Award ceremonies, listen up – glorifying abuse is not acceptable

From glorifying abusers and then giving them awards, the Lux Style Awards (LSAs) became a sorry affair this year. The coveted LSAs rolled out nominations for its 21st edition. As soon as the names were dropped, viewers condemned what they felt was an injustice to other artists and women.

Actor Feroze Khan, who recently came under fire for alleged abuse against his ex-wife Aliza Sultan, had been nominated in the Best TV Actor – Viewers’ Choice category for his drama Khuda Aur Mohabbat. Aliza had shared proof of domestic violence in court and on social media. Actor Feroze Khan released a statement denying all abuse allegations levied against him a day after fellow celebrities and social media rallied behind his ex-wife. Many are saying the case is still in court, and the court has not given a final verdict on Khan but the court will not be deciding whether Khan abused his wife or not. They are deciding a case of child custody. The proof that his wife submitted, which later went viral on social media, is enough to believe Aliza.

So here are a few questions LSA should answer: Why was a man accused of domestic abuse, one of the nominees? How can a brand that capitalises on selling soap to women, become so insensitive towards their target market? LSA should have set the bar by upholding ethics. It takes courage to stand with victims and survivors of violence and abuse. In a country, where we are still dealing with the horror of the murder of Noor Mukadam, we haven’t yet healed as a nation. Having witnessing the bone-chilling gruesome murder of Sara Shah Nawaz at the hands of a man who was raised as a result of patriarchal norms, here the LSA decides to nominate Khan, further legitimising that men can get away with anything.

We at The Current, on November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, decided to delete all videos and coverage of the LSA. As a platform that supports women’s rights and the rights of all marginalised communities, we strongly believe change starts from within. We hope all award ceremonies in the future, keep in mind that when women come forward with their stories of horror, we, as a community and society, need to support the women, not nominate the men for stardom and applause.

‘Stop glorifying abusers’: Netizens criticise ‘Lux Style Awards’ for awarding Feroze Khan as ‘Best Actor (Popular)’

Actor Feroze Khan won the ‘Best Actor (Popular)’ award at the 21st Lux Style Awards on Thursday. Although Feroze wasn’t present at the event, his elder sister Humaima Malick received the award on his behalf.

This announcement has created a stir on social media as netizens were fumed with anger and disappointment.

Earlier this week netizens expressed their disappointment with Khan’s nomination. On Wednesday, the organisers reacted to the backlash over Feroze’s nomination in the Best Actor category.

The Lux Style Awards (LSAs) will not exclude Feroze Khan from their list of nominees despite widespread criticism, including from Oscar-winning director Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy.

In a statement released on Wednesday night, the awards said, “The Lux Style Awards submissions are received from artists and channels as part of an open call for entries for consideration in the awards. All shortlisted nominations, for the Viewer’s Choice Category of the LSA 2022 are a result of exclusive viewer voting without any intervention by the Awards.

“As part of our third party, the independent and transparent voting process, which is audited end to end by PricewaterhouseCoopers, LSA cannot participate in short-listing, vetting or excluding any submissions or nominations.”

In a statement released on Wednesday night, the awards said, “The Lux Style Awards submissions are received from artists and channels as part of an open call for entries for consideration in the awards. “As part of our third party, the independent and transparent voting process, which is audited end to end by PricewaterhouseCoopers, LSA cannot participate in short-listing, vetting or excluding any submissions or nominations.”

In a follow-up statement, the LSAs said they believe in “respecting the freedom and divert of audience views, and does not regulate or limit engagement (except in cases of content with obscene or inappropriate language) on our social media platforms.”

Their move comes after Obaid Chinoy announced she was returning her Lux Lifetime Achievement Award, which she was awarded in 2012, in protest.

“Lux is a beauty brand that sells soaps to women yet it has chosen to allow the nomination of a man known to have violently abused his ex-wife. Its parent company, Unilever, has a global campaign that says no to domestic violence and advocates against it. The company signed up to the United Nation’s SDGs, including SDG 5 on gender equality,” she wrote, noting that Unilever’s offices in Pakistan do not seem to share the same values.

“In 2012, I was awarded a Lux lifetime achievement award, which I will be sending back to Unilever as the brand and I no longer share the same values. As a society, we must stand together against domestic violence and we must call out those who provide platforms to abusers, “she wrote.

“Unilever and Lux have done a disservice to the awards and to society and it is not ok for them to allow the celebration of abusers.”

Meesha Shafi, Zeb Bangash call out Lux Style Awards for snubbing female singers

Pakistan’s most acclaimed entertainment award show, Lux Style Awards has begun its nomination process. However female singers Meesha Shafi and Zeb Bangash have highlight how there are no women nominated in the music category.

