    Security forces kill seven terrorists in Tank Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

    On Wednesday, the military’s public relations branch announced that seven terrorists were killed by security forces in an intelligence-based operation (IBO) conducted in the Tank district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

    The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said that on the night between November 14-15, security forces conducted an IBO in the Kiri Machan Khel area of the district on the reported presence of terrorists.

    “During conduct of the operation, intense fire exchange took place between own troops and terrorists, as a result of which seven terrorists were sent to hell,” it added.
    ISPR stated that weapons and ammunition were seized from the eliminated militants.
    As per the ISPR, the militants have been consistently participating in various terrorist activities, notably the recent incidents of targeting and killing police in Tank and its neighboring regions.
    “Locals of the area appreciated the operation and extended their full support to the security forces in elimination of menace of terrorism,” the statement added.

    Taliban attack PPP leader’s house in Nowshera after asking for Rs1 crore extortion

    According to a report in The News, Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Pir Muhammad Aslam’s house was partially damaged after a hand grenade attack on Friday in Nowshera district’s Risalpur.  

    In a report registered at the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) police station, the PPP leader said that he had received a threatening letter from the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) on July 1.

    Aslam also told the police that the Taliban was demanding Rs1 Crore from him, mentioning the amount in the letter.

    The complainant had received phone calls from Afghanistan phone numbers to arrange money or face “dire consequences”.

    Pir Aslam also mentioned that he also received phone calls from Pakistani numbers, in which the Taliban threatened to eliminate his whole family if he did not arrange the money.

    This is not happening for the first time. Last year, in October, senior Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Minister Atif Khan also received a letter from the Taliban demanding Rs8 million as extortion.

    Former Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Parvez Khattak, launched a new party on Monday under the name of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Parliamentarians (PTI-P). Pervez Khattak said that he is distancing himself from “PTI [Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf] Chairman Imran Khan’s anti-country agenda,” ending his ties with the party in which he was once considered the most powerful member.

    Khattak claimed that 57 ex-assembly members and senior politicians of KP have joined his party, revealing that 20 more members will join the party soon.
    “Our existence is directly linked to that of Pakistan. The PTI is now completely finished in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa,” Khattak said. He alleged that his former political party lost three or more chances to win elections.

    “Why did PTI reject election opportunities three to four times? We had chances to hold elections. It is a big secret why PTI wasted the chance of going towards elections. Everyone will be shocked the day the secret is revealed about PTI’s plan,” he claimed.

    The Pakistan Democratic Movement-led government and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) finally sat together to discuss the matter of elections on Thursday.

    According to Geo News, the former ruling party PTI has put forward three conditions for reaching a consensus. One of them is that they want general elections in July instead of October.

    Other than this, PTI has asked the government to dissolve Balochistan and Sindh Assembly as well as National Assembly (NA) in May. Thirdly, the party wants an amendment in the constitution for simultaneous elections and for that, the resignations of their Member of National Assembly (MNA) have to be withdrawn.

    The first round of the negotiations lasted for two hours while the second round will be held today.

    It is important to mention that Supreme Cout (SC) gave May 14 as the date for polls in Punjab and KP, but later asked the political parties to negotiate with each other to reach a conclusion.

    Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan has admitted that he dissolved the provincial assemblies of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) on advice from former Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General (retd) Qamar Javed Bajwa.

    “In a meeting with General Bajwa held in the presence of President Dr Arif Alvi, he [Gen Bajwa] said that if you want elections, dissolve your governments,” said Khan while talking on ARY News programme, ‘Sawal Yeh Hai’.

    Khan had earlier made multiple accusations against the former army chief, including the allegation that he had conspired to remove PTI government at the center.

    The former prime minister further said, “General Bajwa and the [premier intelligence] agency knew that the current rulers had stolen the money from the national kitty and taken it abroad. Despite knowing this, General Bajwa was willing to give them NRO as he had planned an extension [for himself].”

    “If you have an ideology, you can’t convince yourself to give NRO to these people,” added Khan.

    He also revealed that a leader from the Middle East had told him a year ago that Bajwa was not supporting him any longer.

    Khan went on to say that they [coalition government] are running away from elections.

    During the interview, Imran Khan also suggested that polls can take place in July if Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif dissolves the National Assembly — the lower house of parliament.

    “Elections can be held in July if the prime minister dissolves the assembly,” the ousted premier said.

    He also stressed that caretaker governments in both Punjab and KP — the provinces where Khan’s party was in power before he decided to dissolve its two assemblies on January 14 and 18, respectively — are illegal after the lapse of their stipulated term.

