In a startling revelation, a candidate who reportedly failed matriculation exams back in 1988 managed to obtain a passing result in 2024, raising questions on the integrity of educational records and administrative oversight.
The candidate, originally from Karachi, appeared in matriculation board’s records from 1988 to have failed the exam. However, documents show that the same individual was later issued a degree, indicating a successful completion.
According to official records, degrees were issued to students who had previously failed under the signature of Secretary Matric, Naveed Gujjar.
In response to inquiries, he stated that a fake certificate of matriculation was issued to the candidate and that he has nothing to do with it.
The nationwide committee of chairmen of the educational boards IBCC) on Thursday approved the implementation of the new “10-point grading system” at the matric and inter levels across the country, Express Tribune has reported.
IBCC Secretary Ghulam Ali Malah while talking to the media outlet said, “Existing grading system at the inter [grade XII] and matric [grade X] levels is being abolished and replaced by a 10-point system across the country by 2025.”
The term “F” or “Fail” would be replaced with a new term “U” meaning unsatisfactory, Malah said. He added that students getting marks between 96 per cent and 100 per cent will get an A-plus, where as an A-minus will be given for 91 per cent to 95 per cent marks. Other grades format will include “A” or “Remarkable” for 85-90 per cent marks; “B++” or “Excellent” for 80-85 per cent marks; “B+” or “Very Good” for 75-80 per cent marks; “B” or “Good” for 70-75per cent marks; “C” or “Fair” for 60-70 per cent marks; “D” or “Satisfactory” for 50-60% marks; “E” or “Sufficient” for 40-50 per cent marks.
The meeting also decided that matric and intermediate examination will be held in April and May.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) led Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government’s new Education Minister Akbar Ayub hasn’t studied beyond matric, Geo News has reported.
In a major cabinet reshuffle made by the KP chief minister (CM) on Saturday, Ayub was handed reins of the education department. He was earlier serving as the minister for communication and works department.
According to reports, KP provincial assembly’s official website shows that Ayub’s educational qualification is matric. The same has been listed in an affidavit submitted by the education minister, which also states his occupation as a businessman and a landlord.

Speaking to Geo News, the minister said that his education qualification “did not matter”. Ayub said he was experienced in educational and administrative affairs.
Backing his statement, KP Information Minister Shaukat Yousafzai said Ayub had vast administrative experience.
“It does not matter what degree he holds,” said Yousafzai. “He has studied from a reputable institute and is a capable man.”
In a separate video message, Yousafzai said one should not question Ayub’s capabilities solely due to the fact that he had not studied beyond matriculation level.
“He left for Canada to pursue the construction business while he was in grade 12,” said the information minister. “He is a skilled man and we should extract benefit from his experience and capabilities.”
Yousafzai said the education minister could speak to foreign diplomats and dignitaries as “his English is the best”. He said since education had been bifurcated into two parts, Ayub was given charge of the elementary education, not secondary.
“He has to run an institute and for that, he has ample experience in the past as a minister,” he said.
A day earlier, the board announced names of the top position holders. Danish Athar clinched the overall first position in both sciences and humanities groups by scoring 1,092 marks out of 1,100.
Anoosha Zikriya, Syed Hassan Abbas and Muhammad Affan Amir shared the second position with 1,090 marks each and Saba Iqbal and Saira Hayyat shared the third position.
A prize-distribution ceremony in the honour of the position holders will also be held today at a local hotel where Provincial Minister for Higher Education Raja Yasir Humayun Sarfraz will be the chief guest.
