    Why are women still being pushed back from their right of public transport?

    We’ve heard sleazy men behind anonymous accounts push back against this. We’ve seen boomers roll their eyes every time they see this happen. Now, recently, we’ve had to listen to the unsolicited opinion of Behroze Sabzwari on this issue. Can you guess what causes these men to go into frenzied anger? It’s the ability of a woman to choose independence by taking public transport.

    It is amusing how this country won’t revolt in a political or economic crisis, however, our mard hazarat will unleash hell when a Pakistani woman is walking down the street without a dupatta or even riding a bike. The consistent way women have to fight away unsolicited opinions that drag her in to a box, unable to express her individuality and bound away from walking outside is a by-product of centuries of male entitlement and patriarchal oppression that consider women as inferior beings.

    A few days ago, women had to witness a mansplaining Behroze Sabzwari expressing anger that women shouldn’t wear tight-fitted clothes while riding bikes. “The clothes are not only see through but usually are very tight, women should be fully covered,” said the television veteran who owes his career mostly to women’s writing. It’s shocking that not only does Mr Sabzwari encourage drivers to spend more time oogling women while driving, but also does not take into account how dupattas or abayas can get caught in wheels, potentially causing a dangerous accident.

    Founder of Soul Sisters Pakistan, Kanwal Ahmed, has now jumped in to take back the narrative from men and allow women to express their own choices whether that includes driving motorbikes wearing abayas or refusing to sit sideways. The film maker has posted on Twitter that she wishes for women to stop feeding in to misogynist policing that is making them neglect proper safety while riding bikes on roads, and shared how today she had seen a woman suffer because her dupatta had gotten entangled in the tire of her bike.

    Women soon began to flood the comments with instances of how they had to counter sexism and shame when choosing to ride motorbikes .

    This user shared how even in situations of life and death, a man’s honor is considered more important than a woman’s safety because of how little regard is given to the way women are sitting on motorbikes.

    We need to stop validating male honor and giving it preference to the point that women have to risk the chance of an accident rather than riding motorbikes safely. Women should not be forced into molding themselves according to what men think, and it’s about time the anonymous Bashir’s of the internet back off, let women reclaim the streets wearing whatever they want and ride any vehicle of their choice.

    City Traffic Police Lahore announces free motorcycle riding training for women

    Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Dr Asad Malhi on Tuesday said that the city traffic police are offering free training for motorcycle riding to women under the “Women on Wheels” project.

    Speaking at the “Women on Wheels” initiative ceremony held at Police Lines Qila Gujar Singh, he said that up until now, more than 7,000 women had been trained to drive motorcycles, while the 67th batch of women was under training at the Women on Wheels School at the LOS Rescue Academy.

    The CTO said that motorcycle riding training would be given to women free of cost at Police Lines Qila Gujar Singh from today onward.

    He continued by saying that the goal of the “Women on Wheels” project was to empower women so they could make a meaningful contribution to the development and prosperity of the nation.

    According to Dr Asad Malhi, women’s roles alongside those of males are crucial for societal development, hence it is necessary to implement measures for their welfare and capacity growth.

    Additionally, the CTP established a driving school in Manawan Lines where women received free instruction in motorbike and car operation, according to the CTO, who said that after completing the training programme, the women were also given driving permits.

    According to Dr Asad Malhi, residents can contact Helpline 15 to request admission to driving schools, advice from the Rasta app, or access to CTP’s social media.

    Honda Atlas presented two brand-new motorcycles to Driving School Police Lines Qila Gujar Singh during the ceremony, and the CTO also demonstrated how to operate a motorcycle on a simulator.

    Yamaha has announced a significant price increase for motorcycles effective from August 1, 2022. All variants from the manufacturer, including the YB 125Z, YB 125Z DX, YBR 125, and YBR 125G, have seen price increases.

    It is important to note that this is the fifth price rise for Yamaha motorcycles in Pakistan since the year 2022 started, with the previous increase occurring in June 2022 and costing more than Rs20,000 for each model.

