  • Karachi listed among the world’s least liveable cities

    The Economist Intelligence Unit’s (EIU) Global Liveability Index 2021 has listed Karachi among the least liveable cities in the world, Geo News has reported. The city has ranked the as the seventh least liveable city in the world.

    Meanwhile, Auckland has been ranked as the world’s most liveable city.

    Earlier in February, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) declared Lahore the ‘City of Literature’ and Lahore became the first city in the country to have received this title.

    Madadgar 15 cop turns out to be street criminal

    Police arrested a Madadgar 15 cop who was involved in street crimes in Karachi.  

    As per reports, the Shah Faisal police arrested Madadgar 15 cop, Aqeel and his two partners after an inquiry was done against the suspect.

    The police took an action against the cop after numerous complaints were reported by several citizens.

    The police also recovered one pistol, three mobile phones and a wallet from their possession. Police also filed a FIR against the gang.

    There has been a sharp increase in robbery incidents in Karachi. Earlier, a gang posing as officials of the police’s special branch robbed the house of the mother of ex-Karachi commissioner.

    The muggers posing as the police officials managed to enter the house of the mother of former Karachi commissioner, Sohail Rajput and looted cash and other valuables.

    Security Guard turns assassin, injuring 9 on Sami Khan’s drama set in Karachi

    At least nine crew members were injured on Wednesday when a security guard opened fire on the set of a drama serial, Mohabbat Dagh Ki Surat at a residence in Karachi’s Khayaban-e-Shujaat, DHA.

    The security guard stationed at the bungalow where the shooting was taking place, identified as Gul Bhai, opened fire after an argument with the producer of the drama, according to a statement issued by the Karachi Police media cell.

    “Police have arrested [the] security guard with a rifle,” the police statement said, adding that all the injured crew members were shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC).

    As per a video shared on social media, the incident occurred after the producer had an argument with the guard over food.

    Actors Sami Khan and Asma Abbasi were reportedly present at the shooting location when this horrendous incident occured but are thankfully safe. They were shooting for the series, Mohabbat Dagh Ki Surat by 7th Sky Entertainment for Geo TV.

    No casualties have been reported and the Police is currently investigating this case further.

    Yasir Hussain took to his Instagram stories and addressed the incident, saying: “The guard didn’t shoot the actors or the producers at the shoot. But those poor workers that are working on set for Rs1,000 per day,” he said. “They’re not the ones sitting in the AC, and eat outside in the parking lot,” he explained.

    “With the guard, the production house should also be punished. This ugly system should be punished,” he urged.

    His comments highlight important criticism of the entertainment industry and the way it treats labour.

    Hussain wants them to be given health insurance, which should be a must for all workers. Healthcare insurance should be a basic right for everyone employed in a country that doesn’t provide free healthcare.

    PSL 6 faces flight delays, logistical problems

    Sixth edition of Pakistan Super League is facing flight delays and logistical problems are being discussed by Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) with the franchise owners.

    PSL contingent of 233 participants including players, support staff, broadcasting crew and PCB officials are still in Lahore and Karachi hotels after another delay in flight. The flight to Abu Dhabi has been delayed thrice in the last 36 hours which is brewing confusion, however, PCB has informed in the latest update that flights from Karachi and Lahore will leave at 5 pm today.

    The 25 PSL participants in Lahore and Karachi hotels haven’t got their visas and are still inside the bio-secure bubble.

    There was an urgent meeting called earlier today between PCB and franchises owners. In the online meeting, the franchise stakeholders were informed about the delay of South Africa and India’s technical staff chartered flights and PCB reiterated its resolve to solve all impending issues, taking all concerned into confidence. The backup plan of moving matches to Sharjah was also reportedly brought up in the meeting.

    In a statement issued after the meeting, the PCB said the franchises were updated on the unanticipated delays in the grant of landing permissions for chartered flights from India and South Africa.

    “The PCB is exploring all possible solutions to overcome these hurdles,” the statement read, adding that flights from Karachi and Lahore will depart today as per schedule.

    Reportedly, the broadcast crew from India and South Africa was not given permission to land in Abu Dhabi and now the PCB will make alternative arrangements and officials from those countries which are not on the red list will be engaged for the league.

    “The visas of at least  four individuals are still awaited and they will depart for Abu Dhabi later.”

    The statement added that holding the remaining 20 PSL matches was proving difficult under the current circumstances.

    According to a report, another  meeting of the PCB and franchise owners will be held in the evening.

    This is the third time the players and officials’ departure for the UAE has been postponed.

