  • Edhi shelter raided after girl allegedly dies of torture

Edhi shelter raided after girl allegedly dies of torture

A judicial magistrate along with the team of the Sindh Social Welfare Department raided an Edhi shelter home in Karachi’s Clifton Thursday after a girl allegedly died of torture there.

A woman in her complaint registered in the Clifton police station had stated that a girl was tortured to death by a teacher at the shelter home.

As per reports, SSWD (Sindh Social Welfare Department) officials took seven girls into protective custody during the raid. The statements of around 150 girls were documented in the presence of the judicial magistrate and seven of them complained that they were tortured. The girls were handed over to the Sindh Social Welfare Department.

Meanwhile, the Head of the Edhi Foundation Faisal Edhi rebutted the allegations and termed the case as baseless saying that the girl died a natural death because she was sick.

“It was a natural death that was why it wasn’t reported to the police”, he stated.

He said the complainant had been living in the shelter home since her childhood, adding that her brother wanted to take her home with him which is why “all these stories were being made up”.

Faisal further said that 150 girls were present inside the shelter home at the time of the raid and only seven of them agreed to leave, adding that the girls who were taken into protective custody had “liberal views”.

Karachi: World’s largest urban forest to be planted along Lyari river

Sindh Minister for Local Government and Forests Syed Nasir Hussain Shah has announced that Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) chief Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari will soon inaugurate the world’s largest urban forest that will be planted along the Lyari River in Karachi over an area of 26 kilometres.

According to The News, Shah, while speaking to journalists on Monday, vowed to ensure that only environment-friendly trees that bear fruits will be planted, and said the project had been initiated according to the vision of the PPP chairman.

The first phase of the project will be initiated at the bank of the Lyari River, while in the second phase, an urban forest will be planted along the Malir River, he added.

The minister directed the authorities concerned to make arrangements for setting up recreational facilities for citizens as part of the project and also ordered constructing small playgrounds for children as well as a jogging track.

He said that planting an urban forest along the rivers will turn the entire area into an attractive spot for local and foreign tourists. Shah added that such urban forests will also be planted in other parts of the city.

The minister said that apart from the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P), other political parties are also supporting the provincial government in the project and announced constructing football, boxing grounds as well as volleyball and basketball courts for children of the city so they can involve themselves in healthy activities.

Rs18 billion scam discovered in PAF housing society for martyrs

An accountability court in Karachi was on Wednesday informed of massive fraud in Fazaia Housing Scheme Karachi (FHSK) by two builders with the connivance of Pakistan Air Force (PAF) officials, cheating people of billions of rupees.

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) had arrested Tanveer Ahmed and Bilal Tanveer, said to be associated with Maxim Properties, for allegedly depriving the public of Rs18 billion through investments in the FHSK.

During the hearing, NAB told the court that the land was allocated to the heirs of martyrs, but only 30 units were allocated to their families out of the 8,400 planned housing units.

According to the NAB, the detained builders, in connivance with the PAF officials, collected Rs18.2bn under the heads of form fees, registration, open certificate, standard and luxury apartments, surcharge, transfer fees, overseas apartments, overseas transfer fee, bungalows, the surcharge, transfer and proceedings fee for the bungalows and direct deposits.

The suspects were produced in the court for a physical remand, which was extended by 14 days.
