    Eid ul Azha: Karachi woman sells cows at a cattle market

    A woman, Ayesha Ghani has been selling sacrificial cows in Karachi’s cattle market ahead of Eid-ul-Azha 2020.

    Karachi’s cattle market at Super Highway is one of the most prominent cattle markets in the country and the 21-year-old is breaking stereotypes by selling the sacrificial animals at the cattle market

    According to details, Ghani lives in Karachi and goes to the market every day, selling at least 36 of her cows, bulls and calves on sale, with a price ranging from PKR 130,000 to PKR 700,000.

    “I have raised these animals at home on my own. That’s why I have a special affection towards them”, said Ayesha Ghani.

    Ghani also sells animals online on her social media sites  ‘Desi Cows’.

    “Most buyers are looking for animals available at economical prices, while prices have increased this year due to inflation,” she said, adding that the business has affected this year amid coronavirus outbreak.

    “I have been an animal lover all my life. However, this is the first time that I am personally selling animals in the market,” she said.

    Ghani hoped that women would get encouraged to see her and get more involved in this work. However, the challenges that she faces being a woman, standing in a male-dominated market are “bound to surface at first”.

    “After all, girls do face a lot of difficulties in our society but I have taken the first step and hope to see more women and girls stepping forward,” Ghani said.

    “Today, women are second to none and they should not consider themselves inferior to anyone. We can progress in every field,” she added.

    PM Imran refuses to accept Aamir Liaquat Hussain’s resignation

    Televangelist and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) lawmaker in the National Assembly, Aamir Liaquat Hussain, has claimed that Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan has rejected his resignation letter.

    “After a long meeting with PM Imran Khan, my four-page resignation was rejected. I opened my heart told the PM everything. The PM hailed my efforts for raising my voice for Karachi’s issues and said thinking about the public was the role of an elected leader,” he tweeted on Monday.

    Earlier in the day, Hussain had posted on social media that he was on his way to the PM House to submit his resignation.

    Last week, he had announced resigning as an MNA from Karachi over prolonged unannounced power outages in the port city.

    “I confess that I am a helpless MNA of Karachi. I am unable to provide electricity to the people of my city. I cannot see the people of my city suffer. I will ask the prime minister for time and submit my resignation,” he had said.

    A spike in power outages is spelling misery for a major chunk of the metropolis’ residents with some areas having interrupted electric supply for weeks now.

    This, however, is not the first time that the PTI MNA has been in the news for being upset at his party.

    In 2018, a month after the general election, reports had emerged of differences between Hussain and the PTI after he had expressed anger with the party over failure to invite him to a dinner hosted at the Governor’s House.

    According to reports, Liaquat left a WhatsApp group comprising PTI Sindh’s leaders over the issue.

    Indian man travels 1200 kilometres to meet girlfriend in Pakistan

    An Indian man hailing from Maharashtra, Siddiqui Mohammad Zishan, travelled nearly 1200 kilometres to meet a girl from Shah Faisal town in Karachi, Pakistan. According to details, Zishan, who is an engineering student, befriended the girl on Facebook and had been communicating with her over social media including Facebook and Whatsapp. Zishan wanted to cross the border and come to Pakistan using Google Maps.

    However, the 20-year-old’s plans were cut short when the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) caught him in Gujarat’s Rann of Kutch while he was trying to cross over to the other side of the border on foot. The young man revealed that he had travelled nearly 1200-odd kilometres to meet his friend.

    According to reports, he was found by BSF personnel in a dehydrated condition and had fainted.  An ATM card and other documents like Aadhaar card helped security officials identify him.

    During the search operation, the BSF also found a bike that the youth had abandoned when he reached close to the border. He had used the bike to travel from his hometown in Maharashtra. The young man was caught about 1.5 kilometres away from the Indo-Pakistan international border based on information shared by the Crime Branch of Maharashtra Police. The police added that Zishan had started walking towards Pakistan after his motorcycle got stuck in the sand.

    The Maharashtra Police had informed the Gujarat Police about a missing complaint that had been filed by the parents of the man. The Gujarat Police with the help of the Border Security Force personnel traced the young man by tracking his mobile phone.

    The BSF has handed over the young man to the police for further investigation and so that his story can be verified.

    The Punjab government has considered reopening marriage halls in the province from the first week of September after country-wide protests by halls association against continuous closure of businesses during the coronavirus pandemic.

