretch of imagination that a story and a book are being usurped by a renowned actor- turned-social activist?” said the writer.

    Kangana is also facing police cases in Mumbai over her allegedly provocative tweets.

    This is not the first time, Kangana has made it to the news for the wrong reasons. She recently had a meltdown after Rihanna extended her support for the farmers’ protest in India.

    Ever since Rihanna extended her support for the farmers’ protest in India, Kangana Ranaut is having a meltdown and has been brutally attacking the singer on social media.

    During the Twitter tirade, Kangana referred to Rihanna as a “porn singer”. The actor also accused the singer’s friend and Canadian politician Jagmeet Singh of being a “terrorist”.

    “There is a Khalistan in his head also,” said Kangana about Jagmeet. “A porn star followed him and that’s his biggest achievement.”

    Responding to Kangana’s tweet, Pakistani comedian Ali Gul Pir asked her to define “porn singer” for him.

    “Porn singer? Is that a singer who makes music for porn films only?” asked Pir.

    “They will refuse to sing for normal films? Please explain further. I didn’t know such a niche existed, just curious,” he added.

    Replying to Pir’s tweet, Kangana explained the meaning of “porn singer” saying: “Someone who can’t sell music without making it sensual/adult. Unlike classical and genuine singers where the body is of no consequence.”

    “A porn singer is hugely dependent on his/her flesh show off, private parts exposure, and mediocre talent. This makes them absolutely massy, and junk,” added Kangana.

    “Like someone who doesn’t have talent, hasn’t done much work and relies on controversy and putting people down to stay in the news,” said Ali after Kangana explained the meaning to him.

    “Thanks for clearing it out for me,” he added.

    To further prove her point, Kangana tweeted pictures of herself and Rihanna side by side.

    What do the protesters want?

    According to details, farmers hailing from northern Punjab and Haryana states, the two biggest agricultural producers, are demanding the repeal of laws passed by the parliament in September that they say will favour large corporate farms, devastate the earnings of many farmers and leave those who hold small plots behind as big corporations win out.

    On the other hand, Modi has billed the laws as necessary to modernise Indian farming.

    At the heart of these protests are Indian farmers’ fears that the government’s moves to introduce market reforms to the farming sector will leave them poorer — at a time when they are already frustrated over their declining clout as the government aims to turn India into a hub for global corporations.

    Just as expected, Kangana Ranaut had a meltdown after Rihanna extended her support for the ongoing farmers’ protest in India. Sharing an article which reported on the internet shut down in several districts of Haryana amid violent clashes between police and farmers over the weekend, the multi-Grammy award-winning singer said: “Why aren’t we talking about this?”

    Soon after Rihanna’s tweet, Kangana, who has been actively slamming those participating in the protests, reacted to the singer’s tweet calling her a “fool” and referring to the farmers as “terrorists”.

    “No one is talking about it because they are not farmers they are terrorists who are trying to divide India so that China can take over our vulnerable broken nation and make it a Chinese colony much like the USA,” wrote an agitated Kangana.

    When Twitter user brought up an old tweet of Kangana’s in which she had said: “Alexa play Diamonds by Rihanna”, the actor lashed out saying: “I took over my account in August last year. Before that, it was a team fan page.”

    “Mujhe na pop music samajh aata hai, na hee main English gaane zyaada sunti hoon,” she added.

    Kangana then launched into a full blown attack against Rihanna, calling her a porn star and saying that there is nothing special about her.

    Meanwhile, Federal Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry has appreciated Rihanna’s gesture of support for the farmers.

    “You have earned the respect of every farmer of the world and particularly of Punjabis all around the world,” said Chaudhry in a tweet. “You have shown your heart is in the right place.”

    “Loads of respect,” he added.

    There is never a dull moment in the life of Kangana Ranaut, whose favourite past time includes picking fights with colleagues and others on social media.

    After a Twitter feud with Diljit Dosanjh, Ranaut is now engaged in a row with Urmila Matondkar, accusing her of illegally purchasing her new offices.

    On January 3, Kangana accused Urmila of buying property worth three crore through illegal means soon after entering politics.

    “Dear Urmila Ji, the houses I built from my hard-earned money are being demolished by the Congress,” wrote Kangana on social media. “By impressing BJP, I have only gotten 25-30 legal cases against me.”

    “I wish I was as smart as you and would’ve kept Congress happy. How foolish of me, no?,” she added.

    In response to Kangana’s allegations, Urmila posted a short video in which she hit back at Ranaut and asked her to meet her so that she can share the property documents with her.

    “Namashkar Kangana Ji,” said Matondkar in the video. “The high regards that you have for me, I have heard them. In fact, the whole country has heard them.”

    “Today, in front of the entire country, I request you to set a place and time and I will bring all my documents there. The documents will carry all the papers of my property,” continued the actor.

    “In 2011, after working hard in the industry for a short span of 25-30 years, I purchased a flat in Andheri,” said Urmila. “I will bring the documents of that flat. I sold that house in the first week of March and I will bring those papers too. And there will also be documents of the flat that I have now purchased from the money that I got. I bought this flat much before I entered politics. I wanted to show you that.”

    Urmila, in the video, also asked Kangana to share a list of people from the industry who she claimed were involved in drugs, as promised.

    “In return what I want is this. Using the money paid by lakhs and crores of taxpayers like me, you were given the Y-plus security by the government because you said you had names of many people whom you wanted to report to the NCB. The whole country is waiting for it today.”

    “I’ll be waiting for your answer,” she concluded.

    Matondkar joined the Indian National Congress on March 27, 2019, and contested from Mumbai North constituency in the 2019 Lok Sabha Election. But she lost the election. On September 10, 2019, she resigned from the party, citing petty internal politics. On December 1, 2020, she joined Shiv Sena.

