VIDEO: Journalist, activist own ‘Mere Paas Tum Ho’ writer on-air over gender issues

Renowned playwright and writer behind the very popular TV serial ‘Mere Paas Tum Ho’, Khalilur Rehman Qamar has been owned by journalist Owais Tauheed and social activist Tahira Abdullah, who argued with Qamar over gender issues and accused him of relating a woman’s reticence, in his dramas, to her dress.

As per the details, Qamar, whose views from some TV and social media appearances have greatly irked a segment of the society, was invited for a show on SAMAA TV Sunday night. The other two panelists on Barrister Ehtisham’s show were Tauheed and Abdullah.

With the journalist and activist calling Qamar out for his portrayal of women, the writer strongly denied it, saying that he was not in favour of measuring a woman’s reticence from what she wore. Tauheed also raised the point that Qamar always portrayed women as oppressed and needy beings.

At this, the playwright remarked that Tauheed had not even seen the dramas written by him.

Speaking on the show, Abdullah said they were tired of listening to the taunts of “western culture” and “privilege”. She added that systematic hatred of women was taught in the society. Heated arguments also marred the discussion.

Meanwhile, Eshal also denied the rumours. In a video, she said, “There is no truth in rumours that are doing the rounds. I haven’t got married to anyone, I am very much single.”

“My relationship with Khalil ur Rehman Qamar is that of an actor and a director, nothing more than that,” she added.

Last two episodes of Meray Paas Tum Ho left: Hold on to your medicine, warns the writer

The episode ended without much of a bang, but the teaser for the next episode was the shocker. Two episodes left. Its time for the big reveal: Will Danish (Humayun Saeed) take back Mehwish (Ayeza Khan) or marry Hania (Hira Mani)?

The series has been anything but typical. But what is frustrating is that there are moments that are so problematic and anti-women.

The most recent episode of the drama shows Maham (Savera Nadeem) accepting Shahwar (Adnan Siddiqui) back into her life. He has to prove himself, as she removes him from his position in the company, but why is he forgiven for that ultimate sin that the writer, Khalil ur Rehman Qamar isn’t allowing a woman to be forgiven for?

Maham ‘forgives’ Shehwar but demotes him from his position in the company until he ‘deserves’ it again

The controversial writer is no stranger to backlash and seems like he doesn’t mind it much either. He has passed many controversial comments about women and recently made new ones and some revelations of the program.

The episode, airing on Saturday, January 11th on ARY Digital, is going to be longer and not ‘for the faint-hearted’. The writer warns that it’s a real tear-jerker and if someone is emotional, they should keep their medicines close by. He also says that ‘God might forgive sins, but love does not,’ when asked about the ending of the drama.

Roomi, Danish and Mehwish’s son also goes out on a limb and literally proposes to Hania and asks her to marry his father. What’s also stranger is how Roomi is allowed to go to her house on his own and do these crazy gestures but obviously, his role defines what his father will do.

Rumi proposing to Hania on his father’s behalf (his father doesn’t know he is doing this)

It will be disappointing if Danish doesn’t forgive Mehwish. Especially since Maham has taken Shehwar back in his life. But based on what the writer is saying about the end, Danish and Mehwish might not be ending up together.

Mehwish tears the shirt she was wearing when Danish found her returning back to Karachi with Shehwar

Mehwish is repenting. She buys her old apartment, where she lived with Danish and her son, she prays and cries and admits her mistakes, asking Danish to let her live with him, for their son’s sake. But all that might not be enough.

Osman Khalid Butt throws shade at Qamar for his misogynistic statements

Khalil ur Rehman Qamar and his directorial feature Kaaf Kangana may not have been a box-office success but the film and its maker has been dominating headlines for one reason or another.

First the film and its ‘interesting’ trailer, then Neelum Muneer’s bizarre item song, then DG ISPR Major General Asif Ghafoor defending the item song and lastly Qamar himself saying that women should rape men if they want equality.

Yup, our head is spinning as much yours is.

Nonetheless, Qamar’s statements stirred up a social media storm and everyone began to call him out for his misogynistic and outdated comments.

Osman Khalid Butt, who is touted to be one of the most ‘woke’ celebrities to exist in the Pakistan film industry also called out Khalil ur Rehman for his comments.

Usman Mukhtar called for a boycott on Qamar.

Armeena Khan also called out Qamar for his statements.

In an interview, the renowned screenwriter had said, “A few weeks ago, a feminist group had a conversation with me regarding equality. I asked them if they’ve ever heard about a gang of men kidnapping a woman? They assured me they have. I asked them then why don’t women do the same?”

“If you wish to strive for equality then kidnap men as well. Rob a bus, gang rape a man, so that I can understand what you [women] mean by equality.”

Qamar has several successful dramas to his credit including the current superhit Meray Paas Tum Ho.

Defending his ideas and “philosophy” around how he sees society, Qamar said that Meray Paas Tum Ho was “the story of several men, not just one”.

“I have come across multiple married couples who go through the same ordeal. I’ve observed when a married woman cheats, she doesn’t feel ashamed at all. The reason behind her not feeling guilty is because she has been backed by another man. When an unmarried woman cheats, she feels guilty.”
