Sri Lanka considering exporting 100,000 monkeys to China

Sri Lanka’s Agriculture Minister, Mahinda Amaraweera, has instructed officials to examine China’s proposal to import 100,000 toque macaque monkeys, which are native to Sri Lanka and classified as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

The monkeys will be displayed in over 1,000 Chinese zoos with the minister suggesting that Sri Lanka might be able to meet the request due to the large macaque population in the country.

As per a Sri Lankan news portal, a meeting was held on Tuesday to discuss the possibility of sending monkeys to China under the first phase of the programme. Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera led the meeting, which was attended by officials from the Agriculture Ministry, Department of National Zoological Gardens, and Department of Wildlife Conservation.

During the meeting, it was revealed that the current monkey population in Sri Lanka has grown to almost 3 million and that the monkeys were causing significant damage to local crops.

Despite Sri Lanka’s ban on almost all live animal exports, the country is currently considering fulfilling China’s request for macaque monkeys, as the country grapples with its worst economic crisis.
Sri Lanka is also looking to fulfill China’s request due to the fact that Beijing is one of Sri Lanka’s major bilateral lenders.

’Gang war’: Two monkeys kill 250 dogs in a revenge attack in India

Two monkeys killed nearly 250 dogs in a revenge attack after a pack of dogs killed an infant monkey, which took place in a village of Maharashtra, India.

It was reported that the Nagpur Forest Department team captured two monkeys for spreading terror in a region for at least a couple of months. The authorities will release the monkeys in a nearby forest.

According to eyewitnesses, the monkeys were killing dogs for the last couple of months in Lavool village. Monkeys used to roam around in a region to catch dogs as soon as they saw and kidnapped them. They took dogs to a certain height and threw them (dogs) either from rooftops or trees.

The villagers reported Dharur’s Forest Department when monkeys attacked school-going children. Such incidents created panic among people.

However, an official from the department said, “This [the killing of an infant monkey by dogs] is said to have enraged the monkeys, who in retaliation are killing the puppies of dogs as per local residents. But we do not have any proof to back up this theory. It’s animal behaviour and we cannot ascertain why they are behaving like this.”

Meanwhile, netizens started circulating amusing memes on ‘monkeys vs dogs gang war’ on social media.

Two rival monkey gangs clashed on a street in Thailand’s Lopburi in a fight over the food near a traffic junction.

The man who recorded the fight, Pong Muangthong, said motorists also tried honking their horns to scatter the monkeys but that only made them angrier.

As a result of this incident, several monkeys were injured. There was blood on the road.

“Monkey battles in Lopburi occur frequently. It’s not strange. It’s about the power struggle, the food fight, the fertilization of the females,” a spokesperson for the Department of National Parks told Matichon.

According to Daily Mail, Covid-19 might be the reason behind the gang war.
