A startup, ‘Rent a bro’, in Karachi has started a setup to help people cope with loneliness, especially after the pandemic hit the globe.
The founder of the startup told Independent Urdu, “I started this service because I was doing research when I got to know that we have problems like rejection, loneliness and acceptance. So I took this initiative and it is going very well.”
“Rent a bro is inspired by Rent a sister — a company in Japan that helps people to cope with loneliness. So I started this because I am a male and I think it is a perfect name for a Pakistani startup,” he added.
Talking about the process, he said that an Instagram handler asks our clients why they need a brother and then we provide them this service after analysing their answers.
The meeting can be online and in-person. It depends on the client’s preference.
A suspect detained in a sexual assault case escaped from Karachi’s Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) where he was undergoing treatment a few days ago, Dawn reported.
As per details, the man was arrested by the Saeedabad police a couple of weeks ago. He was sent to jail by a local court on judicial remand. He was not feeling well so the doctors recommended his treatment at the JPMC.
“The Undertrial prisoner was brought here at the JPMC a few days ago and being treated at a respective ward,” said an official at the Saddar police station. “On Friday, he managed to unlock his handcuffs and fled. The two constables posted to keep an eye on him have been booked [for negligence] and arrested,” he added.
Some reports claim that the suspect has been arrested again from the Saeedabad area.
A large number of people from the transgender community and their supporters protested outside the Karachi Press Club against a recent attack on its community by an alleged gang-rape group known as ‘Beelas’.
The protesters also denounced what they called “the beela culture” that has existed in Pakistan since the colonial era.
A transgender rights activist Dr Muhammad Moiz organised the protest. He posted the pictures on social media along with the demands and needs of the community in Pakistan.
“Help us dismantle these structures and create a more just and equitable world for everyone by not being silent bystanders as groups like the beela network inflict violence on our community,” Moiz wrote while sharing the pictures from the protest.

Earlier, Moiz came forward to share an incident of organised violence against him by the group [Beela]. A First Information Report (FIR) was registered by him.
In the video, he shared that on the night of September 19, he and his friends went to a birthday celebration of a friend, where the gang-rape group was already present. According to him, the group [Beelas] wanted to rape the ‘londay‘ (khwaja sira/effeminate boys) present there.
In his recent post, he has demanded a special committee overseeing khwaja sira in Sindh and a special helpline that khwaja siras can use in an emergency.
“The police must be sensitised to understand beelas’ behavior, while also addressing internal issues in the police departments that prevent most khwaja siras from launching FIRs,” he said in a caption.
Pakistani students designed a Formula Electric car, which won the second position in a competition held in Russia’s capital city Moscow, ARY News reported.
As per details, the team consisted of 35 engineering students from a private university. The Pakistani team was a runner-up in the competition in which 20 teams participated.
Uzair Mudassir and Saad Ahmed, who were part of the team, said in ARY’s morning show ‘Bakhabar Savera’ that designing the car was a learning curve for them and they want to show a positive image of Pakistan to the world.
They said that technology is evolving every day and it was important for them to represent Pakistan on a global scale.
Uzair Mudassir mentioned that they wanted the world to know that Pakistan has many students who are skilled in the field and have a passion to move forward.
The police have rescued a woman from an apartment in Karachi’s Marwari Line of the Ranchore Line neighbourhood after a neighbor hinted that she was imprisoned, Aamir Majeed reported for Samaa News.
Eidgah Assistant Sub-Inspector Zahid Mehmood told Samaa Digital that they received a complaint on police helpline 15 Madadgar by a man who identified himself as Junaid to make them aware of the suspected hostage in Jannat Bibi Building.
A police team instantly went to the venue where a large number of people were gathered outside the building. According to ASI Mehmood, when they entered the single-room apartment, there was a very weak woman covered in a bedsheet. The woman was so weak that she could not even walk. She was taken to Civil Hospital, Karachi, for rehabilitation in an ambulance.
According to ASI Mehmood, neighbours caught her brother — identified as Iqbal — and handed him over to the police.
An FIR was registered against her brother on the complaint of the victim’s maternal uncle Muhammad Hassan. He told the police that the woman’s parents had passed away and her brother took her with him three years ago and did not contact the extended family.
Junaid contacted the police and said that Iqbal was living in an apartment that he had rented two-and-a-half years ago. Everyone knew Iqbal lived with his sister there but no one ever saw her. He claimed that sometimes they heard her crying, but no one interfered, thinking it was a personal matter.
Junaid told the police that people in the area suspected that something was wrong after someone threw used condoms out of the apartment. Though the apartment was locked, the women of the area tried to look inside through a window. They saw a woman lying naked.
District City SSP Sarfaraz Nawaz said that a woman medico-legal officer examined the victim.
“According to the WMLO, the victim was raped,” he confirmed. The police have acquired semen samples from the suspect and sent them for tests. Further investigation is underway.

