    Court rejects Khan’s bail petition in May 9 cases

    An anti-terrorism court has turned down the bail petition of incarcerated former Prime Minister Imran Khan in three cases related to the May 9 violent protests, GEO News reported on Tuesday.

    Judge Khalid Arshad of Lahore ATC announced the reserved verdict after hearing Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) founder bail pleas in the May 9 violent protest cases.

    The riots occurred last year after Imran Khan was arrested in a corruption case.

    Several PTI supporters attacked multiple state buildings, including Jinnah House Lahore and GHQ Pakistan Army Rawalpindi.

    The incarcerated former Prime Minister was ousted from office through a no-confidence motion in April 2022, and currently, he is in Adiala jail facing corruption and terrorism cases.  
     
    Imran Khan also secured relief in multiple cases, including a £190 million reference and the Toshakhan case. However, he will remain behind bars due to his conviction in the Iddat case.

    Imran Khan acquitted in two more May 9 cases

    The district and session court in Islamabad acquitted Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan in two more cases related to May 9 violence, ARY News reported on Thursday.

    Judicial Magistrate Omar Shahab announced the decision on two May 9 cases registered against PTI founder at Shahzad town police station.

    The court cleared the former prime minister in both cases due to insufficient evidence. The prominent lawyers Mirza Aim Beg and Naeem Panjootha were representing Khan in both cases. 

    An unofficial person registered the FIR against Imran Khan and falsely accused him under Section 109, but Khan’s lawyers pointed out that the evidence is not sufficient to support the charge.

    However, Imran Khan’s lawyer and PTI leader Naeem Panjootha told the court that Khan’s sentence in the Toshakhana case has been suspended, but the court has yet to announce on the illegal marriage case and the cypher case.

    Fawad Chaudhry to be investigated in relation to May 9 cases

    Lahore police decided to involve former federal minister Fawad Chaudhry in an ongoing investigation linked to vandalism that occurred on May 9 last year. The Express TRIBUNE reported on Wednesday. 

    The police said in their statement that they will investigate the former federal minister as the detained people in the May 9 cases gave statements against him. The investigation will be based on evidence provided by detained individuals.

    Police officials also stated that although Fawad Chaudhry has interim bail in all cases but they can include the former Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader in probe for May 9 vandalism case.

    Fawad’s involvement will be examined in Case No. 97/23, filed at the Sarwar Road police station, as well as in Case No. 366/23 registered in Model Town. Besides, he will be incorporated into the investigation of Case No. 103/23, lodged at the Sarwar Road police station.

    The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has sent a notice to the interior secretary and other officials for not providing correct information regarding cases filed against Fawad Chaudhry.

    Rawalpindi police arrest Imran Khan in GHQ attack case

    Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder and former prime minister Imran Khan was arrested on Tuesday in connection with the GHQ attack case pertaining to May 9 riots.

    The former prime minister was summoned by an Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Rawalpindi on Tuesday in connection with the GHQ attack case. Khan is already behind bars in cipher and graft cases.

    However, Imran Khan attended the hearing via video link, as he could not be produced in court by Adiala jail police.

    During the hearing, police officials asked for the custody in May 9 cases, but ATC Judge Malik Aijaz Asif declined the request.

    The ATC judge instructed the police to investigate the PTI founder in Adila jail.

    The development occurred days after the arrest of PTI’s senior leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi in the May 9 case after getting bail in cipher case from the Supreme Court (SC).

    Earlier, a local court in Rawalpindi approved Shah Mahmood Qureshi’s 14-day remand in connection with May 9 cases and sent him to Adiala jail.
