Daily Mail yet to submit evidence in Shehbaz Sharif’s defamation case

The Associated Newspapers Limited (ANL), publishers of The Daily Mail and Mail on Sunday, are yet to submit evidence in Shehbaz Sharif’s defamation case after seven months of delay, reports Murtaza Ali Shah for Geo News.

Earlier this year in February, Justice Sir Matthew Nicklin of the London High Court ruled that the article by reporter David Rose carried the highest level of defamation (Chase level 1 – the highest form of defamation in English law) against both Shehbaz Sharif and his son-in-law Ali Imran Yousaf.

The Daily Mail has asked for three extensions, citing [previous] continuing travel restrictions and Pakistan’s Red listing as its team was unable to visit Pakistan to collect evidence, as per sources. However, now that the ban has been lifted, the Mail’s lawyer’s third extension is going to end in a few days.

In July 2019, renowned media law firm Carter-Ruck sued British newspaper The Mail on Sunday, online news site Mail Online and its journalist David Rose on behalf of Shehbaz Sharif for publishing a “politically motivated” article. The story, published on July 14, 2019, had suggested that Shehbaz and his son-in-law Ali Imran Yousaf “stole British taxpayers’ money” given to Earthquake Relief and Reconstruction Authority (ERRA) set up to help the victims of the 2005 Pakistan earthquake.

Prince William and Kate Middleton set to leave London

Prince William and Kate Middleton are reportedly planning to leave London and set up camp near Windsor Castle.

According to a Royal Expert, Katie Nicholl “Neither William nor Kate have ever been London people and have never enjoyed the chaos of the city.”

“Whilst their home at Kensington Palace is highly secure, they have often felt overlooked and that they lacked privacy. The older their children get, the more apparent this has become,” she added.

If the Duke and Duchess relocate they would be just a few minutes drive away from the Queen. Nicholl, in a video stated, “Windsor seems like the ideal situation. The castle is huge in itself and is the Queen’s permanent residence now but there are other housing options for them.”

Bringing their kids to school is also pretty difficult because of the busy London roads and moving to Windsor can make the family’s lives easier.

According to her, everything is on the table and up for discussion.

Currently, the royal pair reside in Anmer Hall, Norfolk where they will spent England’s third lockdown this winter.

British authorities turn down Nawaz Sharif’s request for extension of visit visa

Former Prime Minister and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Supremo, Nawaz Sharif’s request for an extension in his visit visa has been turned down by British authorities, reported Geo News.

Nawaz’s six-month visit visa has expired, after which he had put in a request with the United Kingdom (UK) Home Office to grant him an extension on health grounds.

The request, however, was denied by the immigration department.

PML-N leader has two ways to go about this recent development in relevance to his stay: to appeal the decision with the department, and in the event, it is turned down, he can approach British courts.

Meanwhile, Minister for Interior Sheikh Rasheed said, “Nawaz cannot travel anywhere with his expired Pakistani passport.”

Rasheed further added that Nawaz’s visa had expired on February 16 and that he is “no longer a citizen of Pakistan”.

PML-N spokesperson Marriyum Aurangzeb took to Twitter and tweeted that the British home department in their response has stated that Nawaz can appeal the decision with an immigration tribunal.

She said Nawaz’s lawyers had therefore filed an appeal with the tribunal, his medical records will be included in it as well.

“Nawaz Sharif can legally reside in Britain until the decision,” she said.

The PML-N spokesperson while talking to Geo News said that Nawaz “has not and will never seek political asylum”.

“These people [government] have nothing better than to do than to speak lies about Nawaz Sharif every day,” she said.

  • What does PM Khan regret?

    What does PM Khan regret?

Federal Minister for Interior Sheikh Rasheed on Sunday said that Prime Minister Imran Khan regrets that former prime minister Nawaz Sharif was able to escape from the grip of the law by leaving Pakistan for London.

He said that Nawaz deceived the government and went abroad using “fake medical reports” and the prime minister has great sorrow over this.

The government stopped Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif from going abroad and later placed his name on the Exit Control List (ECL).

Sheikh Rasheed said a person whose name was included in the ECL could challenge the decision in 15 days but Shehbaz Sharif did not challenge the Interior Ministry’s decision.

Rasheed went on to say that PM Imran Khan was lucky to have such an “incompetent” and “sluggish” Opposition.

He further added that the entire Jahangir Tareen group will support the upcoming budget.
