    Women and underage rioters won’t be tried in military courts

    The federal government has decided not to try women and underage suspects involved in the violent protests that sparked after the May 9 arrest of Pakistan Tehreek Insaf Chairman Imran Khan. Geo has reported
    Nationwide riots erupted on May 9 following the arrest of the PTI chairman in the £190 million Al-Qadir trust case, which left at least eight people dead and several injured, leading authorities to arrest thousands of PTI workers.

    During the protest, the protesters attacked civil and military installations, including the corps commander’s house (Jinnah House) in Lahore Cantt and General Headquarters (GHQ).

    Now, according to sources of Geo News, the cases of women and underage protesters who are involved in the attack on a military installation, will be tried in civil courts.

    Trials of civilians have not started yet in military courts, Supreme Court told

    Attorney General of Pakistan (AGP) Mansoor Usman Awan confirmed on Tuesday that military trials of civilians had not started yet.
    The AGP gave the statement during the fourth hearing of the petitions filed against the cases of civilians in military trials.

    During Monday’s hearing, Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Umar Ata Bandial asked for reassurance from the AGP that no such trial will be tried until the case is heard in the court.

    The AGP confirmed that trials of civilians have not started yet.
    Earlier, Petitions against military trials were filed by former Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Jawwad S. Khawaja, Aitzaz Ahsan, Karamat Ali, and former Prime Minister Imran Khan.

    The Director General of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Major General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, addressed an important press conference on Monday afternoon.

    While talking about self-accountability in the army, DG ISPR revealed that three officers including a Lieutenant General have been sacked and due actions have been completed against another 15 officers, including three Major General and seven Brigadiers.

    “As of now, a granddaughter of a retired four-star general, son-in-law of a retired four-star star general, wife of a retired three-star general,l and wife and son-in-law of a retired two-star general are facing the process of accountability due to irrefutable evidence,” he said.

    “So far, the investigation has revealed that the May 9 tragedy had been planned in the past few months,” said the DG ISPR.

    Stating that no one involved in May 9 riots will be spared, he stressed that the perpetrators will be punished according to the law.

    He further said that currently 102 people are being tried in military courts.

    While answering a question about the masterminds of May 9 events he said, “It would be premature to say definitively who the mastermind is. These are the same people who have influenced the minds of the people against the military.”

  • May 9 riots: National Commission for Human Rights releases fact-sheet on the condition of prisoners

    National Commission for Human Rights (NCHR) has complied a fact sheet on the allegations of torture and sexual abuse of prisoners who were arrested in connection with May 9 riots. The report has been compiled in collaboration with Justice Project Pakistan and Human Rights Commission of Pakistan.

    The fact-sheet read that one third of male prisoners complained about the use of force during arrest. The brief report further added that most prisoners were not told about the grounds of the arrest.

    However, contrary to the allegations made by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan, no female prisoner complained about torture or sexual abuse.

    As per the report, most jails were overcrowded, housing prisoners beyond their official capacity, while most prisoners were unaware of their rights.

    Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said on the floor of the National Assembly on Thursday that the people who have issues with military courts are politically motivated.

    He further said that to avoid conflicts, institutions should not trespass on each other’s boundaries.

    The defence minister remarked that it is very obvious that the people who have issues with military courts have political motives, adding that these types of crimes have not happened before in the country’s history. He has also said that the attackers involved in the May 9 riots are political activists.

    Mentioning that the attackers were brainwashed by their leaders to attack military installations, he further said that I would tell the judiciary to leave a legacy if they wanted to be remembered.

    May 9 riots: Court orders completion of suspects’ identification parade within 48 hours

    Lahore High Court (LHC) Multan bench on Friday directed all session judges and special courts to complete the identification parade process of suspects involved in May 9 riots within the next 48 hours.

    Justice Tariq Saleem Shaikh issued a 13-page decision on the petition of Citizen Muhammad Ramzan, stating that the petitioner has been waiting in jail for identification parade since May 25.

    Delay in identification parade is against fundamental human rights, Justice Shaikh further said in the decision, adding that the registrar should send a copy of the decision to all the session judges and IG Punjab.

    The court has said that the delay in the identification parade makes the whole process doubtful and it is a violation of basic human rights and fair trial.

    On May 9, supporters of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and law enforcement agencies engaged in violent clashes as protests to mark the arrest of former Prime Minister turned into riots.

    Budget, May 9 top agendas during PM-COAS meeting

    Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Asim Munir met Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday at PM house, right after the presentation of the federal budget, DAWN has reported.

    The National Assembly later passed a resolution right after the meeting that demands instant prosecution of the miscreants involved in the May 9 attack on state and military installations under the Pakistan Army Act, 1952.

    No communication about the meeting has been released but according to sources close to the Prime Minister, he did meet the COAS.

    Reportedly, the Geberal said that there will be no mercy for the planners, instigators and motivators involved in the May 9 riots and their cases will be tried under the Army Act. The meeting between the PM and COAS is also considered important in the backdrop of the recent fiscal budget presentation.

    In a tweet, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif said, despite the domestic and global obstacles, budget 2023-2024 promises to turn things around and shape an unobstructed path for the country.

    The National Assembly on Monday adopted a resolution demanding action against May 9 rioters under the Army Act.

    The resolution was moved by Defence Minister Khawaja Asif.

    The resolution demanded that all individuals  involved in May 9 riots must immediately face legal repercussions, adding that members of the same party and its leaders were separating themselves from May 9 events.

    “Across the world, the right of inquiry against people involved in incidents such as attacks on military installations lie with the army. In Pakistan too, laws and constitutional protection against such elements exist,” it added.

    “Therefore, an inquiry should be initiated without any delay against all the people involved in these incidents and they should be punished under the Pakistan Army Act, 1952,” the resolution read.

    The Inspector General Police (IGP) Punjab, Dr Usman Anwar, said in a press conference on Sunday that the police have data of the calls of March 8 and 9 May, adding that the call data shows similarities between both events, helping police in arresting those responsible for the riots.

    PTI claimed that Ali Bilal (Zillay Shah) died during police custody when he was captured during a crackdown on party workers and supporters protesting near Imran Khan’s Zaman Park residence on March 8.

    “We have records of each call made during these incidents and we are presenting them as evidence in court,” he added.

    He further said that law enforcement agencies had solid evidence that PTI leaders, in­cluding Dr. Yasmin Rashid, were in­volved in May 9 attacks and the tar­gets were pre-determined. “The May 9 incidents were carried out at a specific time as planned, the targets for the attacks were pre-determined”.

    While denying the accusations of PTI women being mistreated in jail, the IG said, “only lady police officers had interrogated women in custody.”

    In an explosive speech, Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) Senior Vice President Maryam Nawaz attacked Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan, calling him the mastermind of the May 9 riots.

    While addressing a public gathering in Vehari, Maryam condemned the May 9 incident, saying, “My heart cries tears of blood over the events that happened on May 9. I dedicate this rally to martyrs and their parents, children and widows.”

    She alleged that the “terrorist plan” was hatched in Zaman Park, Imran Khan’s Lahore residence where he has been living for the past several months. “The May 9 attacks were pre-planned,” she alleged.

    “Why didn’t the groups of people attack the shopping centre in front of the Corps Commander’s House?” she questioned, accusing “mastermind” Khan of instructing the protesters about which places to attack.

    Talking about the recent string of PTI leaders leaving the party, she told Imran Khan that the “game is over”.
