Maryam Nawaz responds to criticism over overseas surgery

Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Maryam Nawaz responded to widespread criticism on Wednesday about why she went abroad for her surgery instead of having it done in Pakistan.

Nawaz, speaking to party workers in London, clarified that she had to undergo parathyroid surgery, which cannot be done in Pakistan, noting that “only Switzerland and America have the technology for this particular surgery.”

Responding to rumours about her health, she denied having throat “cancer”.

She stated, while addressing Punjab’s smog crisis, that the smog had developed over the past seven to eight years, and its effects can not be mitigated overnight, noting, “The Punjab government is using AI technology to trace smoke-emitting vehicles.”

Maryam Nawaz’s remarks came after she was strongly criticised by politicians and activists, who pointed out that her province was grappling with a severe smog crisis while she was enjoying fresh air in Switzerland.

Lahore is consistently ranked as the worst city in the world in terms of air quality index, according to the Swiss air quality monitor IQAir.

The US Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Air Quality Index (AQI) revealed that a value of 50 or below indicates good air quality, while a value above 300 signals hazardous air quality.

The air quality index in Punjab’s capital has exceeded 1000 a number of times this year alone.

  • Fact Check: ‘Issues of Parathyroid are easily treatable in Pakistan’; endocrinologist denies Maryam Nawaz’s claims

Fact Check: ‘Issues of Parathyroid are easily treatable in Pakistan’; endocrinologist denies Maryam Nawaz’s claims

Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz has recently shed light on her medical condition, which caused her to go to Geneva. In her own words, she said, “I have an issue of parathyroid; I even had surgery in Geneva last year, in January.”

She addressed the criticism being levelled against her by the public and the opponents, “I’ve been hearing a lot of people ask whether there’s not a single hospital in Pakistan where this surgery could have been performed. All my treatment was done in Pakistan. However, this parathyroid condition is one that can only be treated in two countries. It is not even available in England – only in Switzerland or America,” she said categorically.

She also made it a point to dismiss rumours of thyroid cancer: “I have been seeing that certain vlogs have been made about me, and it is being said that I have thyroid cancer. I don’t have cancer.” On this, the crowd started cheering for her, chanting “shame, shame.”

“I did not want to talk about my condition because playing a victim and crying about it is not what I have learnt from my parents.” She went on to add that she doesn’t like talking about her personal life in front of the media but had to say this because “it has been talked about a lot back home.”

The Current reached out to an endocrinologist, who preferred not to be named, to ask which thyroid conditions may require surgery and whether those treatments are available in Pakistan.

The doctor, a senior endocrinologist at a leading hospital in the provincial capital, said that parathyroid issues are very common and easily treatable in Pakistan.

Thyroid and parathyroid are related glands under the skin in the throat and are responsible for producing hormones.

The pea-sized four small parathyroid glands are actually embedded within the thyroid gland. Its function is to control the metabolism of calcium in the body.

While tumours can develop in the parathyroid, they are largely benign and are removed if they increase in size or become hyperactive. This condition is called adenoma, and the first line of treatment for that is surgery because it disturbs the calcium levels in the body, which could lead to kidney stones, osteoporosis and other health problems.

The surgery requires the extraction of both the thyroid and parathyroid glands, which could produce deficiencies in the body but can be fixed by taking tablets for the rest of life.

The doctor told The Current that such surgeries are complicated but not entirely impossible in Pakistan as there are many specialists present in Karachi’s Agha Khan Hospital, Dow University Hospital and a couple of other institutes. Likewise, there are many in Lahore with some public hospital Endocrinologist Departments having the expertise to do so.

Doctor Waqas Nawaz on Twitter posted a detailed explainer on the options available in Pakistan related to Maryam Nawaz’s condition with the title, “Medical Facts, Not Political Agendas: The Reality of Parathyroid Disease Treatment in Pakistan”.

Tagging Maryam Nawaz, he stated: ‘It is misleading and inaccurate to claim by Maryam Nawaz  that parathyroid diseases are only treated in the USA and Switzerland.”

“Parathyroid conditions such as hyperparathyroidism and hypoparathyroidism have treatment options available in many countries around the world, including UK, Pakistan, France, Germany, Australia, India, the UAE,  Qatar and many others.”

In his tweet, he listed out all related diseases like parathyroid adenoma, which requires surgery, and other medications like Cinacalcet, Biphosphonates and Denosumab, which are given in high parathyroid production, are all available in different medical institutes of Pakistan.

Dr Waqas further elaborated that “In the case of hypoparathyroidism, treatment typically involves calcium and vitamin D supplements, and for severe chronic cases, Teriparatide (a PTH analogue) is available in Pakistan for replacement therapy with the name “Forteo”.”

However, he also mentioned that he felt the need to write this fact-check to correct the medical inaccuracies, as such disinformation can have serious consequences.

While the prevalence of parathyroid disease is around one per cent, Dr Nawaz delineated the specialists that have been serving in different hospitals in Pakistan and that such statements create despair in the Pakistani community.

While it is the patient’s right to seek treatment in any country they choose, being a public figure and a leader comes with an added responsibility. In his concluding remarks, Dr Waqas hoped against hope that Maryam Nawaz “will correct this error and take the necessary steps to correct it because the parathyroid disease affecting thousands of Pakistani patients is equally important, and medical facts are not the  political ballot boxes that could be manipulated for personal agendas.”

