Maryam Nawaz responds to criticism over overseas surgery

Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Maryam Nawaz responded to widespread criticism on Wednesday about why she went abroad for her surgery instead of having it done in Pakistan.

Nawaz, speaking to party workers in London, clarified that she had to undergo parathyroid surgery, which cannot be done in Pakistan, noting that “only Switzerland and America have the technology for this particular surgery.”

Responding to rumours about her health, she denied having throat “cancer”.

She stated, while addressing Punjab’s smog crisis, that the smog had developed over the past seven to eight years, and its effects can not be mitigated overnight, noting, “The Punjab government is using AI technology to trace smoke-emitting vehicles.”

Maryam Nawaz’s remarks came after she was strongly criticised by politicians and activists, who pointed out that her province was grappling with a severe smog crisis while she was enjoying fresh air in Switzerland.

Lahore is consistently ranked as the worst city in the world in terms of air quality index, according to the Swiss air quality monitor IQAir.

The US Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Air Quality Index (AQI) revealed that a value of 50 or below indicates good air quality, while a value above 300 signals hazardous air quality.

The air quality index in Punjab’s capital has exceeded 1000 a number of times this year alone.

  • Maryam Nawaz comes under fire for wearing fur coat while Punjab goes through smog crisis

Maryam Nawaz comes under fire for wearing fur coat while Punjab goes through smog crisis

Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif has come under fire on social media for wearing what appears to be a luxurious fur coat in London while addressing Punjab’s smog crisis on November 12.

The optics for the Punjab’s Chief Minister aren’t good as the citizens of the province, and in particular Lahore, go through one of the worst climate catastrophes in history.

A dark haze has engulfed Punjab’s major cities, including Lahore and Multan, with poor visibility. Furthermore, traffic on the motorway is also suspended due to the smog crisis.

Nasa’s satellite images show both Lahore and New Delhi shrouded in thick smog with no green cover.

Netizens criticised the timing of Mayam’s visit overseas as her province is experiencing a crisis. CM Punjab, while talking to reporters, stated, “We are taking action against smog and will eliminate this smog in a few years. I am so sorry for the fact that this problem has been pushed to such an extent because they [previous government] had no concern for such a serious issue.”

Netizens on X (formerly Twitter) couldn’t help but notice the fur coat Maryam Nawaz had adorned with one user writing, “Inflation is ending in Punjab – Maryam Nawaz. The fur coat is currently worth 24,000 dollars to 71,000 dollars, the price of glasses is 1,140 dollars, Hermes Birkini bags are 60,000 dollars, making fun of Pakistanis.”

Another social media user criticised Maryam’s presence abroad, writing, “Smog will be fixed in a few years, says Maryam Nawaz while cosplaying as Sicilian Mafia donned with “fox fur” breathing fresh air in london as Form-47 CM of Punjab where Millions suffer with persistent Respiratory diseases, flu, cough, headache etc.”

One user wrote, “Maryam Nawaz’s most recent public appearance shows that the govt is not taking this issue seriously. So many ppl in this country could fix this issue and advise our politicians on optics. From jokes being made to moving to Karachi, to fur lapels and blaming old cars. We’re doomed.”

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Bilawal Bhutto Zardari took to X to post a screenshot of Air Quality Indexes of different cities with Karachi having a relatively better score. Bhutto wrote, “Dear Pakistan, move to Karachi. ”

Interestingly enough, this isn’t the first time Maryam Nawaz has come under criticism from the public for wearing expensive items. In 2022, when Pakistan was hit with devastating floods, Maryam Nawaz was seen wearing a fur coat (Ermanno Scervino) worth $4,648 (Rs1,029,789.5 including duties & handling fees included), according to News 360.

Govt blocks passports of 23 individuals involved in attack on Qazi Faez Isa

The Pakistani passports of 23 persons allegedly involved in the attack on former Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa have been blocked.