    The Yamaha YB 125Z will now cost Rs273,000 after an increase of Rs18,000, and the Yamaha YB 125Z DX will cost Rs292,000 after a hike of Rs18,000.

    Similarly, the Yamaha YBR 125’s price has increased by Rs19,500 to Rs300,000. After an increase of Rs20,500 for both models, the price of the Yamaha YBR 125G (Black/Red) is now Rs312,500, and the Yamaha YBR 125G (Gray) is now priced at Rs315,500.

    Nevertheless, this was to be expected, and over the course of 2022, Yamaha Motorcycle prices are predicted to rise by several factors, especially in light of the depreciation of the Pakistani Rupee (PKR) against the US dollar and the implementation of the Super Tax on the automotive industry.

    There is little justification for motorcycle manufacturers to raise prices so frequently and by such significant margins as bike manufacturing has been localised by up to 94 per cent in Pakistan.

    The depreciation of the local currency caused price hikes across the board in Pakistan’s auto industry, whether it be for cars or two-wheelers, pushing prices out of reach for an average person.

    Several factors, including burgeoning raw material costs, continuous depreciation of the local currency, and greater freight rates, have forced the Pakistani two-wheeler industry to announce regular price hikes in 2022, putting motorcycles in a price range that is difficult to afford for a remarkable portion of the populace.

    Atlas Honda recently announced a price increase for their motorcycles in the range of Rs3,600-9,000, with the new rates taking effect from June 1, 2022.

    United, Metro, and Road Prince, among other Chinese motorbike manufacturers, have also hiked their two-wheeler prices.

    New prices

    The price of the Honda CD 70 has increased by Rs3,600, to Rs106,500. Similarly, following a Rs4,000 increase, the CD70 Dream model is now available for Rs113,500.

    Following a Rs5,000 price hike, the Pridor variant will now be available for Rs144,900.

    The CG125 and CG125S have had their prices increased by Rs5,000 to Rs168,500 and Rs198,500, respectively.

    The price of the Honda CB125F has been hiked by Rs9,000 from Rs244,900 to Rs253,900.

    The price of the CB150F has been increased to Rs308,900, while the CB150F (red, black) will be available at Rs312,900 starting June 1.

    Since March 2022, Atlas Honda has increased the price of its motorcycles every month.

    The two-wheel market isn’t the only one seeing price increases; car costs have grown by up to 55 percent in the current fiscal year.

    As per industry experts, the increase in motorbike and automobile prices is primarily due to an increase in foreign raw material prices and an increase in freight costs following Covid-19.

    The automobile industry, particularly due to auto-grade steel and plastic resins, is significantly reliant on imports.

    Furthermore, the sector has a low level of localisation, with the majority of parts being imported. As a result, the rupee’s depreciation has an impact on automobile and motorcycle prices.

    CJP distributes motorbikes among female lawyers

    Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Gulzar Ahmed distributed motorbikes among women lawyers on Friday. While giving out the motorcycle-driving training to women lawyers, the CJP encouraged women to ride the bikes adding that this was a good start and that he hoped this practice will continue. He also advised women lawyers to avoid talking during motorcycle-riding.

    Addressing a motorbike distribution ceremony at the Sindh High Court Bar Association, the CJP appreciated the bar association’s efforts for providing a motorbike-driving training opportunity to women advocates.

    He said that although motorbike-riding was dangerous, it was the responsibility of the trainers as well as of women motorbike riders to drive safely and ensure that they did not meet with an accident.

    He said women lawyers kept on talking during the programme and advised them to curb their habit of talking during motorcycle-riding.

     Sindh High Court Chief Justice Ahmed Ali M Sheikh also appreciated the SHCBA and senior lawyers for making arrangements to award motorbikes and training to the women lawyers.

    Salman Sufi, head of Salman Sufi foundation, said that his organisation had given motorbike-riding training to as many as 15,000 women since 2016, and have set a target that his organisation would provide training to 500,000 women by 2025.