    According to reports, the Marriage Halls Association on Monday threatened to march towards the Chief Minister House in Karachi if they were not allowed to restart their businesses under suggested coronavirus SOPs.

    Head of the Marriage Halls Association Rana Raees said that wedding halls remained closed till date due to the coronavirus spread.

    “The government has allowed other businesses to reopen under devised SOPs. However they remain reluctant to allow marriage halls to operate,” he said.

    He said that they had given a sample to the government to reopen marriage halls while following the SOPs.

    “We have gone bankrupt due to the ongoing financial crisis amid the pandemic,” said Raees and demanded the government to allow halls to resume their work under SOPs.

    He also warned that if the ban will continue then they could extend the scope of their protest and could march towards the chief minister’s house for the fulfilment of their demands.

    Following the protests, the Punjab government announced that the marriage halls will be allowed to operate in the province from the first week of September if the coronavirus situation improves in the province.

    Provincial Minister for Commerce Mian Aslam Iqbal reached out to the protesting owners of the wedding halls outside the Punjab Assembly.

    “You will be allowed to arrange wedding functions from the first week of September,” he said adding that he would meet their representatives for outsourcing functions after two days.

    The protestors, however, refused to accept his offer and demanded to immediately reopen activities of the marriage halls.

    Karachi police station gives shelter to newly-wed girl after husband abandons her

    A newly-wed girl from Nawabshah reportedly found shelter at a women’s police station in the metropolis’ west zone after her husband abandoned her.

    According to details, the women’s police station staff is searching for the family of the young girl. The girl said she got married to a man named Ahmed six months ago. After a few weeks, her husband kicked her out of the house. She had to come to Karachi as she was left with no other option.

    After being admitted to a shelter home in Karachi’s Central district, the facility’s management found her uncles and sent her to their house. However, her uncles also refused to keep her at their home. Since then, the girl had nowhere to go.

    For now, she has taken refuge at the Liaquatabad women’s police station. According to the girl, her mother had died and her only brother also passed away two-and-a-half years ago and she has no idea where her father is.

    According to Station House Officer (SHO) Liaqatabad Uzma Khan, Karachi police is trying to trace her father by contacting their counterparts in Nawabshah.

    Recently, Osman Khalid Butt had a hilarious Twitter exchange with K-Electric and is something all citizens of Karachi will be able to relate to.

    It all started when Butt shaded KE at 5 am in the morning for not restoring electricity.

    KE responded with their usual reply to which Butt joked that given how many DMs have been exchanged they should just ask each other out at this point.

    Four hours later, electricity was still not restored.

    An hour later, Butt shared that K-Electric may take 15 more hours to restore electricity.

    “I may spontaneously combust with rage,” said the actor.

    Meanwhile, Butt’s followers including his colleagues really enjoyed his rant.

    Cop martyred in Pakistan Stock Exchange attack was to retire two days later

    One of the martyred security personnel who thwarted the attack on Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) in Karachi on Monday, was due to retire from service two days later, SAMAA reported.

    Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Muhammad Shahid of Lyari recruited 33 years ago in 1987, was due to retire on July 1.

    Senior police officials have paid tribute to the martyred officer. They say the city owes its peace to such valiant police personnel.

    Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan and Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa among others have also paid tribute to the brave cops and security guards who laid down their lives to foil the attack by killing all four gunmen affiliated with the banned Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) before they could enter the compound.

    Constable Muhammad Rafiq Soomro and Constable Khalil Jatoyi are also being praised for their valour and the critical role they played in thwarting the attack within eight minutes of its launch.

    Earlier, panic and fear swept across Karachi after four terrorists tried to storm the PSX building on I I Chundrigar Road Monday. The assailants came in a car and tried to enter the building, according to the police.

    They were intercepted by security guards after which the militants threw a hand grenade at them and opened gunfire. All four attackers were killed after a brief encounter with commandos of the Sindh Police’s Rapid Response Force.

    Police killed all four assailants who attacked the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) compound in Karachi on Monday morning, police chief Ghulam Nabi Memon confirmed to media.

    Citing Memon, Reuters reported that the gunmen had attacked the compound on I I Chundrigar Road with grenades and guns. “Four attackers have been killed, they had come in a Corolla car,” Nabi said.

    Initial reports said that four attackers entered the building around 10 am and opened fire. A grenade attack was carried out at the entrance.

    At least two civilians were killed in the attack and multiple were injured.

