    ‘Crime is part of life’; Astonishing statement by Sindh home minister

    Sindh Home Minister Zia ul Hasan Lanjar has said that Karachi’s law and order situation is being “exaggerated”. In a press briefing held on Sunday, he said “Street crime exists in Karachi, however, it has been exaggerated in media.”

    On March 13, the provincial cabinet was informed that nearly 16,000 street crimes had been recorded in Karachi since January 2024. He termed street crime as “part of daily life.” Since January, 49 citizens have been killed resisting street crimes.

    The Minister showed sympathy with the families of those who lost their lives, stating that measures were being taken to end the wave in Karachi, including action against the station house officer (SHO) where crime would occur.

    Furthermore, he said that around 1,000 policemen would be sent to Kashmore District for an operation against the criminals in that area.

    The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) is set to conduct a crucial meeting today, focusing on the worsening state of law and order in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Balochistan, as general elections are set to take place on February 8, The News reported on Thursday.

    In the past few weeks, there has been a significant increase in attacks on political rallies, camp offices, and candidates, as well as terror incidents, especially in the two restive provinces.

    The ECP directed KP’s chief secretary and inspector general of police to submit a detailed report on the murder of independent candidate, Rehan Zeb Khan, contesting for the National Assembly (NA) seat from NA-8 Bajur.

    The unidentified persons gunned down the young political activist on Wednesday in his hometown while he was canvassing for votes.

    An ECP notification stated that “The scheduled meeting in Islamabad on Thursday at 3pm will be attended by the minister and secretary of interior, chief secretaries, inspectors general of KP and Balochistan, and officials from intelligence agencies.”

    ECP also asked for an immediate report from the Balochistan chief secretary and inspector general of police on the bomb attack at a political party’s election office.

    Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) business community has expressed their concerns regarding the unfavorable law and order conditions, threatening a potential shutdown of industrial operations.

    Malik Imran Ishaq, President of Hayyatabad Industrial State, highlighted the persistent issue of extortion demands faced by industrialists. He further stated that unidentified individuals resort to grenade attacks on residences and offices when businessmen fail to comply with the extortion demands.

    In light of these circumstances, the president of the KP industrialists association has urged the government to ensure adequate security measures, emphasising that failure to do so would force them to halt their industrial activities.

    The deteriorating law and order situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province has become a cause for concern among businessmen and residents alike.

    As per available records, a total of 411 incidents were reported in the province in the year 2022, out of which 342 cases were filed in relation to extortion.

    Additionally, the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) registered First Information Reports (FIRs) for 69 extortion incidents and successfully apprehended 173 individuals involved in extortion activities during the same year.

    Two suspected robbers were reportedly shot to death on Saturday in the Azizabad Block 8 area of Karachi after a citizen allegedly fired at them while they were attempting to rob him near Moore Park, as per eyewitnesses, Samaa has reported.

    The police arrived at the scene and took possession of the bodies, which were then transferred to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. The suspected robbers were pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.

    Authorities have stated that they are working to establish the identity of the alleged thieves. It remains unclear whether the citizen who fired the shots acted in self-defense or if there are other factors at play.

    PPP Sindh MPA, two others acquitted in Nazim Jokhio case after out-of-court settlement

    A local court on Thursday acquitted three people including Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Member of Sindh Assembly Jam Owais in the Nazim Jokhio murder case.

    The Additional District and Sessions court Malir announced the verdict on the applications of reconciliation between the victim’s family and the accused.

    Jam Owais and other two persons appeared in the court. The court accepted the reconciliation petition of Jam Owais, Meraj Jokhio and Ahmed Khan. The court rejected the petition of two accused for reconciliation.

    On November 3 last year, Nazim’s tortured body was found in Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Member of Provincial Assembly (MPA) Jam Awais’ farmhouse in Karachi’s Malir area, a day after he filmed a group of foreigners hunting the endangered houbara bustard in Achar Salaar village in Thatta.

    According to Jokhio’s brother, Nazim had broadcast a live stream on social media of a hunting expedition involving foreign guests of PPP MPA Jam Awais, after which Jam Awais called Nazim to the house where he was allegedly murdered.

