    DC Panjgur killed in attack in Balochistan

    The Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Panjgur Zakir Baloch was assassinated by unknown armed men in the Mastung District of Balochistan on Monday.

    Zakir Baloch was travelling on the National Highway near the Khada-Kucha area along with two people, District Chairman Malik Jan and Ahmed Jan, towards Quetta when at least 15 armed people attacked the vehicle, Geo News reported.

    All three suffered bullet injuries, after which the DC and his friends were shifted to a nearby hospital. Zakir succumbed to his injuries; however, his friends were referred to Quetta Civil Hospital’s trauma centre for further treatment.

    In recent years, the security situation has been getting worse as foreign-funded militant organisations increase their foothold in the troubled province.

    Journalist Iftikhar Firdous posted on X, “The deputy commissioner of Panjgur has been killed by at least two dozen attackers opening firing at his vehicle; local said that militants had set up a checkpoint looking for government officials.”

    Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif strongly condemned the attack, expressing grief over the martyrdom of DC Zakir Baloch.

    Jemima Khan calls for unconditional ceasefire in Gaza

    Screenwriter and film maker Jemima Khan has called for an unconditional ceasefire in Gaza on Monday, citing the “unprecedented” number of children killed in Israeli airstrikes on the besieged strip.

    The ex-wife of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan took to X (formerly Twitter) and wrote:

    “The number of children being killed in Gaza is unprecedented.

    Fewer children were killed in Iraq in 14 years of war (2008- 2022) than in one single month in Gaza.

    The civilian death toll is significantly higher than in all the conflicts around the world during the C20th.

    Ceasefire now!”

    Jemima Khan, who is mother to two Muslim children from her marriage to Imran Khan, was heavily criticised at the beginning of the Israeli bombardment for what was perceived by her followers as an attempt to “both-sides” the war. Since then, she has steadily posted about the conflict, speaking out against Islamophobia and anti-Semitism.

    Another tweet posted yesterday said, “I really don’t like the terms, “pro- Israel” or “pro- Palestine,” as it infers the choice has to be binary. You can be pro- Israel’s right to exist in safety and pro- Palestinian freedom. Those two things are not only mutually inclusive; they are contingent upon one another.”

    This one, however, got her backlash for what followers said was an attempt to conflate the oppressor and the oppressed.

    According to the army’s media affairs division, security forces have killed two terrorists after they attacked a military convoy in Gwadar, Balochistan, early on Sunday.

    In a statement, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) stated that the terrorists attacked the convoy at 10 a.m. using hand grenades and small guns.

    “However, due to the efficient and swift response, two terrorists were sent to hell with no harm to any military or civil persons,” the statement said, with the military expressing its resolve to “thwart efforts of the enemies of peace and prosperity in the country”.

    One militant was killed and three others were hurt during the exchange of fire with security personnel, according to an earlier statement by the ISPR, which added that an operation was initiated in the region after reports of the presence of terrorists.

    On the other hand, according to China’s consulate in Karachi, there were Chinese workers in the attacked convoy.

    “A Chinese convoy from the Gwadar port project was hit by roadside bombs and gunfire on its way back to the port area from the Gwadar Airport,” it said in a statement on its website, adding that “no Chinese citizens were killed or injured”.

    A statement released by the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman and former President Asif Ali Zardari condemned the attack.

    At least 9 killed after avalanche hits Gilgit Baltistan’s Astore region

    At least 9 people were killed and 26 were injured in an avalanche in the Astore district of Gilgit Baltistan on Saturday.

    The accident occurred in the Shounter Top area of the district.

    Local police have confirmed the death toll while also expressing concerns that the number of victims could rise as rescue operations go on. Many individuals are still believed to be buried under the debris.

    Locals gathered to provide support and aid to those affected by the disaster.

    Chief Minister of Gilgit Baltistan Khalid Khurshid Khan expressed sorrow over the fatalities and has ordered complete rescue operations.

  • Bannu hostage situation: Forces kill the terrorists

    Security forces in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) have managed to free the hostages being held by Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) inside the Counter-Terrorism Department’s (CTD) compound in Bannu.

    Defence Minister Khawaja Asif confirmed that “all the terrorists” have been killed.

    During the operation, an exchange of fire left several security men injured.

    The defence minister said that a unit of the army’s Special Service Group (SSG) carried out the operation, in which 10-15 of its commandos were injured while two were martyred.

    Earlier in the day, an operation had been launched to free the hostages held by the militants.

    Hospitals in the vicinity have been put on high alert and mobile services have also been blocked in the area.

    What happened in Bannu?

    On Sunday, militants detained at a facility run by KP police’s CTD in on Sunday took over the department, held interrogators hostage and demanded safe evacuation to Afghanistan.

    After taking over, the militants shot at security personnel inside the facility, injuring a policeman and a soldier. The outlawed TTP claimed responsibility for the incident.

    According to news reports, the militants managed to break out of lockup and held security personnel hostage. After the incident, police and security forces rushed to the spot but failed to free the hostages.

