    Karachi Jirga orders killing of couple for marrying of their free will

    A Jirga in the Manghopir area of Karachi ordered the killing of a young couple who married of their own free will, ARY News has said.

    Police sources told ARY News that the couple- identified as Saira (20) and Adil (22)- was found dead inside their home in Manghopir on Monday, and the parents of both the husband and wife gave their consent to the murder.

    “Initially, both parties refused to register the murder case,” informed the police.

    The woman identified as Saira. Her mother and maternal aunt played a key role in the dual murder.

    “The slain woman’s mother called the killers to the home. They entered the house and opened fire and also used knives in the gruesome dual murder crime,” says the police sources.

    Four 30-bore spent bullets, two coins and other things were recovered from the crime scene.

    However, Dawn reported that the victims were residents of Husain D’Silva Town in North Nazimabad. After tying the knot on their free will, they went into hiding and started living in Manghopir because the girl’s parents were against their marriage.

    Area SHO Bashir Ahmed said that it appeared that her relatives traced the couple.

    Initial investigations suggest that the couple originally hailed from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the SHO revealed.

    The bodies were shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital to fulfil medical and legal formalities.

    The meteorological department has predicted rain in different cities today.

    Rain may occur in some parts of Karachi, Islamabad, Lahore, Gujarat, Faisalabad, Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa today, as per the weather department.

    Battered with heat, Karachi is expected to receive rain this evening. Drizzling is expected in other areas of Sindh, such as Umarkot, Tharparkar, Mirpurkhas, Mithi, Sanghar, Thatta, Badin, and Sjawal are also likely.

    The Meteorological Department reported that the highest rainfall was recorded yesterday (Sunday)at Old Airport, around 20 mm, while 11 mm was recorded at Sarjani Town and 9.4 mm at Jinnah Terminal. Ten mm of rain was recorded on University Road, 7 mm on Shaara Faisal, 6.5 mm on Hassan Square, 2.5 mm on PAF Base Masrur, and 0.8 mm on North Karachi.

    Rain is also likely to descend in Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir today.

    The Provincial Disaster Management Authority has predicted the fourth spell of monsoon to start in Punjab from today, while south Punjab is likely to experience cloudy skies from tomorrow.

    As Karachi grapples with an intense heat wave, meteorological analyst Jawad Memon has devised a reason for the spike in temperatures, attributing the heat to humid winds and moisture from the Arabian Sea.

    Geo reports that Memon has said that instead of experiencing rain during the monsoon in Karachi, temperatures are higher than normal. The sea surface temperature of the Arabian Sea has been above normal for the past few months, absorbing more heat into the atmosphere.

    The meteorological analyst has stated that humid winds are also blowing into the city from the northeast. Due to the moist winds and moisture from the Arabian Sea, temperatures exceed 55 degrees Celsius.

    The abnormally high pressure near Iran prevents the monsoon winds from reaching Karachi, Thatta, and Badin. High pressure is expected to persist for one to two days before likely decreasing.

    The analyst also notes that light to moderate rain is expected in Karachi from July 19 to 21. After July 22, sea breezes are expected to return to normal, with a significant monsoon spell expected in Karachi in August.

    Following an invitation extended by the government and the local Bohra community, Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin, the spiritual leader of the Bohra community, arrived in Karachi on July 4 to host ‘Ashara Mubaraka’ congregations this year.

    Over 80,000 Dawoodi Bohras from Pakistan and around the world are expected to attend the events. He delivered the first sermon of “Ashara Mubaraka” in Taheri Masjid, Saddar, on July 8.

    A Dawn report states that Syedna addressed a majlis of “over 80,000 attendees” with Bohra members from diverse areas and professions gathered in Karachi for a single purpose — the remembrance and commemoration of the martyrdom of Imam Husain.

    Syedna elaborated upon a number of hadith by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) which highlight the role of conviction and self-growth in the sermon.

    For instance, he quoted the Prophet’s statement regarding the honeybee which “consumes only that which is pure, and gives back only that which is pure”.

    Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin, 77, is currently serving as the 53rd al-Dai al-Mutlaq and present leader of the worldwide Dawoodi Bohra community. He is currently as a Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University.

    Bohra community trace themselves back to Fatimis who held the caliphate from 10th to 12th century.

    The bodies of a six-year-old girl and her two-year-old brother were recovered, along with their mother’s, from a drain near their home in Mauripur, Karachi.