A senior female doctor who works at a major public sector hospital in Karachi says that she is being harassed and blackmailed for the last several months on gender and ethnic grounds and being forced to quit her job.
The doctor is in-charge of the hospital’s gastroenterology and hepatology ward. She claims she is the only female gastroenterologist working at any public sector hospital in Pakistan.
“I’m in charge of the Gastroenterology and Hepatology Ward at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) and the only female gastroenterologist working at any public sector hospital in entire Pakistan. I have been harassed and blackmailed for the last several months on the basis of my gender and ethnicity,” Dr Nazish Butt told Waqar Bhatti of The News.
She showed several messages sent to her, accusing her of being a “non-Sindhi” and “a draconian lady”, who is not allowing ‘natives’ to work at the hospital. She said she was constantly receiving calls from unknown numbers.
“First of all, I’m a Pakistani citizen who was born in Karachi. I have studied in this city and graduated from the Sindh Medical College. I even married a person who is Sindhi-speaking, but still, some people, including some staff members [of the hospital], are harassing me. They are doing negative propaganda against me, which has made me mentally disturbed,” the publication reported her as saying.
“I have filed several complaints with the relevant authorities against this harassment and blackmailing. but now I want to make my ordeal public and urge the high authorities to take notice of this hooliganism. They call me a Punjabi woman, hurl abuses at me, put baseless posts on Facebook, and then send it to me and my colleagues on WhatsApp. This should end now,” she added.
Dr Butt stated that she was bringing this issue to the notice of the newly-appointed executive director at the JPMC, Dr Shahid Rasool. She also urged provincial health minister Dr Azra Pechuho to take notice of this harassment.

One of the most-wanted target killers, Shaheen Bihari, committed suicide in Karachi’s Orangi Town because he was afraid of the raids and being arrested, Geo News reported.
Police claim that target killer Shaheen Bihari has committed suicide out of fear of arrest.
The incident took place in Orangi Town Mansoor Nagar area of Karachi. The deceased has been identified as Shaheen Bihari, an alleged target killer.
Police found a pistol and a letter written before the suicide at the scene.
According to SSP West, Shaheen Bihari along with his accomplice Asif Bhiya had murdered ASI Akram Khan at a hotel in Orangi on August 28.
Bihari wrote in the letter that he had thrown away the pistol which he had used to shoot the ASI. “I am committing suicide with another pistol.”
According to Sahai Aziz, Asif Bhaya, an accomplice of the accused, was arrested by Rangers and police recently. Shaheen Bihari is also seen in the CCTV footage of the incident.

A woman named Jameela fixes motorcycles to earn a living in Karachi, Shahjahan Khurram reported for Geo News.
Jameela has set up a small shop near the popular Lakhpati Hotel where she sells and changes motorcycle engine oil for customers.
“I have been doing this for the past 35 years,” she said. “I do it for my family — for roti, kapra and makaan,” she added.
Jameela Khatoon said that her business is the only legacy of her deceased husband. Jameela’s husband died of cancer and she lost her adopted son to a disease, after which Jameela had to become the sole breadwinner of her house.

She used to have six labourers at her shop to help her out.
“But they wanted to take over my business by force. I could not let them do that,” she said
The workers threatened her she would “die hungry” if she let them go.
“I accepted their challenge and told them I will not let that happen. It is due to Allah’s will and His love for me that I am still earning my bread here.”

Jameela Khatoon has to feed her four grandchildren and the widow of her adopted son.
“Hum sab saath mein chalte hain (we do everything together),” she said.
Life was easier when she had workers working for her. Now, she opens her shop at 10:30-11:00 am and works till midnight. Jameela Khatoon says people who come by to get their motorcycles serviced always treat her with respect.
“They all address me as khaala (aunt), amma (mother), aunty,” she says, but recalls that she faced catcalls and harassment when she was younger.
She says that shopkeepers nearby do not bother her.
“I don’t need their support — I give support to them,” she says, adding that if something were to happen to them, she would “stand by them like a wall”.
Jameela wants the government to support her financially to help her set up a bigger shop for her business.
“I wish the government would give me a loan or provide me a shop where I can carry out my work in a better way,” she says. “A shop where I can sell spare parts and fix punctures.”
“If the government is watching this video, then I hope it shakes their conscience a bit,” she says.