    Police surgeon Dr Qarar Ahmed Abbasi said that five bodies and seven injured including policemen were brought to Dr Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital in Karachi.

    Other reports said that four guards and a policeman were also martyred.

    Police and Rangers’ officials arrived at the scene soon after the attack and killed all four attackers, Sindh Rangers said.

    A clearance operation is underway in the vicinity. Weapons and hand grenades have been recovered from the attackers.

    “An unfortunate incident took place at the Pakistan Stock Exchange,” said PSX director Abid Ali Habib. “They made their way from our parking area and opened fire on everyone.”

    He said that the militants had stormed the Railway Ground parking area and fired outside the PSX ground. They made their way to the main gate of the building and stormed it after trading fire with security guards. 

    Habib said that the firing by militants caused panic among the people in the building.

    The PSX building and surrounding areas were sealed by law enforcement agencies. People inside the PSX building were evacuated from the back door.

    Police said the militants conducted the assault with sophisticated weapons and were carrying a bag filled with explosives. 

    Counter Terrorism Department’s (CTD) Raja Omar Khattab said that police would try to find out details about the car used by the attackers. “CCTV cameras are being monitored by law enforcement agencies to obtain clues.”

    An earlier statement by the PSX said that its compound had been attacked by militants and that the “situation is still unfolding”.

    “There was an attack on the PSX compound earlier today. The situation is still unfolding and management, with the help of security forces, is managing the security and controlling the situation,” tweeted the PSX.

    “We will issue a more detailed statement in due course once the situation is under control and more details are known,” it said in a subsequent tweet.

    For now firing has stopped and reinforcement are in place, it added.

    Meanwhile, Sindh Governor Imran Ismail condemned the attack.

    “Strongly condemn the attack on PSX aimed at tarnishing our relentless war on terror,” he said, vowing to protect Sindh at all costs.

    The banned Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), which was declared a global terrorist group by the United States (US) last year, has reportedly claimed responsibility for the attack.

    A 9-year-old boy stole a car from the Karachi’s Sea View area and drove it until it ran out of fuel. The Darakhshan police caught the boy but later released him with a warning and allowed him to go with his parents.

    As per reports, the child had stolen the car from Khayaban-e-Mujahid. His act was caught on the closed-circuit television (CCTV) and footage of the incident went viral on social media.

    The boy is the resident of Machar Colony. Police officials said that the minor boy liked driving and had stolen a few motorcycles in the past. They added that he would drive vehicles until the fuel ran out after which he leaves them where they stop.

    According to police, the little boy’s father is a drug addict. Police noted that they have warned the boy and let him go.

    Founder of ACF Animal Rescue shares harrowing story of animal abuse in Karachi

    The Ayesha Chundrigar Animal Rescue has filed a petition in the Sindh High Court against the mass killing of animals being conducted throughout Karachi and Sindh after their rehabilitated dogs were found dead. In an announcement, the foundation shared that the primary purpose of the petition is to ensure that Government Authorities draft a uniform policy on how to contain the population of dogs in the city.

    Prior to filing a petition, Ayesha, who is the founder of the animal shelter, shared an emotional video in which she shared that people were brutally killing dogs they had rehabilitated and released back on the streets.

    Explaining the rehabilitation process, Ayesha said that when strays or injured dogs come to the shelter, they are taken care of, vaccinated and neutered and when they recover completely there are released into far off areas, such as Malir, marked as safe zones. These areas have less human population and are away from the city. Ayesha explained that once they are released, members and volunteers of the shelter keep an eye on the dogs and make sure they are doing fine.

    Sharing a particularly harrowing incident, Ayesha said that her team found two of their dogs dead with their legs tied up. According to her, the dogs were given poison after which their legs were tied together so that they don’t run away for help. The wounds on their bodies indicated that they were also tortured and beaten.

    Ayesha added that she has no idea how to keep the remaining dogs safe. She said that this was not an isolated incident and dogs across the city are being killed and poisoned regularly. She said sometimes they are skinned and their meat taken. The activist further said that in such incidents, it is impossible to track the perpetrators and hold them accountable.

    “Where is our society going,” questioned Ayesha. “It seems all these DMCs want to literally drive us to suicide. They are well aware that we are in Malir yet instead of working with us as we have asked them to countless times, they do this.”

    “We can’t take it anymore. They win. We’ve fallen apart, trying like absolute fools in this lawless city of millions. Can’t do it anymore. We’re tired and hopeless and can’t keep looking for ways out,” she continued.