    The children were subjected to sexual assault before being killed, an investigation into the matter has revealed.

    The bodies of the missing 25-year-old woman, her six-year-old daughter and two-year-old son were found in a drain close to their home in Sher Muhammad Village, Mauripur, on Saturday, June 29.

    The father of the children, the complainant, told the police that his wife and two children went out of the home to meet Mehran Bibi for ‘religious and spiritual treatment’ on June 28 but disappeared for more than 24 hours and were found dead inside a drain.

    Dawn’s Imtiaz Ali reported that Police Surgeon Summaiya Syed, after a post-mortem examination, ‘confirmed’ that both the minor girl and her brother were raped, adding that the girl was subjected to a ‘brutal’ sexual assault.

    She also asserted that they had not ruled out the possibility of the mother being raped till the receipt of chemical reports, etc.

    The police surgeon also ensured that it was not a natural death, but the exact cause of death had been reserved till receipt of reports.

    However, DIG South Syed Asad Raza told Dawn that the case had been registered even though it appeared that the woman’s husband was not ‘interested’ in pursuing the murder case of his wife and children seriously.

    He seemed ‘aware’ of something but was hiding it from the investigators. Thus, the police were interrogating him, his cousin and other relatives to get clues about the real culprits but so far, no one has been formally arrested.

    Karachi Commissioner Syed Hasan Naqvi has denied the reported death toll of the heatwave that has engulfed the coastal city, asserting that the actual number of deaths is lower than claimed and remains unconfirmed by officials.

    Speaking at a press briefing on Wednesday, the commissioner disclosed that ten people had succumbed to heatstroke over the past two days, with approximately 1,700 cases of heatstroke reported across the city.

    Providing specifics on recent fatalities, Naqvi stated that eight deaths occurred on Monday and two on Tuesday.

    Meanwhile, the Edhi Foundation estimated around 568 deaths from heatwave-related medical emergencies, and the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan voiced concerns on the impact of the extreme weather and its extent.

    It is reportedly the first time since 2015 that temperatures in Karachi reached 42°C in June, with “feels like” temperatures peaking at 51°C.

    Addressing the unverified reporters, the commissioner urged welfare organisations to verify death figures with government authorities before releasing them to the public.

    Naqvi also instructed Karachi-Electric (KE) to refrain from load shedding between 12am and 6am during the heatwave, which typically lasts two to three days.

    The Karachi administration has established 124 heatwave centres equipped with water facilities as well as specialised wards in hospitals to provide medical aid to those affected by heatwave.

    Shabir Dar emphasised that despite the challenges, including the absence of veterinary doctors from the livestock department, it is crucial for the department to ensure the supply of care and medicines.

    Yesterday, following the mercury hitting 41 degrees Celsius in Karachi, concerns among residents escalated. Over the past four days, more than 70 people affected by extreme heat sought treatment at Civil and Jinnah Hospitals.

    Dr. Nizam, AMS Civil Hospital, reported that 67 heat-affected individuals were admitted to the emergency room, predominantly elderly or those suffering from various illnesses.

    Chief Meteorologist Sardar Sarfraz has forecast a partial heatwave in Karachi for the next two days, attributing the intensified heat to changing winds. Temperatures are expected to decrease after two days, with monsoon rains likely starting in the first week of July.

    The administration of Civil Hospital in Karachi has reported the death of eight patients due to severe dehydration among 40 to 45 heat-affected individuals brought to the emergency room. The deceased suffered from co-morbidities such as epilepsy, diabetes, and high blood pressure.

    Meanwhile, the meteorological department has forecasted intense heat for the next two days in Karachi. Health experts have advised citizens to avoid direct sunlight, stay hydrated, and wear light-coloured, loose clothing.

    For the second consecutive day, Karachi experienced scorching temperatures in to the absence of sea breezes during the day, leading to severe heat discomfort among residents.

    Additionally, rescue sources reported the discovery of seven bodies of drug addicts from various parts of the city today, bringing the total to 17 deaths in the last two days.

    Temperatures soared to 42 degrees Celsius, with the ‘Feels Like’ at 50 degrees in some areas such as Gulistan Johar where apartments recorded 43.7 degrees Celsius.

    Furthermore, water supply disruptions were reported across Karachi during the heatwave. Areas like Federal B Area Blocks 19 and 20, as well as Kharadar, faced water shortages. Protests erupted in Baldia Naval Colony and Musa Colony due to the lack of water and electricity.