Appearing on Geo, journalist Asif Bashir Chaudhry claimed that 23 Pakistanis had been traced through the help of CCTV footage, including former Member of the National Assembly (MNA) Maleeka Ali Bokhari, who was involved in the alleged attack on ex-CJP Qazi Faiz Isa.

The passports were blocked following strong reactions from Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi last month, who had vowed to take stern action against the assaulters in London.

Shayan Ali, a famous Tik Toker known for spearheading PTI protests in London and often seen outside the residence of Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif, has also been nominated in the Passport Control List (PCL).

Sadia Faheem, Faheem Gulzar, Maheen Faisal, Sadra Tariq, Habba Tariq, Waqas Chohan, Mohsin Haider, Zameer Akram, Sardar Taimoor, Mohammad Pervez Ali, Rukhsana Kausar, Sheikh Mohammad Jameel, Mehran Habib, Zaheer Ahmad, Rehman Anwar, Mohammad Sadiq Khan, Khadija Kashif, Mohammad Naveed Afzal, Shehzad Qureshi, Suleman Ali Shah, and Bilal Anwar, are among those whose passports have also been revoked.

Asif Bashir Chaudhry further revealed: “The 23 names involved in the attack on ex-CJP Qazi Faez Isa are not dual nationals except two.”

Citing Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Cyber Crime case no 3,906/2024 against 23 Pakistanis, Chaudhry stated: “As soon as these suspects land in Pakistan legally, they will be arrested instantly.”

FIA included 153 other names on the list, which reportedly are dual nationals, a journalist said.

In October, dozens of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf followers and party leaders, including Sayed Zulfi Bukhari, Sahibzada Jahangir and former MNA Maleeka Bokhari, had protested against former CJP Qazi Faez Isa on his arrival for dinner at Middle Temple in London.

Outside the entrance gate of London’s Middle Temple, PTI followers had chanted, “Go Qazi, Go Qazi.”

Interior Minister on October 30 condemned the attack and ordered the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) to block the ID card of those involved in the attack on the Pakistani ambassador in which former CJP Qazi Faez Isa was present.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the Interior Ministry wrote, “We cannot remain silent on this incident,” and questioned why there was no security given to the Qazi Faez Isa amid threats.

Diljit expressed his admiration for Hania Aamir, calling her a superstar.

He affectionately insisted when Hania initially refused to come up on stage, saying in Punjabi, “When a superstar is among us, and she’s just standing in the audience, it cannot happen that she doesn’t come on stage.”

After much encouragement and loud cheers from the singer and the audience, Hania Aamir finally came on stage, where Diljit performed a few lines of his famous song ‘Lover’ for her.

From Hania’s facial expressions, it was clear that this was a fan moment for her, and she was at a loss for words to express her feelings.

She sincerely thanked the Indian singer for the gesture.

  • Taylor Swift got police escort to London gigs after Austria terror plot

Taylor Swift got police escort to London gigs after Austria terror plot

US star Taylor Swift got a special police escort for her London concerts after an alleged suicide attack plot led to the cancellation of three performances in Vienna.

Culture Minister Lisa Nandy denied the singer was given preferential treatment, after reports she had a motorbike escort usually reserved for senior members of the royal family and politicians.

Her denial comes with the new Labour government under attack for accepting free gifts, including Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who was given six tickets to the Swift concert.

Starmer, who attended the concert with his wife Victoria, announced last week that he had repaid thousands of pounds worth of gifts including the concert tickets.

But Nandy said the police escort, first reported by The Sun newspaper, was not the result of pressure from senior politicians.

“I utterly reject that there’s been any kind of wrongdoing or undue influence in this case,” she told Sky News television.

The interior minister, Yvette Cooper, would not have insisted “any individual got the top level of private security arrangements. That is an operational matter for the police, not for the government,” she said.

Other Labour politicians who enjoyed free tickets for the “Eras” tour shows included Education Minister Bridget Phillipson, London Mayor Sadiq Khan and Nandy herself.

