Mahira weds and the biggest, saddest debate on social: who has more money – her husband or her?

Pakistan’s sweetheart Mahira Khan has officially married her long-term partner Salim Karim over the weekend. Short snippets we received of the ceremony showed it was an emotional moment for the bride and groom, who could be seen shedding tears as Mahira walked down the altar, looking mesmerising in ivory.

We’re incredibly happy for her, and we will keep championing women finding their happily ever after- but it seems like the Pakistani instinct to crush any woman in love remains ever present like some disease. Because we can’t fathom the idea that a woman could marry for love, right? Itna rata tou Pakistani dramas ko dekh kar lagwa liya hai.

A tweet has gained a lot of traction on X (formerly Twitter) where a user shared the unverified net worth of Mahira’s husband Salim- which totaled up to $1 million dollars, claiming that the actress got married for the sake of money rather than love.

“So in the end, its all about money. Larkooo!! Paise kamao ….” the user wrote.

Why would the biggest actress of Pakistan- who is also an ambassador for international brands like Lux- want to marry for money? Mahira doesn’t even star in most of the biggest projects currently airing in Pakistan, yet she makes international headlines because of a small snippet from her wedding. The math is not mathing here.

Why did we feel so necessary to write a long piece slamming this insensitive tweet, since we have lives as well? Because this isn’t just something Mahira alone has faced. Countless women in Pakistan are scrutinised for marrying of their own accord, or even being happy in their marriages because on a regular basis they are met with gossip mongers’ who assume these women married for money. But these women and Mahira are not being targetted because of money- it’s because our ghulami mindset mulk can’t imagine a woman being this happy on her wedding day and being in love with a man. It doesn’t sit right with Pakistanis that a woman is miserable since she has been bound for life to another man, and Mahira isn’t.

Mahira Khan is a woman who is completely self-made, did not rely on any man to build up her career, and then went on to travel the entire world on her own while being a single mother. A woman living her life on her own terms, choosing to get married in her forties and doing so while having been married previously and also having a son? Not something easy to swallow for a Pakistani man.

Our mard hazarat can’t settle on the prospect that any woman can be financially secure and choose who she wants to marry, since our cultural upbringing teaches us it is men who can be the sole providers and women must depend on them for survival so therefore, marriage is done purely on the basis of financial security, not for love or comfort. But here is a woman marrying someone she was in a relationship with for a while, and shattering this stereotype while looking phenomenal on her wedding. Clearly the knee-jerk reaction is to assume Mahira is a gold digger, right?

Have social media users learned about the concept of leaving other people’s private business alone? It is not Mahira’s job to justify to you why she chose to get married, and it clearly is no one’s business to make assumptions about such a thing. Rather than fixating on whether an actress had any ulterior motives behind marrying, focus this much energy on your own life because trust us- by the end of the day Mahira will keep outshining her haters and so will every other woman who laughed away on her wedding.

No woman owes any one explanations about her personal life, and we hope Mahira keeps on living rent-free in the minds of haters.

What did Mahira Khan wear on her wedding?

Last night social media was ablaze when short clips released by superstar Mahira Khan’s manager Anushay Talha, and brother Hissan Khan, showed the actress getting married in a dreamy ceremony to her long time beau, Salim Karim. The seven second video was moving enough to make social media tear up as their favourite actress found her happily ever after. Most importantly, it was her gorgeous wedding dress that mesmerised everyone.

The ‘Verna’ actress embodied every bit of the happy bride. She looked stunning in an ivory lengha choli silver ensemble, taking the pastel bride route that many Bollywood actresses like Parineeti Chopra, Kiara Advani and Alia Bhatt had embraced as well on their wedding days. To top her look, Pakistan’s sweetheart chose to go for a simple makeup look with her hair pulled back in a bun. As for jewelry, she picked an elegant diamond jewelry set which consisted of a choker necklace, jhumkas and a mang tikka, and a sheer veil donned over in a graceful manner as she walked down the aisle to her betrothed.

