Mathira’s struggles: How society judges single mothers

In a recent interview with Samaa, television host Mathira talked about her difficulties as a single parent after her 2018 divorce, sharing details of how her children have been her biggest source of strength.

Mathira said that her three sons have been her main support, and she had to take on both roles of a mother and father while raising them. “When the father is no longer around, the mother has to take on his role. It’s not a woman’s job to be a man, but when she does, she becomes stronger than a man,” she said.

The host pointed out unfairness in society, noting differences in how single mothers and fathers are treated. “When a single mother does something, people wonder who helped her instead of praising her. When a man does something good, we appreciate him, but when a woman runs a household, she faces many accusations,” Mathira lamented. She added that it gets very tough, and then she can’t be a good mother or take on the role of a father.

The television star spoke about the severe depression she went through after her third pregnancy, a struggle that society mostly ignores, sometimes shames and dismisses as unimportant. “I think now people are learning that depression, including postpartum depression and hormonal changes, is real,” she noted, stressing the need for better understanding of mental health issues.

North Kores’s dictator urges women to give birth to more babies

North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un, famous for his eccentric statements, spoke at the first National Mothers’ Meeting in 11 years held in Pyongyang, emphasising the importance of mothers in preventing a decline in birth rates. He framed it as a collective responsibility to strengthen national power. Kim got emotional during his speech while women in the audience were seen sobbing as well.

Addressing the women as “Dear Mothers”, he pleaded with them to fulfill their role as birth-givers against the rising concerns of a drop in the North Korean birth rate. “Preventing a decline in birth rates and good childcare are all of our housekeeping duties we need to handle while working with mothers,” Kim was quoted as saying by the news agency Reuters at the event for mothers in Pyongyang on Sunday.

He also thanked mothers for their role in strengthening national power.

“I too always think about mothers when I have a hard time dealing with the party and the state’s work,” Kim said.

Experts highlight the unique societal challenges influencing North Korea’s fertility decline, noting Kim Jong Un’s public appearances with his daughter, Ju Ae, as potential efforts to encourage family values.

His pleas reflect the government’s determination to the cause of counterbalance South Korea’s older population.

The United Nations Population Fund estimates that as of 2023, the fertility rate, or the average number of children being born to a woman, stood at 1.8 in North Korea, amid an extended fall in the rate during recent decades.

The decline in fertility has been attributed to various factors, including urbanisation, delayed marriage, and women’s participation in the workforce.
However, North Korea’s birth rate is still higher than most of its neighbours. The fertility rate remains higher than in some of North Korea’s neighbours, which have been grappling with a similar downward trend.

South Korea saw its fertility rate drop to a record low of 0.78 last year, while Japan saw its figure drop to 1.26.

Earlier this year, the Bheega December crooner took to his twitter handle to slam Bollywood filmmaker Karan Johar for plagiarising his famous song Nach Punjaban in his latest film, Jug Jugg Jeeyo.

As soon as the trailer of the upcoming film was out, Abrar shared his statement.

“I have not sold my song Nach Punjaban to any Indian movie and reserve the right to go to court to claim damages. Producers like @karanjohar should not use copy songs. This is my 6th song being copied which will not be allowed at all,” Abrar tweeted.

After a series of unpleasant exchanges between the two entities, Abrar was given the credits for his iconic song Nach Punjaban used in Johar’s Jug Jugg Jeeyo.

Taking to Instagram Story, the well-acclaimed Indian director shared the track’s new version of The Punjaabban Song‘s poster which featured Haq’s name alongside Tanishk Bagchi.

This came after Haq publicly called out the filmmakers for using his famed song without taking his permission or right to it. Also the way they have credited him at the end of the list is also not fair. This should have been done earlier only.

Earlier Dhawan broke his silence on the controversy by stating: “T-series has put out an official statement about this they legally licensed the rights. I think when you have international companies like YouTube and Spotify… When they are playing music they have very strict laws about copyrights. It’s no joke. All the processes have been followed.”
