    Pakistan nears finalisation of IMF loan agreement: Power Minister announces positive progress

    Power Minister of Pakistan, Khurram Dastgir, announced that the country is close to sealing a deal with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and that the agreement has been achieved on almost all the issues between the two sides.

    With a $350 billion economy, Pakistan is in need of a crucial installment of $1.1 billion from the IMF to avoid default. However, the IMF has identified a significant gap of approximately Rs900 billion, equivalent to 1 per cent of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), which has been a hindrance in reaching a staff-level agreement.

    Minister Dastgir reassured that the IMF has not demanded the government to cut its defense budget during his appearance on the Geo News program “Capital Talk” on Monday.

    The Minister stated that instead of cutting the defense budget, the IMF has asked the Energy Division to reduce its losses. The Fund has also emphasized the need for the government to reduce line losses in the northern, southern, and western regions of the country. The Minister emphasized that the IMF has made it clear to Pakistan that the country must establish its financial stability by increasing its tax revenues and reducing losses.

    He also mentioned that the international community is not displaying leniency towards Pakistan since the US withdrawal from Afghanistan. The Minister indicated that the country must take the necessary measures to align its financial position and meet the expectations of the IMF and the international community.

    Next army chief appointment after consultation with leaders of coalition parties, says Khurram Dastgir

    Federal Minister for Power Khurram Dastgir Khan has revealed that the appointment of the next chief of army staff (COAS) will be made by Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif after consulting leaders of the coalition parties. The consultation process will begin in September.

    “The new army chief will be appointed in November. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, after consulting with other coalition leaders, will decide on the army chief. This consultation will start in September,” said Dastgir.

    “This appointment is not only important for the safety and defence of Pakistan but also necessary for the transparency of the upcoming general elections in 2023,” added Dastgir.

    The new COAS appointment is to take place in November this year.

    Former Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on Accountability Brigadier (Retd) Musaddiq Abbasi said that all the pending cases of politicians would have been solved by December 2022. Abbasi was SAPM to Imran Khan.

    Speaking on Express News‘ political programme‘ Kal Tak‘ with anchorperson Javed Chaudhry, the former special assistant revealed that he was working to make amendments to the Code of Criminal Procedure (CRPC) 1898 so that all the cases could be streamlined. According to him, when he took over the office as SAPM, he discussed it with Khan and he agreed.

    Moreover, talking about pending cases of Nawaz Sharif and other politicians, he clarified that all the cases would have been decided either in their favour or against them.

    On the show, Abbasi who is also the former National Accountability Bureau (NAB) director-general, talked about the recent amendments to NAB law. He said that the bureau is almost closed. It is pertinent to mention that the incumbent government through the new amendments has limited the powers of NAB.

    Abbasi also termed the allegations by Energy Minister Khurram Dastgir’s revelations as baseless. Dastagir alleged that in November when a new army chief would have been appointed by Imran Khan, the new chief would have violated the Constitution and would have helped Imran Khan make false cases against his opponents in order to disqualify them.

    Earlier, Dastgir said, “This is based on information. Imran Khan and his followers would have stayed in power for 15 years. The entire Opposition would have been disqualified. He [Imran Khan] was of the point of view that he will remove everyone and will not spare anyone.”

    Replying to Dastagir, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Asad Umar said that he believes that Dastagir is lying but is still waiting for Director General (DG) Inter-Services Public Relations’ (ISPR) statement because these are very serious allegations and the military spokesperson should respond to them.

  • ‘Find those who opened fire on my house,’ PML-N’s Khurram Dastgir tells Punjab govt

    Unidentified suspects opened fire on the side gate of senior Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Khurram Dastgir’s house Sunday night, he revealed in a press conference on Tuesday, reports Geo News.

    He called the firing incident a “failure of [the] Punjab government to enforce law and order” in the province.

    “You could not find the kidnappers of the presiding officers in the Daska by-polls. At least find those who opened fire on my house,” Dastgir said.

     “The firing on my house was a conspiracy to harass the Opposition,” said Dastgir.

    Dastgir also said that women and children were present inside the house when the incident took place.

    He said that no action was taken, despite the administration being informed about it.