The Swift tour wrapped up its European leg in August in London following dates across a dozen countries.

The last month of the Europe tour, however, was marred by the thwarted Austria attack, with authorities there revealing that an Islamic State sympathiser was planning a deadly attack at a concert in Vienna.

Three suspects were detained and all three August concert dates in Vienna were cancelled after an investigation conducted with the help of US intelligence.

According to The Sun report, Swift’s mother and manager threatened to axe the London shows in August unless she received the police escort.

It alleged that the Met Police agreed after “personal interventions from Cooper and Khan”, stressing that any cancellation would be “economically damaging and embarrassing”.

The Swift tour had been forecast to boost the UK economy by almost £1 billion ($1.3 billion), Barclays bank said in a study entitled “Swiftonomics”.

London’s Metropolitan Police told AFP the force was “operationally independent” with decisions taken on the basis of a “thorough assessment of threat, risk and harm and the circumstances of each case”.

  • Taylor Swift returns to stage in London after Vienna concert plot

Taylor Swift returns to stage in London after Vienna concert plot

Taylor Swift will return to the stage in London on Thursday to end the European leg of her “Eras” tour, a week after her Vienna concerts were cancelled due to a suicide attack plot.

Around 90,000 fans will again pack London’s Wembley Stadium for the first date in the five-day run, with additional ticket checks and restrictions in place.

Last week, all three of the American mega-star’s shows in the Austrian capital were cancelled following the discovery of an Islamic State-inspired plan to launch an attack using explosives and knives.

Three alleged Islamic State sympathisers have been arrested on charges of plotting the atrocity, which was thwarted with the help of US intelligence.

London’s Metropolitan Police has said there was “nothing to indicate that the matters being investigated by the Austrian authorities will have an impact on upcoming events here in London”.

The force was working “closely with venue security teams and other partners to ensure there are appropriate security and policing plans in place”, a police spokesperson said in a statement.

Fans have been warned on Wembley’s website to expect “additional ticket checks” around the stadium.

    – ‘Tay-gating’ –

Swift’s return to the British capital, following three sold-out shows in June, also comes two weeks after three young girls were killed in a stabbing at a dance class themed around the pop star’s music in northwest England.

Following the knife attack, Swift said she was “completely in shock” and at a “complete loss for how to ever convey my sympathies to these families”.

She has not yet commented on the decision to cancel the Vienna shows.

London’s mayor Sadiq Khan told Sky News that the city was “going to carry on working closely with police, ensuring that the Taylor Swift concerts can take place in London safely”.

“We have a huge amount of experience in policing these events, we’re never complacent, many lessons were learned after the awful Manchester Arena attack,” Khan added.

He was referring to the 2017 bombing at an Ariana Grande concert that killed 22 people, some of them children.

Fans without tickets will also not be allowed to “tay-gate” the event — the practice of Swift fans standing outside the venue during the live show to hear the music.

    – Royal audience –

The stadium’s website says that “no one is allowed to stand outside any entrance or… at the front of the stadium” and “non-ticket holders will be moved on”.

While the practice was not permitted at her June concerts there, some fans still managed to gather outside Wembley.

After two performances in Madrid at the end of July, Swift noted around 50,000 “people came out and listened to the show” from a nearby hillside on both nights, “participating in the show from afar”.

Meanwhile, her last London appearances were attended by some high-profile names.

They included Keir Starmer, who was then running to become Britain’s prime minister, and Prince William — celebrating his birthday — along with his children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte.

The singer posted a photo posing with the royals and her boyfriend, American football player Travis Kelce, with the caption “Happy Bday M8! London shows are off to a splendid start”.

After wrapping up the European leg of her record-breaking tour — which began in Paris in May and saw the star perform across the continent — Swift will then head back to North America.

Its final leg there starts on October 18 in Miami.