    A nine-year-old child was murdered by his uncle after a quarrel with his mother in Mandi Bahauddin City of Punjab, reports ARY.

    The police said that the accused dumped the child’s dead body in a canal after the gruesome incident. According to police, the accused had a quarrel with mother of the minor child and after he murdered the minor to avenge on his mother.

    The police officials informed that the minor went missing from his home on Sunday evening. However, his dead body was recovered from a canal after the accused was arrested on suspicion.

    Earlier, this month a man in Lahore killed a first-year student for refusing to marry him. After killing the victim, the man named Bilal shot at and injured himself.

    According to the police, the deceased’s body has been transported to a hospital for a post-mortem examination.

    Three men attacked Assistant Commissioner Marvi Malik Sher near Ghazi Kot in Mansehra last week. The hooligans also attempted to assault the assistant commissioner by pulling her out of her vehicle, injuring both her and the guard. Some onlookers rescued them and handed the three men over to the police.

    Zoha Malik, sister of Marvi Malik, has alleged that her sister was attacked because of her gender. “Some ruffians tried to attack my sister Marvi Malik Sher last evening for being a female officer. It’s the 21st century and women in leadership posts are still an anomaly to sick and prejudiced, patriarchy-ridden mindsets in our country,” Zoha Malik wrote in a tweet.

    Marvi Malik is one of five sisters who have set a record for passing the CSS exam and joining the bureaucracy.

    Justice Ayesha Malik takes oath, becomes first woman to be SC Judge

    Justice Ayesha Malik has taken oath as the Judge of Supreme Court of Pakistan. With her appointment, she has become the first woman of the country to reach the apex court.

    Her swearing-in ceremony was held at the apex court today. Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Gulzar Ahmed administered the oath to her.

     Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Vice-President Maryam Nawaz has lauded Ayesha Malik’s appointment.

    Senator Shibli Faraz has termed her appointment as the “historic moment” in the judicial history of Pakistan.

    President Arif Alvi on Friday gave final approval of her elevation. The Judicial Commission of Pakistan had on January 7 approved the elevation with a vote of five for and four against after a heated discussion on whether judges should be appointed based on merit or seniority.

  • Shot fired at Khadija’s house, days after her attacker was set free

    A bullet was fired at Lawyer Khadija Siddiqi’s house on Saturday night at 7pm, Khadija has tweeted that the bullet was fired through her car.

    “Today around 7pm a bullet was fired through my car’s bonnet which was parked inside the house. I was alone in the house,” she wrote in a tweet.

    “I consider this a clear threat to me and my family,” while tagging Prime Minister Imran Khan in her tweet.

    Khadija also shared a picture of her car.

    It is pertinent to mention here that Shah Hussain, who stabbed Khadija 23 times in 2016 was released on “technical remissions”, on July 17, 2021.

    After the release of Hussain, Khadija while speaking on Geo News programme ‘Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Sath’ stated that she wrote to CCPO Lahore asking for security because her life is in danger. She said that her attacker, Shah Hussain, will be out of jail. The police did not respond to her request.

    Therapy works has denied allegations that Zahir Jaffer, the alleged killer of Noor Mukadam, was seeing clients at the Therapy Works office. Samaa News has reported that a woman has came forward with details contradicting their claims.

    She shared screenshots with Samaa Digital that in 2019, she had taken someone to Therapy Works to receive therapy from Zahir Jaffer. She also shared a screenshot of conversation she had with Zahir to book an appointment.

    According to a statement released by Therapy Works, “Zahir Jaffer was enrolled as a student in UK Level 3 from September 2015 to September 2016. After this he joined UK Level 4 from October 2016 to June 2018. He did not complete his coursework and International Essays, and accordingly was never given permission to see clients,” said the statement. But the woman’s screenshot and claim shows otherwise.

    TherapyWorks statement on their official Instagram handle

    As per Samaa, “Therapy Works had posted on its Instagram a picture of its UK Level 5 candidates and the group included Zahir Jaffer. They have deleted the picture now, but social media users took a screenshot of it.”

    While Therapy Works has responded to the allegation that Zahir was a practicing therapist, The Current reached out to them asking for a response to the allegations that they were involved in the incident. We are still waiting for a response.
