  • US officials take notice Ishaq Dar’s heckling incident at airport

The Foreign Office (FO) of Pakistan said that United States (US) officials had taken notice of an incident in which Finance Minister (FM) Ishaq Dar was heckled at the Dulles International Airport in Washington DC.

FO Spokesperson Asim Iftikhar Ahmad recalled the time when Saudi authorities raised the issue when the government delegation was targeted by certain individuals during the visit.

On Thursday, Dar was harassed at the airport and people can be heard chanting “chor”. This was followed by an exchange of abusive words from both sides.

Dar is currently in the US on a four-day visit to attend the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank.

It is pertinent to mention that this is not the first time that a Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader has been harassed.

Prior to this incident, Minister of Information Marriyum Aurangzeb was heckled and harassed by a group of PML-N’s political opponents in London while she was in a coffee shop.

In July, Federal Minister for Planning and Development Ahsan Iqbal was harassed by a group of PTI supporters when he went to a restaurant in Pakistan.

Actor and politician Atiqa Odho took to her Instagram handle to school the people involved in trolling of PML-N’s Marriyum Aurangzeb.

The senior politician, who is currently in London was verbally harassed by several PTI supporters at a coffee shop and on the road. The supporters shouted at Aurangzeb. The crowd also included women who used abusive language.

The Pyar Ke Sadqay star wrote, “You may not agree with someone’s piolitics but harrassment of this nature is unacceptable as this is not the way to solve national issues.”

She added, “You achieve nothing with bad and immature behaviour. Don’t get carried away by emotion and lack of proof or correct information. Get your facts right, have evidence for them and then follow the law always. Otherwise you are playing with Pakistan’s future.”

Last year Atiqa schooled Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan on not wearing a mask.

“Madam, put your mask on please,” wrote the veteran actor on Twitter alongside a maskless picture of Dr Awan.

“I’m amazed to see how even government officials are not wearing masks during events and press conferences,” lamented Odha, adding: “How do they expect people to follow COVID SOPs.”

“Lead by example folks or then deal with the growing crisis,” said the actor further.

‘Removing, transferring CCPO is upto me’: CM Punjab takes stand over CCPO’s transfer

Punjab is once again caught up in a controversy over the filing of cases against Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leaders as the Lahore police chief has refused to relinquish his charge, saying he will not do so unless directed by the provincial government, reports The News.

The federal government, withdrawing the services of Lahore Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Ghulam Mahmood Dogar, directed him to report to the Establishment Division for further order.

However, Chief Minister (CM) Punjab Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi, refusing to abide by the orders, said that the Centre had no power to order the transfer.

“Removing or transferring the CCPO is my authority,” said Elahi in a tweet.

Later, Elahi’s son, Moonis Elahi, took to Twitter and shared a video of a meeting between the CM and Dogar.

In the video, the CM can be heard saying, “We will not let you go anywhere.”

Speaking to Geo News, Ghulam Dogar said that he will not relinquish his charge until and unless asked by the Punjab government.

The development came after a case was filed against PML-N leaders Javed Latif and Marriyum Aurangzeb for allegedly “using religion to instil and spread hatred” against PTI chief and former Prime Minister Imran Khan.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leaders, Federal Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb and PML-N central leader Javed Latif, have been booked in terror cases in Punjab.

The two have been accused of allegedly “using religion to instill and spread hatred” against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief and former prime minister Imran Khan.

Punjab Home Minister Hashim Dogar shared on Twitter the First Information Report (FIR) filed against the PML-N leaders.

Pakistan Television Managing Director Sohail Khan and controller programme Rashid Baig have also been nominated in the case. The complaint said that a press conference in which Imran Khan was accused, was shown on national television.

Taking to Twitter, PTI leader Fawad Chaudhry said, “Using religion card against PML-N and other opponents is as bad by any PTI follower as it is for others.”

“We demand not to use religious hatred campaigns against our leadership or opponents,” tweeted Fawad.

Latif had accused the PTI chief of “attacking the basic principles of Islam” by “supporting” the Ahmediyya community during his tenure.

“When Imran made Naya Pakistan, units of Qadianis became active in Karachi […] Did Imran not give interviews to the foreign media in which he said that Qadianis will be given religious freedom,” Latif had asked.

‘Name them’: Marriyum challenges Khan to name agencies that briefed him on PPP, PML-N’s corruption

Minister for Information Marriyum Aurangzeb on Friday challenged Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan to name the agencies and the people working in them who he claimed had briefed him on the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s (PML-N) alleged corruption.

Addressing a news conference today, the minister said, “Who used to give you these reports? Who used to tell you all these things? Name them.”