Mahira wanted to include only close friends and family to take part on her big day as well as her wedding dress. Her wedding dress was exclusively designed by longtime friend and fashion collaborator Faraz Manan, who confirmed this by sharing the post Mahira’s manager had uploaded.

Faraz Manan is one of the most sought out Pakistani fashion designers who has also worked with Bollywood stars like Aliya Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor and Deepika Padukone.

In June, Faraz Manan was selected to dress ace footballer Christiano Ronaldo’s partner Georgina Rodriguez for Harper Bazar’s Arabia cover.

Mahira Khan sparked rumors about her new-found romance in 2020 during an interview with Samina Peerzada, where she simply confirmed that she’s in love with someone now. In a live session with fashion designer HSY, the actress opened up about her romance with Salim, and said she was very happy in her relationship:

“There’s a line in Humsafar, which I thought was beautiful, where Ashar says to Khirad, ‘Pata nahi tum mujhe kis naiki kay badlay main milli ho. I think the same about him. I must have done something good in my life.”

HSY, while asking Mahira about ‘the one’ accidentally mentioned that his name is Salim, much to Mahira’s chagrin. However, when HSY apologised and continued to ask how she feels when she looks into his eyes, Mahira said, “There’s a line in Humsafar, which I thought was beautiful, where Ashar says to Khirad, ‘Pata nahi tum mujhe kis naiki kay badlay main milli ho. I think the same about him. I must have done something good in my life.”

Mahira added that she feels the same way about other people in her life, including her son Azlaan.

“I feel super, super grateful for my child too, he’s the centre of my world. My world revolves around him, and I feel the same way about him, the people I love” she remarked.

Earlier, when the designer had asked Mahira if he was the one and if there’s a wedding around the corner, the actor said, “I think marriages are beautiful and weddings even more fun. But I don’t think marriage is the be-all and end of. It’s another step, yes, but I think in our society, it’s a big deal.”

“But if you ask me if he’s the one, yes he’s the one.”

Mahira added: “When you find someone, where you and him are not just in an isolated thing. But his friends are your friends, your friends are his friends and his family is your family and vice versa, it’s such a good feeling.”

At that point HSY asked Mahira to reveal the name but she shied away. HSY also said that Mahira’s beau is an incredible person, “very handsome and smart as hell”.

Superstar Mahira Khan ties the knot with Salim Karim in intimate ceremony

Pakistan’s sweetheart Mahira Khan made social media sob last night when videos emerged of her intimate wedding to longtime beau Salim Karim. In a posted on Instagram by her brother Hissan Khan, the actress looked absolutely breathtaking in an ivory lengha choli along with a patterned veil and her hair in a bun, as she hugged her betrothed at the altar.

In another clip posted by her manager Anushay T Khan, Mahira and her beau could be seen shedding tears as they walked towards each other on their wedding day. The video moved social media users, many getting emotional while watching the sobbing couple.

The details we know are that the wedding took place in an undisclosed location in Bhurban, with only childhood friends and family members present who weren’t allowed to keep their phones during the three day ceremony. Esteemed wedding destination photgrapher Izzah Shaheen Malik was selected for the photographs and video coverage of the event. Mahira Khan had reportedly picked Faraz Mannan for her big day.

Rumors began circulating that the Pakistani superstar was finally committed and in love when in 2020 during an interview with Samina Peerzada, Mahira confirmed that she was in love and disclosed that the person was not from the industry. In a live talk hosted by fashion designer HSY, the actress gushed about her beau saying:

“There’s a line in Humsafar which I thought was beautiful, where Ashar says to Khirad, ‘Pata nahi tum mujhay kis naiki ke badlay mein mili ho’ and I think the same about him. I must have done something good in my life that God has sent him my way.”

Mahira’s beau Salim Karim is a business tycoon, the CEO of the startup Simpaisa, and also a professional DJ.

This is the ‘Verna’ superstar’s second marriage. She divorced first husband Ali Asghar in 2015, with whom she shares a son Azlan.