    The flight was previously scheduled to leave for the UAE at 8:00 am on Wednesday, which was later rescheduled to Thursday, 3 pm.

    And now the players and officials present at the hotels in Karachi and Lahore will fly for the UAE at 5pm.

    Former Pakistan cricketer and commentator Ramiz Raja had said that they will leave for the airport at 3pm.

    “Lot of speculations regarding the PSL on TV news channels. Latest on PSL travel is that we are moving out from the hotel at 3pm to go to the airport. So all is good.”

    Meanwhile, players and other staff have checked out from the hotel in Karachi and have departed for the airport.

    A pet lion cub attacked a 10-year-old boy in Karachi’s residential area.

    A video that is widely circulating on social media shows a lion suddenly attacking a young kid as he walks by, despite having a leash tied around its neck.

    The boy was taken to a nearby hospital where he has been declared to be out of danger.

    The police have arrested a security guard and a man identified as Saad. The lion’s owner has allegedly escaped and has been identified as Usama. The police are conducting raids to arrest him. A case will be registered after police arrest the owner.

    Talking to Samaa, the investigating officer said: “Usama is involved in the illegal trade of wild animals,” the investigating officer said. The suspect’s brother was taking the animal to his friend’s house when the incident took place.

    “Usama has escaped along with the lion,” the officer added.

    According to wildlife conservator Javed Mahar, the case has been taken up by the Sindh Wildlife Department. An inquiry is in progress and legal action will be taken.

    As per reports, police have received information that the owner of the lion and the boy have reached a compromise and that the owner of the lion did not have a permit to keep the animal.

    While many are appreciating Pakistani celebrities for raising their voice for Palestine, others have their priorities displaced and are moral policing Mahira Khan for not wearing a dupatta to the pro-Palestine protest outside the Karachi Press Club on Wednesday.

    Yasir Hussain and Ahmed Ali Butt stepped forward to defend their colleague and hit back at trolls moral policing Mahira for not wearing a dupatta.

    Bohot achy,” remarked Hussain sarcastically. “You get your summer looks with shorts and Mahira should wear a dupatta in the heat of May.”

    “Get out of clothing and talk about real issues,” asserted Yasir, adding: “Khuda ka khof karo (Fear God).”

    Ahmed Ali Butt also schooled trolls attacking Mahira, saying: “Jin logo ko dupatta nazar nahi aya unko aqal kahan se nazar ai ge? Sharam apni nazar main dhoondo, aurat kay libas main nahi. #growup”

    Meanwhile, Sheheryar Munawar, Ayesha Omar, Sanam Jung among others celebrities were spotted at the protest. Yasir could not attend the demonstration due to his surgery after suffering a hand injury. 

    Yasir protested, however, with a Palestinian flag on his bandage.

    Mathira also defended Mahira, saying: “It’s the mindset that needs to be changed. Stop being so sex hungry in your mind, stop it!!”

    Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office announced a ceasefire on Friday in Gaza after 11 days of violence, Al Jazeera has reported.

     An underage boy has been seen driving a milk-laden vehicle in Karachi.

    According to details, the boy was spotted driving a vehicle without a number plate at Malir National Highway. The vehicle was loaded with milk drums.

    A sleeping man can be seen sitting beside the boy in the vehicle in the video. The driving of untrained and underage drivers can result in traffic accidents in the city and the traffic police should ensure implementation of the rules.

    Massive dust storm, rain hits parts of Karachi

    Various parts of Karachi were hit by a dust storm and received rainfall on Tuesday.

    The weather took a sudden turn as dark clouds covered most parts of the city and a dust storm appeared on the horizon.

    Pakistan Meteorological Department’s Director Sardar Sarfaraz has said that ‘thunder cells has developed’ over Karachi due to the sweltering heat.

    “Winds are blowing from the northeast. The clouds are forming in the northern part of the city,” he said. Sarfaraz added that the PMD had warned of strong winds when it issued the threat advisory for Cyclone Tauktae a couple of days ago.

    The PMD official also said that the sweltering heat in Karachi will reduce from tomorrow, adding that the dark clouds will no longer be visible in Karachi in a couple of hours. 

    A few dust/thunderstorm-rain accompanied with gusty winds of 30-50 Kmph may occur in Tharparker and Umerkot districts during next 12 hours. Hot and dry weather will continue today in Karachi, Hyderabad, Shaeed- Banzirabad, Badin and Mirpurkhas districts.

    Sea Conditions will remain rough till this evening and fishermen of Sindh are advised to avoid going into deep sea. They can resume their activities from tomorrow, the weather alert added.