  • Maryam Nawaz comes under fire for wearing fur coat while Punjab goes through smog crisis

Maryam Nawaz comes under fire for wearing fur coat while Punjab goes through smog crisis

Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif has come under fire on social media for wearing what appears to be a luxurious fur coat in London while addressing Punjab’s smog crisis on November 12.

The optics for the Punjab’s Chief Minister aren’t good as the citizens of the province, and in particular Lahore, go through one of the worst climate catastrophes in history.

A dark haze has engulfed Punjab’s major cities, including Lahore and Multan, with poor visibility. Furthermore, traffic on the motorway is also suspended due to the smog crisis.

Nasa’s satellite images show both Lahore and New Delhi shrouded in thick smog with no green cover.

Netizens criticised the timing of Mayam’s visit overseas as her province is experiencing a crisis. CM Punjab, while talking to reporters, stated, “We are taking action against smog and will eliminate this smog in a few years. I am so sorry for the fact that this problem has been pushed to such an extent because they [previous government] had no concern for such a serious issue.”

Netizens on X (formerly Twitter) couldn’t help but notice the fur coat Maryam Nawaz had adorned with one user writing, “Inflation is ending in Punjab – Maryam Nawaz. The fur coat is currently worth 24,000 dollars to 71,000 dollars, the price of glasses is 1,140 dollars, Hermes Birkini bags are 60,000 dollars, making fun of Pakistanis.”

Another social media user criticised Maryam’s presence abroad, writing, “Smog will be fixed in a few years, says Maryam Nawaz while cosplaying as Sicilian Mafia donned with “fox fur” breathing fresh air in london as Form-47 CM of Punjab where Millions suffer with persistent Respiratory diseases, flu, cough, headache etc.”

One user wrote, “Maryam Nawaz’s most recent public appearance shows that the govt is not taking this issue seriously. So many ppl in this country could fix this issue and advise our politicians on optics. From jokes being made to moving to Karachi, to fur lapels and blaming old cars. We’re doomed.”

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Bilawal Bhutto Zardari took to X to post a screenshot of Air Quality Indexes of different cities with Karachi having a relatively better score. Bhutto wrote, “Dear Pakistan, move to Karachi. ”

Interestingly enough, this isn’t the first time Maryam Nawaz has come under criticism from the public for wearing expensive items. In 2022, when Pakistan was hit with devastating floods, Maryam Nawaz was seen wearing a fur coat (Ermanno Scervino) worth $4,648 (Rs1,029,789.5 including duties & handling fees included), according to News 360.

Maryam Nawaz wants to bring Lahore’s film industry back to life

Punjab Chief minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has taken a major step to revive Punjab’s film industry by setting up a 29 member steering committee.

The committee is dedicated to addressing challenges faced by artists and revitalizing Lahore as Pakistan’s cinematic hub. With Punjab’s rich cultural heritage, this initiative aims to restore Lahore’s historical status in the film industry and offer a brighter future for artists across the province.

Former federal minister and senior leader of PML-N Pervaiz Rashid will represent the Chief Minister on the committee, while senior minister Mariyam Aurangzeb has been appointed as the convener. The committee includes prominent figures like Information minister Punjab Azma Bohari, provincial secretaries of information, tourism, and finance leading, along with leading personalities from the film and arts sector.

Members will modernize film production infrastructure in Punjab. The committee has been tasked to establish the Punjab Film Fund, that shall provide financial backing and incentives for the sector to grow further.
Tasks include creating a plan to build a state of the art film city, a film academy, and a technologically advanced film lab.
Maryam Nawaz has directed the committee to submit detailed recommendations within 15 days. A key element of this plan is the artist welfare system, designed to provide health insurance, social security, and welfare benefits for artists.

The committee’s work will also include creating spaces for artistic expression and supporting emerging talent. A major objective is to increase the number of cinema houses across Punjab, offering more screening venues for local films. Special incentives for investors are also being considered to boost cinema development and foster new business opportunities in film.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has approved an increase in grant for the Artist Service card, enhancing support for artists across the province. Chairing the 19th meeting of the Punjab Cabinet, the chief minister emphasized that the new policy would cover both financial and social support, aiming to create a stable environment for the artist community across the province.

  • PML-N says Nawaz hasn’t decided to become PM for fourth time

PML-N says Nawaz hasn’t decided to become PM for fourth time

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) head and former prime minister Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif has not yet decided to become prime minister for the fourth time, if his party wins the forthcoming elections, sources have disclosed to The News.

A PML-N leader and close friend of Nawaz Sharif told The News that the PML-N supremo has not expressed any intention yet to become a fourth-time prime minister, adding that if the idea is being discussed within the Sharif family, most of PML-N leadership are not aware of it.

The party itself wants to see Nawaz Sharif as the prime minister of Pakistan. According to a source within PML-N, the party has adopted the slogan of making Nawaz Sharif premier for the fourth time.

“It will be a sweet revenge of democracy from those who removed Nawaz Sharif as prime minister in 2017,” said the source.

PML-N president and senior vice president, Shehbaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz, are currently under consideration for the position of prime minister, with some expressing concerns about Maryam’s potential candidature due to her perceived lack of experience and potential unacceptability in certain circles. Maryam may be given an important position in Punjab instead.

Shehbaz Sharif also has the advantage that he has a good relationship with the establishment and prefers to work with all stakeholders. On the other hand, Nawaz Sharif has a history of bad relations with the establishment.