We’re sending our sincerest congratulations to the happy pair, and are eagerly waiting for more pictures to arrive of the joyous occasion.

Indian director has a wish related to Pakistani actors, musicians

After viral videos showed the Pakistani cricket team getting a warm reception at Hyderabad from fans and media alike, its clear that the politics of hate failed to diminish the love and respect Indian fans have for Pakistani celebrities, and vice versa. Given this, Indian director Rahul Dholakia has suggested that it’s about time Pakistani actors were given permission to act in Indian films.

“Now that Pakistani cricketers are officially here, can we also invite Pakistani actors to act in our films? Or musicians to perform?” the ‘Raees’ director wrote in a viral tweet.

Rahul Dholakia’s film ‘Raees’ starred Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan and Pakistani actress Mahira Khan. Recently, in a podcast FWhy with Freiha Altaf, the actress spoke at length about the backlash she received after the ban was imposed, preventing Pakistani actors from working in India, and how it impacted her mental health. The ‘Razia’ actress revealed that she was diagnosed with manic depression and has been on medication for the past six to seven years.

“I talk it every chance I get. This is the first time I’m opening up about the fact that I’ve been taking medicine for so many years. And when I tried leaving it like I said it was bad… And I was again in and out of hospitals trying to get help. But yes, everybody has ups and downs, bad times and happy times, but clinical depression is real like any other mental illness or physical illness.”

Mahira Khan’s ‘Razia’ is speaking about the plight of young women in Pakistan like no one else

Bold, confident and hard-hitting, Mahira Khan is back once more and this time she is not afraid to hold up a mirror to society’s face. Her new drama ‘Razia’ is creating buzz on social media. Mahira is no longer the sweet and naive female lead as we have known her. She’s the narrator who tells the story of how a young girl born in a conservative household in Pakistan learns to overcome every hardship to chase her dream.

From the get go, this show keeps you hooked by telling you a story we’re all familiar with, but every episode is a gut punch on how Pakistani girls are robbed of their dreams and hopes because of patriarchy. Mahira waltzes around the stage and speaks with the audience about the journey of the young girl Razia, whose birth was a disappointment for the grandmother who wanted a boy. From that point, she continues to be punished for the crime of being born a daughter.

Two episodes in, and we’re already awed by how the show speaks out on the ways young women are deprived of their dreams, whether it is something as small as eating after their brother does, or as monumental as Razia’s father banning her from playing outside because she is older now. And already, some of the powerful monologues in the episodes are gaining praise on social media.

A user praised this scene where in a monologue from episode 1, Mahira points out how young girls today are no longer murdered on their birth, but are today buried alive by the consistent backlash society imposes on them

  • ‘Young people are difficult to work with’: Fahad Mustafa on why he’s not acting anymore

Actor and producer Fahad Mustafa was a guest on Vasay Chaudhry’s talk show ‘Gup Shab’, where he opened up about giving a break to acting.

The ‘Mein Abdul Kadir Hoon’ actor revealed that he missed the times when he was working with big names like Vasay Chaudhry, Humayun Saeed and Mahira Khan, and said it was difficult to work with young actors of today.

“I worked with Vasay, Humayun, Mehwish, Mahira Khan, who are all stars now. It’s easy to work with them and there is a reason why they’re all stars because I feel that it’s incredibly easy to work with them. Currently looking at the young actors of today, it’s hard to work with them. I’m not criticising their talent, just pointing out regarding getting along on set.”

“Because we had not witnessed any vanity on sets,” the ‘Actor in Law’ actor added. “We could all sit in a room and get along. When it gets incredibly hard to sit together in a room during set, then you can’t work together either. This is my biggest fear.”

  • Why wasn’t ‘Maula Jatt’ nominated for the Lux Style Awards?

Why wasn’t ‘Maula Jatt’ nominated for the Lux Style Awards?

