Petition filed in Karachi court over city’s fly infestation

Karachiites are worried about fly’s infestation in the city and a person approached the Sindh High Court to make sure that the authorities do something to address the problem.

Swarms of flies have occupied Karachi after the recent monsoon
rains during Eidul Azha. The city’s situation worsened because streets and
roads were flooded, mounds of garbage continued to pile up, and animal waste
    wasn’t disposed of properly.

A petition was filed on Tuesday. The Sindh
government, Karachi mayor, and chairmen of all six districts have not been
responsible in cleaning the city. People have to brush off flies from
everything and it has made everyone’s lives quite difficult, the petition reads.

The petitioner even claims that diseases such as
dengue and Congo viruses have become common because the administration doesn’t
have a proper garbage disposal system. The situation will get worse if nothing
is done. The court should order the Sindh government and city government
to clean the city, it adds.

Ever wondered how world leaders treat each other?

Well, we recently got a glimpse of Russia’s ‘Ice-cream Diplomacy’ when Russian President Vladimir Putin bought Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan an ice-cream cone at the Moscow International Aviation and Space Salon (MAKS 2019). How cool.

After getting the ice-cream, Erdogan asked Putin: “Will you pay for me too?”

To which the Russian President responded: “Yes, of course I’ll pay. After all, you are our guest.”

President Putin then paid 210 rubles ($3.20) for the ice-cream. He gave the ice-cream vendor a 5,000 ruble note and told his minister Denis Manturov to keep the change!

  • 4 reasons we make bad decisions and what to do about them

4 reasons we make bad decisions and what to do about them

Decision making is a tough job and we sometimes end up making bad decisions. Here are four reasons we make bad decisions and how we can counter them.

    Decision
    fatigue

We make a lot of little and big decisions on an everyday basis, which means we can get tired of making them. Even the most energetic people don’t have endless mental energy to take all decisions perfectly.

To counter it, identify the most important decisions you need to make, and, as often as possible, prioritize your time so that you make them when your energy levels are highest.

    Multi-tasking

There aren’t many jobs left in the world today that don’t need at least some multi-tasking. While that’s the reality, research shows that performance, including decision-making, suffers by up to 40% when we focus on two tasks at the same time.

What you can do is that when you need to make an important decision(s), carve out some time during the day to completely focus on it and then make a decision.

    Emotions

Experiencing frustration, excitement, anger, joy, etc., are the basic part of the daily human experience. And while these emotions have a meaningful role in our lives and they hinder our ability to make good decisions especially during moments of peak anger and happiness.

To counter this, pay attention to your emotional state and resist the temptation to respond to people or make decisions while you’re emotionally upset. Practice walking away from the computer or putting the phone down, and return to the task when you’re calm.

    Analysis paralysis

The more information we have to consider, the longer we normally take to make a decision. While the decision-making process should be thorough, the best way to make good decisions is usually not to take more time or to look at more information. Instead, review the relevant and important information you need, set a deadline to make a decision, and then stick to it.

  • Five tricks to get rid of flies

Five tricks to get rid of flies

Flies are not only annoying, but they are also major carriers of the disease. Shaniera Akram is also worried about flies infestation.

Here are five ways that can help you keep flies away.

    Lemon Stuffed with Cloves

This technique works well for both indoor and outdoor situations. All that needs to be done for this method, is to place whole cloves in a half lemon and put in as many of the cloves as you can fit into the lemon. Place the lemon in a bowl, and let it do its job.

    Apple Cider
    Vinegar Trap

Whether the fly problem you’re dealing with is indoors or outdoors, this simple and easy to make flytrap is one of the most effective methods. Simply get a bowl and fill it three-quarters with the apple cider vinegar and add in a drop of dish soap. The dish soap allows the liquid in the bowl to have a more firm surface that causes the flies to fall into the vinegar. Just be sure to remove all other stuff from the table that there isn’t any distraction away from the bowl.

    Lemongrass Oil
    Repellent

Flies hate the smell of lemongrass. All you have to do is heat up about a half cup of water and add in about 20 to 25 drops of pure lemongrass oil. Put it all in a spray bottle and spray all of your doors, windows, and infested surfaces. Not only does this mixture repel flies but it will also make your home smell good.

    Slices of
    Cucumber

    Flies also hate
the smell of cucumbers, so one of the best and easiest ways to deter them from
laying eggs in your garbage is to put slices of cucumbers right on top of  the bin. This will discourage them from going
anywhere near the trash, which can be especially helpful during these hot
summer days. In addition to that, placing cucumbers around all areas will keep
them away before they even have a chance to discover the places they might want
    to lay their eggs.

    Plastic Water
    Bags

    This fly
remedy is a very easy one to get set up, as all it takes is clear plastic bags
and some water. Fill each bag with water about three-quarters of the way and
tie a knot at the top to hang in your doorways around your house. When flies
come along, they don’t see bags of water but what appears to be a spider web or
something that disorients them.  This is a popular method for many outdoor
produce vendors to use, so it will surely work in your kitchen, terrace or in
    your garden.

You’ll be surprised to know who’s a fan of the Butterfly

The Diary of a Social Butterfly, a regular feature in The Friday Times, by Moni Mohsin gives us the comic relief we so often need. The Butterfly was such a smashing hit that Moni wrote three books – The Diary of a Social Butterfly, Tender Hooks and The Return of the Butterfly – on her adventures.

While all of us here in Pakistan are big fans of the character and the books, it turns out that the Butterfly is winning hearts across the border as well. Wonder what she has to say on that.

Former Bollywood actor and author Twinkle Khanna is a fan of Moni Mohsin’s Tender Hooks and she took to social media to praise the book.

Twinkle herself has authored three bestsellers: Mrs Funnybones, The Legend Of Lakshmi Prasad and Pyjamas Are Forgiving.