    Barrister Muhammad Ali Saif, Special Assistant to KP Chief Minister, said that talks between Pakistani officials and the leadership of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) are underway in Afghanistan, however, there is no breakthrough as yet.

    He also confirmed that a security official was killed in the Bannu compound by the militants and said that the government had engaged the militants to avoid casualties.

    The area where CTD is located has been sealed and residents have been asked to stay indoors. Internet services have been suspended in the city.

    Moreover, roads leading to and from Bannu Cantonment have been blocked.

    A resident of Karachi, identified as Fawad, killed his wife and three daughters in Shamsi Society in Malir before attempting suicide. He is now admitted in a hospital where his condition is said to be critical.

    Local police have said that they found the bloodied remains of a woman aged 38 and three girls, 16, 12, and 10 in the house.

    According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sajid Sadozai, the man first killed his daughters then his wife with a sharp-edged tool as a knife has been recovered from the scene. He also added the incident was the result of an internal dispute within the family.

    “The suspect, a sales manager at a spice-selling company by profession, tried to commit suicide after killing his wife and daughters,” the police official said.

    The SSP said the house was locked from the inside after the murders, “which indicates the suspect was behind the killings”.

    When the incident happened, Fawad’s brother, whose family lives just one floor below Fawad’s, was at work and the neighbours were also unaware of the incident.

    2-year-old child, kidnapped, tortured, killed in Lahore

    A toddler, kidnapped from outside his house on Sunday, was found this morning, tortured and strangled to death, Samaa has reported.

    The tortured body of the two-and-a-half years old boy, named Zeeshan, was found near the Chohang area in Lahore. The child had gone missing while playing outside his house on Sunday evening.

    The family started a search for the boy and later found his body in a cemetery in the morning.

    However, the child’s family did not report their child missing to the police, and they instead carried on their own independent search for the minor.

    Initial investigations revealed that Zeeshan had been strangled to death, but a full investigation, autopsy, and forensic examination will determine the precise cause of death.

    Police are investigating the case.

    12-year-old girl killed after rape in Bahawalnagar

    A 12-year-old girl was murdered after the alleged rape in Manchinabad area of Punjab’s Bahawalnagar district, ARY News reported on Thursday.

    According to details, a 12-year-old girl was killed after being raped in Manchinabad. The police detained the two suspects in the case after it was reported.

    Taking notice of the incident, Punjab Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar has also asked for a report from IG Punjab and ordered strict action against the persons involved in the crime.

    CM Punjab Usman Buzdar also assured the victim’s family that justice will be served.

    Earlier, a girl in Gujrat died after three men allegedly kidnapped and gang-raped her. Three men abducted a girl from Chak Ghazi in Gujrat district on September 1. The accused gave a tranquilliser to the girl and then raped her.

  • At least 15 killed in fire at chemical factory in Karachi

    At least 15 workers of a chemical factory lost their lives after a fire broke out at a factory in Karachi’s Mehran Town on Friday, police and rescue officials told Dawn.

    Talking to Dawn, Korangi SSP Shah Jehan said that so far 15 bodies had been recovered from the factory.

    He said that the police had been informed that there were 25 people still stuck in the building, and feared that they may not have survived.

    According to a spokesman for the Pakistan Rangers (Sindh), the area had been cordoned off and Rangers officials were busy in relief efforts with rescue teams.

    The spokesperson said that the fire had started at a chemical factory in Mehran Town, adding that the fire was now under control and rescue efforts were underway.

    Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) Additional Police Surgeon Dr Summaiya Syed said that 13 bodies had been shifted to the hospital so far.

    According to police officials, an Edhi volunteer, Saddam, 30, also sustained injuries while trying to extinguish the fire. The injured were also rushed to JPMC.

    Meanwhile, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah took notice of the incident and ordered the Karachi commissioner and the labour department to make a report. “How did the incident occur and what safety precautions were being taken,” he questioned.
    He also directed officials to provide the best possible medical aid to the injured and support to the families of the deceased.

    Suspect involved in rape of a dead body killed in police encounter

    Police have killed a man accused of raping a dead body of a teenage girl in Thatta district, in an alleged encounter, ARY News reported.

    As per reports, the Sindh police had earlier detained accused Rafique Chandio for committing an abominable act.

    “Accused Rafique Chandio tried to escape from police detention. He opened fire at policemen at Babra Mori near Gharo, and was killed in the counter fire,” police said.

    SSP Thatta said that the encounter happened at Babra Mori. “This man had become a symbol of terror for the local people,” SSP said. “Some political people were exerting pressure on the family of the girl and police to avoid action against him,” SSP said.

    Special Assistant to CM Sindh Sadiq Memon on Saturday confirmed that the police has arrested the man who allegedly dug up a teenage girl’s dead body and sexually assaulted it.

    The 14-year-old girl’s body was taken out of her grave after it was buried at a local graveyard on Friday. The body was then raped.

    The man dumped the body in the bushes after sexually abusing it and ran away.