    Last year in September, Urmila and Kangana were engaged in another Twitter feud after Ranaut referred to Matondkar a ‘soft porn star’ over her political affiliations.

    Punjab star Gippy Grewal has lashed out at Bollywood for not standing up for Punjab at a time when the state needs their support for the ongoing farmers’ protest.

    Rupinder Singh Grewal, popular by his stage name Gippy Grewal, took to Twitter and wrote that for years Punjab had welcomed Bollywood with open arms but its silence over the issue was painful.

    “Dear Bollywood, Every now and then your movies have been shot in Punjab and every time you have been welcomed with open heart. But today when Punjab needs you the most, you didn’t show up and speak a word. Disappointed,” the 37-year-old singer tweeted.

    In response to Gippy’s tweet, Taapsee Pannu said that there are artistes in Bollywood who have always been vocal about contentious issues, including the farmers’ protests, and she found his generalised comment “demotivating”.

    Replying to the actor, Grewal said his tweet wasn’t for Pannu and others who are supporting the farmers, but for those who call themselves Punjabi.

    “My tweet was for them who call themselves from Punjab and not utter even a single word. They all vanish,” the singer added.

    Earlier, Kangana Ranaut and Diljit Dosanjh were involved in a Twitter feud over the ongoing farmer’s protests in India in which Diljit gave Kangana a piece of his mind and called her out for propagating hate.

    An epic Twitter feud between Kangana Ranaut and Diljit Dosanjh over the ongoing farmer’s protests in India is making headlines across the subcontinent. In case, you have no idea what happened, keep reading.

    The fight started when Dosanjh hit out at Ranaut for misidentifying an elderly Sikh woman from the farmers’ protest as Bilquis Bano – the octogenarian who made international headlines during the anti-CAA protests earlier this year in the Delhi neighbourhood of Shaheen Bagh – and said the woman joined the protest for Rs 100 only. Ranaut later deleted the tweet after she was called out for spreading misinformation.

    Sharing a video of the woman speaking on the issue, Dosanjh advised Kangana to listen to the video.

    “One should not be this blind,” he added.

    What followed was an ugly war of words with Dosanjh counter-attacking in Punjabi. Kangana did not hold herself back while attacking Diljit, referring to him as “Karan Johar ke paltu“.

    In response to this, Dosanjh told Kangana that she is well-versed with the art of playing with people’s emotions. No surprises there. The actor has on several occasions also propagated hate against Pakistan.

    Kangana continued to drag KJo into the conversation without any reason. Her hatred for the filmmaker is hardly a secret.

    Diljit further pointed out to Kangana that he is a Punjabi and not a “Bollywood wala” and that Bollywood invites him to do films.

    Kangana then hit back by accusing the Punjabi singer of provoking farmers against the country.

    When one Twitter user called out the actor for insinuating that Johar offers work in exchange for sex, Kangana attacked him also.

    However, Diljit did not stop and continued to school Kangana over her irresponsible statements.

    Other Punjabi artists including Mika Singh and Gippy Grewal stepped in to support Diljit and voice their distaste over Kangana’s comments.

    Case registered against Kangana

    Meanwhile, the Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) has sent a legal notice to actor Kangana Ranaut, seeking an unconditional apology for her “derogatory” tweets against farmers and activists involved in the protest against the Centre’s farm laws. They have also requested Ranaut to remove the particular tweets.

    “We have sent a legal notice to Kangana for her derogatory tweet calling the aged mother of a farmer as a woman available for Rs 100. Her tweets portray farmers protest as anti-national. We demand an unconditional apology from her for her insensitive remarks on farmers protest,” said president of DSGMC Manjinder Singh Sirsa, in a tweet.

    Indian jewellery ad slammed for showing Hindu-Muslim couple

    Popular Indian jewellery brand Tanishq has withdrawn an advertisement featuring an interfaith couple after a right-wing backlash on social media, BBC News has reported.

    Opponents of the adverts argued that the ad, which shows a baby shower organised for the Hindu bride by her Muslim in-laws, promotes “love jihad”, a term radical Hindu groups use to accuse Muslim men of converting Hindu women by marriage.

    The description for the 43-second ad – promoting a jewellery line called ‘Ekatvam‘ (Hindi word for unity) – reads: “She is married into a family that loves her like their own child. Only for her, they go out of their way to celebrate an occasion that they usually don’t. A beautiful confluence of two different religions, traditions and cultures.”

    The ad sparked outrage among a section of conservative social media users who led calls to boycott the brand, taking it to the top of Twitter trends. On the other hand, many joined in to condemn the abusive posts and comments.

    The brand first disabled comments and Likes/Dislikes on the advert, posted to Facebook and YouTube before removing the video altogether. In a statement, the jewellery brand said: “We are deeply saddened with the inadvertent stirring of emotions and withdraw this film keeping in mind the hurt sentiments and well being of our employees, partners and store staff.”

    Congress party MP Shashi Tharoor, who posted the advert to his Twitter account, said: “Hindutva bigots have called for a boycott for highlighting Hindu-Muslim unity through this beautiful ad. If Hindu-Muslim ‘ekatvam‘ irks them so much, why don’t they boycott the longest surviving symbol of Hindu-Muslim unity – India?”

    Kangana Ranaut, on the other hand, stood with the right-wingers and slammed the ad for promoting love-jihad.

    “As Hindus we need to be absolutely conscious of what these creative terrorists are injecting in to our subconscious, we must scrutinise, debate and evaluate what is the outcome of any perception that is fed to us, this is the only way to save our civilisation,” wrote the actor on social media.
