China urges Pakistan to allow its own security for their workers in Pakistan: report

China is pushing Islamabad to permit its security staff to protect thousands of its citizens working in the country, sources have told Reuters.

On October 6, an explosion near Karachi Airport killed two Chinese engineers and injured 11 people, an attack that was seen as a major security breach.

The banned outfit Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) had taken responsibility for the blast.

Recent attacks and security failures have reportedly angered China, prompting Pakistan to initiate formal negotiations for a joint security management system.

Reuters spoke to five Pakistani security and government sources with direct knowledge of the previously unreported negotiations and demands on condition of anonymity, as the talks are sensitive, and reviewed a written proposal sent by China to Pakistan.

One official stated: “They (Chinese) want to bring in their own security,” adding that Pakistan had not agreed so far.

The source and two other officials said there was a consensus on setting up a joint security management system and that Pakistan was amenable to Chinese officials sitting in on security meetings and coordination.

However, neither China nor Pakistan officially confirmed the off-record talks.

Privately, Beijing has expressed frustration. At one recent meeting, the Chinese side provided evidence that Pakistan had failed to follow security protocols agreed on twice in recent months, three officials told Reuters.

“It was a grave security breach,” admitted one of the officials investigating the bombing.

Speaking at a press conference on November 11, Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar confirmed that during an intelligence-based operation, one of the masterminds of the suicide bombing, Javed alias Sameer, and his accomplice Gul Nisa, were arrested at CD Highway near Umar Goth Chowk, Karachi, while riding a bike. The two had entered Karachi via Hub.

“An investigation revealed Javed’s direct involvement in the suicide bombing, while Gul Nisa had facilitated [him],” Lanjar added.

“On Oct 6, the terrorist checked out of the hotel. He later picked up his other accomplices near Jail Chowrangi in the vehicle that would be used in the attack. They circled the airport and then returned to a park near the Marriott Hotel.”

“From there, they recorded the suicide attacker’s final video on a mobile phone and sent it to their BLA commander. At around 9:30 pm, they reached Karachi Airport. The suicide attacker and one of his accomplices remained in the vehicle while the third accomplice entered Karachi Airport,” Sindh Home Minister said.

Quetta railway station blast leaves 24 dead

At least 24 people were killed and 46 injured on Saturday morning in a bomb blast at Quetta Railway Station.

Speaking to journalists, Quetta Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Operations Mohammad Baloch said that the explosion seemed to be a “suicide blast,” adding that an investigation is underway to probe the nature of the blast.

“The blast took place inside the railway station when the Peshawar-bound express was about to leave for its destination at 9 am,” Mohammad Baloch stated.

According to the SSP Operations, around 150-200 passengers were present at the Quetta railway station when the blast occurred.

Balochistan government spokesperson Shahid Rind confirmed the casualties and revealed that several people were wounded in the explosion, out of whom ten were in critical situation.

Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti condemned the attack and ordered an immediate investigation of the powerful explosion, noting that terrorists who target innocent people do not deserve any sympathy.

Meanwhile, the banned and militant outfit Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) claimed responsibility for the explosion.

Earlier, train service had been suspended in the province on August 26, following a blast carried out by the BLA, which destroyed the railway bridge between Kolpur and Mach.

Nine people, including five school-going children, had also been killed, and 29 were injured in a blast near girls schools in Mastung, Balochistan district on November 1.

Seven people, including five schoolchildren, a police officer and a passerby, were killed in a blast on Friday morning near Civil Hospital Chowk in Mastung, Balochistan.

“So far, seven individuals have been martyred, including five school students, and 17 others have sustained injuries,” Kalat Division Commissioner Naeem Bazai confirmed to the press.

According to the commissioner, the blast occurred at around 8:35 am near a high school for girls at Mastung Civil Hospital Chowk.

“It appears that an IED [improvised explosive device] attached to a motorcycle was detonated near a police mobile,” he said.

Mastung District Police Officer (DPO) Miandad Umrani said the explosion damaged a police van and multiple auto-rickshaws present near the site of the attack.

District Headquarters Hospital (DHQ) Medical Superintendent Nisar Ahmad Baloch told a private media outlet that 30 injured, mostly schoolchildren, were currently being treated at the DHQ as well as Nawab Hospital in Mastung.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif and Balochistan Chief Minister (CM) Sarfraz Bugti have condemned the blast.

“We will avenge the murder of innocent children and people. The menace of terrorism can only be fought with unity,” CM Bugti wrote.