The information minister recalled that Khan had earlier said that the appointment of Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja was done after he was given guarantee of his neutrality.

“You said the agency had given you guarantees about the CEC […] who had given you the guarantees? What did they say? And why were you receiving guarantees?”

“Did you ask for those reports? And who from the agencies gave you reports?”

“Imran Khan sahab, stop this drama and lies. If you have the courage, tell us who from what agency used to give you reports on PPP and PML-N […],” she demanded.

“You slung mud on other people, and you say the agencies were giving you briefings? Do you have any shame?” she questioned. “You made a joke of such a big country’s democracy. Do you think your sins will be forgiven if you say agencies were giving you briefings? Then take their names.”

Aurangzeb alleged that after the no-confidence vote, Imran “begged the neutrals to protect him”.

“But when the institutions played the role of neutrals, which is a line sketched by the Constitution […] you are now, once again, asking them to help you and save your false politics”.

Former prime minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan on Thursday, August 18, wondered about the role of the ‘establishment’ in curbing corruption, saying he always thought that ‘establishment’ was against corrupt rulers.

“Why did you let these corrupt leaders imposed upon the country when you yourself [establishment] would say that they are corrupt,” added Khan.

He also revealed that agencies had informed him about the corruption scandals of incumbent rulers when he was the prime minister. Imran also reiterated that attempts were being made to disqualify him and bring back Nawaz Sharif, who was disqualified for life by the Supreme Court, from London to put both of them in the same position.

Official PML-N Twitter account replaces Miftah with Ishaq Dar

Finance Minister Miftah Ismail and Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb addressed a press conference in Islamabad today (June 23) about the economy.

When the press conference started, the official Twitter account of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) shared the live stream link but replaced the current finance minister’s name with PML-N’s former finance minister Ishaq Dar.

“Federal minister Information Marriyum Aurangzeb and Finance Minister Ishaq Dar’s press conference,” tweeted PML-N.

However, the tweet was deleted after users pointed out the faux pas. A new tweet with Miftah’s name was then shared.

In a joint press conference, the finance minister expressed hopes of the economy getting better with the expected Chinese loan and the ongoing dialogue with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Miftah Ismail revealed that they have reached an understanding with the IMF over the budget’s measures. The details of the discussion on the federal budget for the fiscal year 2023 would be revealed in the National Assembly and then they will close the budget, he added.

“It is a historic budget as we have neither increased indirect taxes not imposed taxes on commodities or consumption,” said Miftah.

Maryam Nawaz removes ARY mic from news conference, Kashif Abbasi asks where PML-N’s press freedom slogan has gone now?

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Vice President Maryam Nawaz before starting her press conference in Lahore on Tuesday, removed ARY News’ mic from the table, accusing the media house of propaganda against state institutes and PML-N.

“Whoever is here from ARY, I completely respect you, but there is no way a media house can run a campaign against state institutes or start working on someone else’s agenda,” she added.

Senior journalist and anchorperson Kashif Abbasi of ARY News took to Twitter and said that ARY News has been removed from cables across Pakistan. It is being reported that ARY has been taken down in parts of Pakistan following the orders of the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) to the cable operators.

Abbasi blamed Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Vice President Maryam Nawaz and Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb as the main reason for the orders. Abbasi tweeted, “Ary removed from cables across pakistan.Maryam nawaz ne jalsa main ary pe tanqeed shuru ker aur ab Marium ne channel band ker dia.opposition main jamhooriat ka dard hai ke sone nahin deta.hukoomat main asliyat Nazar aati in sab ki.” [Maryam Nawaz criticised ARY during her jalsa and Marriyum Aurangzeb later shut down the channel. When they’re in Opposition, they want democracy but when in power, their reality is exposed.]

The Current reached out to Kashif Abbasi, who asked the sitting government why they shut down ARY News.

Abbasi said, “A news channel covers both the Opposition and the government, which is what ARY is doing. Covering the Opposition is not an issue, and there is nothing new in this. But how can you shut down a news channel on the basis of the coverage it is providing? When they are in Opposition, they represent themselves as being the biggest democrats and supporters of press freedom. Where has their press freedom gone now? All I want to know from the sitting government is why have they shut down the channel.”

Nayatel, which is an internet service and streaming platform, has moved ARY from channel 7 to channel 66.

“All licensed operators of Pakistan have shifted the position of ARY News channel. It’s available at 66 positions on Nayatel’s Basic Cable TV,” tweeted Nayatel.

Following the shutdown of ARY News, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Fawad Chaudhry tweeted that ARY News has been taken off the air in various areas, adding that the fascist government thinks censorship will succeed in the 21st century.
