Suspect who ran over activists in Islamabad turns out to be serving lieutenant

In a new development, the driver who crushed two activists of the ‘Save Gaza’ campaign to death on Monday turned out to be a serving lieutenant of Pakistan Army and also the son of a brigadier.

The suspect has been handed over to the Military Police for legal proceedings, the police said on Friday.

Four people, including a police inspector, were also injured as the vehicle ran over the participants of a protest being held just outside the Red Zone in solidarity with Gaza.

Subsequently, a case was registered at the Kohsar police station under sections 322, 337-G, 427 and 279 of the Pakistan Penal Code against the driver.

Police said that the car involved in the accident was registered in the name of the suspect’s father.

After the driver’s arrest, his father reportedly also reached the police station and attempted to influence the police for the release of his son.

However, after the MP and other departments of the army learnt about the incident, they arrived at the police station and took custody of the lieutenant.

‘Pakistan’s international debt should be immediately cancelled’: British MP

United Kingdom (UK) Member of Parliament (MP) Claudia Webbe has called on the international community to cancel Pakistan’s debt as the country’s inflation hits the highest level since 1973.

In a statement on Twitter, Webbe said, “Inflation in Pakistan is at an all-time high at 27 per cent! Pakistan’s international debt should be immediately cancelled – they should instead be given reparations for the climate crisis caused.”

According to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), Pakistan’s Consumer Price Index-based inflation (CPI) climbed by 27.3 per cent on a year-over-year basis in August 2022.

Prior to this statement, she repeatedly urged foreign countries to stand shoulder to shoulder in full solidarity with Pakistan and termed the silence from western countries a “moral crime”.

“We need a global climate tax so that the global rich can be made to pay for the climate damage they cause in the world,” she said.

She also blamed rich countries for the climate crisis and said that they should bear the cost, not Pakistan, as the country is responsible for 1 per cent of global emissions.

On her official Twitter account, she also shared videos of the devasting floods in Pakistan.

Water levels continued to rise on Friday as the overall death toll from the devastating floods has crossed 1,200.

On Thursday, the UK announced an additional £15 million of lifesaving support for flood victims in Pakistan.

More than 33 million people are affected — one in every seven Pakistanis — and reconstruction work will cost more than $10 billion.

United Nations (UN) chief Antonio Guterres called the floods a “climate catastrophe” and launched an appeal for $160 million in emergency funding. Meanwhile, western countries have also donated millions of dollars to Pakistan.

‘I curse you,’ Jaya Bachchan lashes out at the BJP

The actor turned politician MP (Member of Parliament) Jaya Bachchan lost her cool in the Rajya Sabha (Senate) over alleged personal remarks against her in the house.

In the video, Bachchan is seen involved in a verbal spat with the treasury benches. She even accused the chair of not listening to the Opposition and favouring the government.

She alleged that personal remarks were made against her. She argued, “How can they make personal remarks in the House? Aap logon kay burey din aayenge (Your bad days will come soon), I curse you.”

Later, Jugal Lokhandwala, one of the treasury bench MP who apparently made the personal remark told NDTV that he had meant the whole Opposition when he said, “You will not do drama”.

While pointing out the chair presided by Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Bhubaneswar Kalita, Bachchan said, “I don’t want to thank you because I don’t know whether I should remember when you used to walk shouting or today when you are sitting in the chair.”

Samajwadi Party (SP) leader’s remarks came after she was asked to participate in the discussion on the ‘Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances’ Amendment Bill 2021.

When the ruling party lawmaker Rakesh Sinha objected to Bachchan’s remarks against the Chair, things escalated.