    “The caretaker government’s tenure is over already, it has become illegal,” the deposed premier said. He demanded the caretaker government be abolished and a new “neutral” interim setup be instated.

    He added that the Supreme Court of Pakistan has given May 14 as the date for Punjab polls and his party won’t let the government extend polling day beyond that.

    “If they think they [incumbent government] will pressurise the Supreme Court, we will not let it happen. They will create scandals about the top court to run away from elections,” he said.

    The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has announced on Friday that official holidays on the occasion of Eid ul Fitr will be six days long.

    According to the notification issued by KP government, Eid holidays will start from April 21 and will conclude on April 26.

    The Federal and Punjab governments have announced a five-day holiday for Eid.

    The Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee is set to meet on April 20 for sighting of the Eid ul Fitr crescent moon, a statement from the religious affairs ministry said on Tuesday.

    This year, the holy month of Ramazan started on March 23.

    PPP wants to talk to PTI while PML-N and JUI-F oppose idea

    Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) is reportedly ready to hold talks with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) while Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Fazl (JUI-F) have rejected the idea.

    Stressing the importance of resolving conflicting court verdicts promptly and without impinging on the judiciary’s honour and prestige, PPP, in the interest of fair and free elections, called for general elections for all assemblies to be held on the same day.

    JUI-F leader Asad Mahmood, in a statement on Friday, said that no negotiations will take place with Imran Khan and called for imposing Article 6 on him. Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah on multiple occasions has also rejected the idea of holding talks with the PTI.

    On the contrary, it seems like the former ruling party is ready to talk, albeit only on the matter of elections.

    Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Senior Vice President Fawad Chaudhry said that the “ideal” situation to deal with the crisis surrounding Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) elections is for the ruling parties, establishment, and the PTI to hold a meeting together. 

    “The parties will have to sit together and bring a constitutional amendment with consensus to conduct elections at one time,” said Fawad.

    PTI’s Ali Amin Gandapur arrested from DI Khan

    Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leader (PTI) Ali Amin Gandapur has been arrested by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Police outside the Dera Ismael Khan (DI Khan) bench of the bench of the Peshawar High Court (PHC) on Thursday night.

    Gandapur was arrested in a case relating to an audio recording of him purportedly threatening authorities and the police against the possible arrest of party Chairman Imran Khan.

    In the audio, the Gandapur reportedly threatened to siege Islamabad if the former prime minister is arrested.

    Khan condemning the arrest, tweeted, “Today complete law of the jungle prevails in Pak[istan]. PDM & handlers have a one point agenda – that is to go after PTI workers & leadership.”

    “It was decided preemptively to arrest Ali Amin Gandapur despite bails. But they will still be decimated in the elections InshaAllah,” said Khan.

    Khan also shared a video in which Gandapur’s lawyer can be heard saying that the district police officer (DPO) told the sessions judge that they had to arrest the PTI leader “no matter what the cost”.

    Urgent cabinet meeting called ahead of SC verdict on election in Punjab, KP

    The federal cabinet has been summoned for an emergency meeting for the second time in less than 24 hours today.

    The meeting, scheduled for 1pm today at Parliament House, comes after the upcoming announcement of the Supreme Court’s verdict in the Punjab and KP elections delay case.

    This will be the second cabinet meeting in a row, following a previous one held on Monday at 8pm.

    During the meeting, the federal cabinet made the decision to withdraw the services of SC Registrar Ishrat Ali, following a letter by Justice Qazi Faez Isa seeking to remove him from office by the cabinet division.

    The Supreme Court has reserved its decision over Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) elections and will announce the decision tomorrow (Tuesday).

    The hearing of the case has been going on for the past week with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) demanding immediate elections.

    On February 22, Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Umar Ata Bandial took a suo motu notice of the delay in elections, forming a larger bench to hear the case but later many top judges excused themselves from the hearing.

    Today, the hearing was headed by a three-judge bench comprising Justice Munib Akhtar, Justice Ijaz ul Ahsan and Bandial.

    Attorney General for Pakistan (AGP) Mansoor Awan, Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) lawyers Irfan Qadir and Sajeel Swati, PTI lawyer Ali Zafar, and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) counsel Farooq H. Naek were present in the courtroom.

    At the outset of the hearing, Naek came to the rostrum. Justice Bandial asked the lawyer if PPP had ended its boycott against the court hearing to which the latter replied that he had not boycotted the proceedings.

    Naek replied in the affirmative and said that “we never boycotted the hearing”.

    At one point during the hearing, the CJP noted that harmony among judges was crucial for the Supreme Court. He observed that while judicial proceedings were made public, consultations among judges were considered internal matters.