The veteran singer took to her instagram stories to state, “Not a single woman nominated in the LSA music nominations. Erasure at this scale (there is an exceptionally high number of nominations this time) of the entire female population occupying the Pakistani music industry is unjustifiable and highly problematic.”

She also tagged the likes of Hadiqa Kiani, Natasha Noorani, Naseebo Lal, Eva B and Arooj Aftab.

Fellow musician, Zeb Bangash reshared Shafi’s story and wrote that awards and nominations are not necessarily a measure of an artist’s caliber or popularity but they do still play an important role in sending out a message. “To complete ignore women on platform fueled by a woman-centric brand that has always been run by women is surprise and gives cause for concern,” she expressed.

Pakistani singer and composer Bilal Maqsood shared a clip on his official Instagram handle in which the comedian Tabish Hashmi can be seen trolling the guests present at the Lux Style Awards held last month in Karachi.

‘Mera bichara yaar’ famed singer wrote, “This clip got censored from Lux style awards that aired on Sunday.

When @tabishhashmi was roasting everyone he asked me a question too:))”

Tabish commented, “Bilal Bhai next time you will your band a strong name, as strings break.”

“Can I take the liberty of suggesting you a name?” added Tabish.

“You do one thing name your future band ‘Aain‘ [constitution],” suggested Tabish, adding, “You will be scared breaking the constitution.”

On hearing the suggested name, the audience laughed out.

“It was string so it broke, had we named the band ‘Aain tu dhajiyan urr jati’ [ ripped into pieces],” replied Bilal.

  • Ayesha Omar claps back at troll criticising her choice of outfit

Ayesha Omar claps back at troll criticising her choice of outfit

Ayesha Omar gave a befitting reply to a troll who criticised her for her choice of outfit.

Commenting under a post which talked about how Omar promoted women empowerment by wearing a local label run by two women to the Lux Style Awards, a social media user commented: “If she is promoting women to expose of their body (via such clothes), then that surely is not ‘women empowerment’.”

“Such a misquoted term,” they added.

Responding to the comment, Ayesha wrote: “I’m definitely not promoting/ asking/urging women to expose their bodies. That is their own choice as wearing this dress was mine. As wearing whatever you want is yours.”

Talking about the outfit, Ayesha said: “This dress was sent to me as it is. I had no input in the design, length, structure or type of dress they were making for me. They only asked for my size. They contacted me themselves and sent me this outfit in June.”

The actor continued: “I wasn’t paid to wear or promote it either and was waiting for an appropriate opportunity to wear it. I’m promoting and showcasing their work/talent: the beautiful beaded hand embellishments.”

“If you could look beyond a bit of my limbs showing, it would be nice to appreciate someone’s hard work without being judgmental. Try it. It uplifts both parties.”

Ayesha concluded her note by sharing the meaning of the word empowerment.

In another comment, when a user remarked that such outfits provoke rape cases, Ayesha hit back saying: “Oh so that explains 4-month-old babies, 5-year-olds and 7-year-old girls and being raped?”

Later, in an Instagram post, Ayesha said that 2020 was a crazy year and she saw many people suffer physically, emotionally and financially which is why she decided to would try and help as many people as she could in whatever capacity.

“One of those ways was to use my social media platforms to promote social causes, NGOs, public service messages and small businesses throughout the year. (completely free of charge),” said the actor. “Every day I would receive quite a few packages, messages and queries and I tried to promote as many products and services as I could.”

Omar has often been criticised for her choice of outfits but she has always clapped back brilliantly.

Hasnain Lehri dedicates ‘Best Model’ award to late brother

Hasnain Lehri has dedicated his fourth Lux Style Award (LSA) to his younger brother, who passed away in May 2019 due to a cardiac arrest.

In a post shared on social media, the model said: “I dedicate this award to my younger brother, whom we lost last year. It has been my biggest trial and a tough time for my family.”

“For me, this isn’t just an award for creating art but the acknowledgement to myself that I am strong enough to be on my feet again. After his passing I had no motivation, I lost faith in myself.. one day I was just sitting going through Facebook and saw my younger brothers’ old status saying ‘Keep on making me proud’ which gave me the strength I needed, and because of his words today I am holding my fourth award.”

The model further shared: “I read this somewhere that ‘Jo loug gir ke khud apnay pairoun per kharay hotay hain Khuda unn ki bohut madad kerta hai’ and I tried to stand back on my feet and Allah has always been there for me! And for people out there who have lost their loved ones, always remember one thing, they are far away from you ‘per woh aapkay dil mei hamesha rehte hain’.

Thanking his fans he said, “Last but not least, I love my fans. This is possible because of the love and respect you show me. Thank you.”

Lehri won four (2016, 2017,2018, 2020) Best Male Model awards at the LSAs.