Nominations for the 22nd Lux Style Awards were announced on 3rd September, with industry members being quick to notice one notable omission. ‘The Legend of Maula Jatt’, the biggest hit of the year, was not nominated among the films. Surprising considering that the movie received critical acclaim for its writing, acting, action sequences and made $13.8 million worldwide.

Journalist Hassan Kazmi has uncovered the reason now, by releasing a statement from film producer Ammara Hikmat, who stated:

“While we are honoured that Lux considered our film for their nominations, we find that their limited range of film categories doesn’t align with our values. The absence of categories for best director or writer, etc, disregarding their major and substantial creative contributions, while including one for best playback song doesn’t resonate with our vision for comprehensive film recognition. Therefore, we’ve decided not to make an exception in this case.”

Kazmi further tweeted that the team behind ‘TLOMJ’ had stepped back so to give other films a proper chance:

“The Legend of Maula Jatt is not even up for votes in #LSA2023 I have learnt that the makers have #TLOMJ have regretted as it was the biggest film, so the makers have decided to give others a chance. I have learnt from the sources that The Legend of Maula Jatt will be acknowledged at the main event in October this year.”

While Maula Jatt is out of the running, once more male actors charged with abuse have been nominated for the Lux Style Awards. Feroze Khan, who was publicly accused by his ex-wife Syeda Aliza of domestic violence and torture, was nominated twice for best male actor in dramas, and also for his performance in ‘Tich Button’.

While Mohsin Abbas Haider, who was publicly accused by his wife of domestic abuse, and then found guilty by a Lahore court in 2019, was nominated for his performance in the drama ‘Siyani’.

‘Psychiatrist told me I had manic depression’, Mahira opens up about mental health

Superstar Mahira Khan was a guest on Frieha Altaf’s podcast where she opened up about learning to face her mental health struggles, especially after stepping into Bollywood with the Shah Rukh Khan starrer ‘Raees’, and the 2017 incident where pictures of her smoking with Ranbir Kapoor emerged online. She also talked about the 2016 Uri attack, after which Pakistani actors were banned from working in Bollywood.

Reflecting on that time, the actress revealed she dealt with immense backlash, calling it “unexpected”.

Mahira said she was getting scary calls, hateful messages to the point that she couldn’t travel to India to promote ‘Raees’, which was heartbreaking and it began creating anxiety and depression. The ‘Hum Kahan Kay Sachay Thay’ actress revealed she was constantly seeing her image on television screens, and getting hateful messages telling her to leave India, and it escalated to the point that her faith broke.

“I developed severe anxiety to the point that one day I had a panic attack and fainted’ recalled Mahira. “That’s the first time I went for therapy.”

“But that didn’t work out, as I went to several therapists. But either I was not opening up, or the therapist sitting across me would be looking at me with awe thinking ‘what would she have to complain about’?”

Raees released in 2017, the same year Mahira’s Pakistani film ‘Verna’ released across Pakistan, and at the same time, the picture scandal happened.

“I couldn’t sleep, my hands would shake,” the ‘Bin Roye’ actress confessed.

Mahira said she eventually visited a psychiatric hospital, where she was informed that she had manic depression. The actress said for the past six or seven years she has been on anti-depressants. She once tried quitting the meds in the middle which put her in a dark hole.

“I did understand that there is something beyond me. Beyond the prayers i will do, beyond the friends that will cheer me up, beyond work and success. There is something not right, and it’s okay.”

The ‘Superstar’ actress said that by talking about her mental health struggles and breaking the stigma surrounding the topic, she hoped more people would learn to approach others for help rather than treat it with shame.

A few days ago, Mahira shared a seven-second video of her walking towards Fawad. The clip spread like wildfire across social media. Clearly the two know how much power they hold over the generation that loved Khirad and Ashar.

The duo look exquisite posing for the campaign ‘Phir Milenge’, with Mahira wearing a red blouse and matching lengha adorned with silver patterns, pairing it with silver jewelry. Her hair is pulled back in a bun. Fawad wears a grey kurta with matching pajamas.
