KP girl becomes first woman PAF fighter pilot from province

Kainat Junaid has become the first woman from Khyber Pakthunkhwa (KP) to be selected for fighter pilot training in Pakistan Air Force (PAF), The Express Tribune reported Monday.

According to reports, hailing from Lower Dir’s Balambat area, Kainat not only secured the top position in PAF’s test for GD pilot, but also became Pakistan’s first female fighter pilot to serve the country alongside her father.

Kainat cleared her matric examinations by obtaining 1,030 marks from PAF College Badaber and aced her intermediate exams by obtaining 937 marks from Jinnah College, Peshawar.

Kainat’s father, Squadron Leader Ahmed Junaid, has said that his longstanding desire of watching his daughter become a fighter pilot has been fulfilled.

“I am so proud of my daughter… she is inspired by Marium Mukhtar, the first female pilot of PAF who sacrificed her life in the line of duty and embraced martyrdom,” he added.

Flying Officer Marium Mukhtiar was a PAF fighter pilot who lost her life after her PAF FT-7PG aircraft crashed near Kundian in Mianwali district on November 24, 2015.

  • VIDEO: ‘KP police raid salons, arrest people for getting beards trimmed’

A video of police raiding hair salons in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) has gone viral over the internet with the claim that the authorities are arresting and harassing people for getting their beards trimmed in a fashionable way.

The person who shared the video also claimed that police were charging the arrestees with heavy fines and that hairdressers, fearing arrest, had even started denying beard-trimming requests by their customers.

The alleged development comes after reports that the Frontier Provincial Hairdressers and the Beauticians Association have advised all hairdressers registered with the body to avoid cutting beards in a fashionable way.

They had also warned that violators would face heavy fines.

The KP Information Department had, however, denied having released any orders to restrain the so-called stylish beards and warned that strict action will be taken against people imposing such laws.

In historic first, two women contest ex-FATA election

Two women have stepped up to contest the provincial election being held in ex-Federally Administrated Tribal Areas (FATA) of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Geo News reported.

FATA was finally merged into KP in May 2018 after then president Mamnoon Hussain signed the 25th Constitutional Amendment Bill into law.

People of the tribal districts on Saturday are casting a ballot for the first time to elect members of the provincial assembly on sixteen seats up for grabs in seven newly-merged districts.

In the 16 constituencies up for grabs, almost all contestants are men; however, two women from the Awami National Party (ANP) and Jamaate Islami (JI) have stepped up to give them a tough time.

Naheed Afridi from the ANP is hoping for a win in Khyber district’s PK-106. There are a total of 148,470 voters in this constituency, of which 65,652 (44 per cent) are female.

JI’s Malasa Bibi, on the other hand, is running for PK-109 of the Kurram district. In her constituency, there are 187,844 voters in all, of which 82,560 are women.

The two women are breaking barriers by contesting the election in extremely conservative tribal districts where women have not always been allowed to even cast their votes.
