Indian extremists angered by lions named ‘Akbar’ and ‘Sita’

Hindutva extremism has penetrated into every aspect of Indian life, including zoos.

Extremist organisation, Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), has filed a case against keeping a lion named Akbar and another named Sita in the same cage in West Bengal.

The lions brought to the West Bengal Safari Park were named by the management.

The Hindu organisation says that the authorities have hurt their religious sentiments by the two animals being housed together because they have names coming from different religions.

The VHP has filed a petition against the forest department in the Kolkata High Court, which will be heard on February 20.

Bilawal urges people to vote for “arrow” if they want to stop lion

Just days before the February 8 general elections, Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari launched criticism at all opposing political parties as election campaigning reached its peak.

While addressing an election rally in Hyderabad, Bilawal asked his audience to vote for arrow, the symbol of the PPP, if they want to block the lion, the symbol of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

Stressing the need for hard work, the ex-foreign minister asked the participants, “You just get PPP to win [elections]. I will handle this lion.”

The PPP chairman also criticised the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P). “If people ask you to vote for ‘kite’, then tell them, ‘We will not vote for those who raise anti-Pakistan slogans.’”

Reply that the kite will be ripped apart, he added. The PPP leader urged the people not to waste their vote on any independent candidate — an apparent reference to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-backed candidates.

PTI candidates are taking part in the upcoming general elections as independent candidates after the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) didn’t allot them their election symbol (bat).

Two kangaroos die at Lahore zoo

A male and a female kangaroo died in Lahore Zoo on Thursday.

As per reports, the male kangaroo died after suffering from a jaw infection while the female kangaroo was unwell for a long time.

Both were provided medical assistance but couldn’t survive, the  officials said.

Now13 adult kangaroos and three baby kangaroos are left at Lahore Zoo.

Earlier, a lion died of ‘cardiac arrest’ in Karachi Zoo. The director of the zoo said the lion died because of its old age and that the average lifespan of a lion is 18 years normally.

The Wild Life Department of Sindh with the help of District East officials captured the two lions in 2017 because they were transported into the city illegally. One of the two had died the later year of their fostering in the zoo, due to old age as well, the director claimed.

According to the post-mortem report of the deceased lion, the cause of death was the cardiac arrest due to heavy fat deposits on its heart.

“Usama has escaped along with the lion,” the officer added.

According to wildlife conservator Javed Mahar, the case has been taken up by the Sindh Wildlife Department. An inquiry is in progress and legal action will be taken.

Man caught torturing lion cub on camera

A man has been caught beating a lion cub on camera. In a video that is being widely circulated on social media, the man named Saad can be seen beating the young cub while dragging him with a chain. The cub’s heartwrenching cries can also be heard in the video.

The video sparked outrage on social media with several prominent personalities including Fatima Bhutto demanding the cub be rescued by authorities. Lahore-based JFK Animal Rescue And Shelter has also urged the government to stop licensing wild animals to individuals privately, saying that every third person in Pakistan now owns a lion as a pet.

The animal rescue service also initiated an online petition for this purpose and urged people to raise their voices for these animals. According to JFK, by owning a licence in Pakistan you can buy, sell or import lions and tigers and do whatever you want to do to them. In the recent past, multiple cases of animal abuse and violation have been reported.

The animal rights organisation also explained that lion and tiger owners, declaw them, beat them, cage them, take their teeth out and later use them for breeding where they open entire breeding farms and then sell the cubs for money.

“Once anybody gets the license there is no check and balance, and every other person is allowed to do all sorts of evil things to these wild animals behind closed walls. Many also torture them for TikTok and social media videos,” reads the petition.

“Many times lions are used as props and kept as slaves. People deprive them of their natural habitats and give them a miserable life. We have seen multiple cases of this abuse in a single year and now we want to deal with the root cause which is these licences, these licenses should be cancelled and there should be a complete ban on owning wild animals as pets,” it adds.

Fatima Bhutto also requested her followers to sign the petition and urged the government to rescue such wild animals from captivity.

Meanwhile, lawyers Ahmad Pansota and Hassaan Khan Niazi have taken up the case and have promised to file a petition before the court on the matter.

‘Save The Wild’ also urged the Punjab Wildlife and Parks Department to intervene and recuse the animal.

“Look at this poor cub sedated and being used as a prop. Rescue him please,” said the account.

This is not the first time a lion has been spotted at a PML-N rally. Earlier in 2018, a few months before the 2018 General Elections, members of the party brought a lion in a cage to the rally venue in Haripur where Nawaz Sharif addressed his supporters.

However, for today’s jalsa in Lahore, the PML-N has advised their supporters against bringing any animal. The spokesperson said that it is against the law and the party workers should not do any such thing.
