A High Court in Kenya has ordered payment of Rs. 2 crore 17 lakh as damages to the family of slain Pakistani journalist Arshad Sharif, while also declaring his assassination unconstitutional and illegal. It emphasized that his killing was not a case of mistaken identity and held those government institutions named in the petition responsible.
The court also ordered relevant departments to initiate criminal proceedings against the two police officers involved in the shooting, ruling on the petition filed by the journalist’s wife.
The court also found that the victim’s rights were violated by the failure of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) and the Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) to prosecute two police officers for the fatal shooting. It ordered them to conclude the investigation and charge both officers, along with paying ten million local currency in interest until full payment to the petitioner.
In 2022, Pakistani anchor and journalist Arshad Sharif was killed in Kenya on October 23. Subsequently, Kenyan police admitted that Arshad Sharif’s car was mistakenly hit by police bullets.
Officials stated that the involved policemen were initially detained but later reinstated. Following this, Arshad Sharif’s wife Jawaria Siddique filed a petition against the involved police officers in the Kenyan court.
Unknown persons entered a mosque and allegedly tortured and killed the imam in Ajmer, India.
The 30-year-old imam of the mosque, Mohammad Mahir, was allegedly tortured and killed by three masked men, according to Indian media.
Police say that the killing took place on Saturday morning when the Imam was present in the mosque along with a few students. The suspects allegedly entered the mosque and assaulted the imam with sticks and then fled, as per the local police.
The imam succumbed to his injuries in the hospital. The reasons for the murder have not yet been revealed. However, suspects are being identified with the help of the CCTV camera footage of the area.
A case has been registered under Section 302 of the incident. “This is a case of senseless violence, and we are utilising all available technical and investigative resources to identify the perpetrators,” said Ajmer SP Devendra Kumar Bishnoi.
A 17-year-old young man was allegedly killed by his close friend for eating a zinger burger the suspect had ordered for his ‘girlfriend’, the police investigation has concluded in Karachi.
The victim was identified as Ali Kerio, son of Javed Kerio, a Karachi District South sessions judge, while the suspect shooter, Daniyal Nazeer Mir Bahar, is the son of Nazir Ahmed Mir Bahar, a retired Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), reports Danial Syed of Geo News.
As per initial investigations, Daniyal invited his girlfriend, Shazia, to his house — located in Karachi’s Defence Housing Authority (DHA) Phase V — where his friend Ali Kerio and his brother Ahmar Kerio were also present. The suspect ordered two zinger burgers for himself and Shazia, but Ali purportedly consumed half of one burger, which enraged Daniyal so much that he seized his security guard’s assault rifle and opened fire on Ali, who later succumbed to gunshot injuries on the way to the hospital.
The unfortunate incident happened on Feburary 8.
The investigating officer (IO) has submitted the report to higher authorities, implicating the police officer’s son in the crime. Daniyal is currently in jail as the legal proceedings of the case continue.
China will put three minors on trial for allegedly murdering another child, a provincial prosecutor said Monday, in a case that has shocked the nation and sparked public debate over the treatment of juvenile offenders.
The three suspects, all aged under 14 at the time of the murder, are accused of bullying a middle-school classmate surnamed Wang over a long period before killing him last month.
The grim details of the case, in which the killers reportedly buried Wang’s body in an abandoned greenhouse, drew public attention to how the law deals with juveniles accused of serious crimes.
In 2021, China lowered its age of criminal responsibility from 14 to 12 for “special cases” such as inflicting death by “extremely cruel means”.
The Hebei case is thought to be one of the first to apply the lower age limit.
The provincial prosecutor said Monday it had received a police request last month to criminally try the suspects, surnamed Zhang, Li and Ma.
It said it had concluded that the three were between 12 and 14 when they “intentionally committed murder, causing the death of the victim Wang”.
“The circumstances were serious and they should be held criminally responsible,” the provincial office said, adding that the country’s top public prosecutor had reviewed the decision.
“While handling cases strictly in accordance with the law, the procuratorial organs will… further strengthen the prevention and treatment of juvenile crimes,” the provincial prosecutor continued.
Under Chinese law, murder is punishable by imprisonment or the death penalty.
A man from Lodhran has allegedly killed his pregnant wife and one-and-a-half-year-old daughter during a domestic dispute.
The unfortunate double murder took place in Massa Kotha, Kahror Pakka Tehsil of Lodhran.
The police said that the accused, Mohammad Irfan had an argument with his pregnant wife Ruqiya Bibi during which she allegedly slapped him on the face after which he strangled her. He then killed his one-and-a-half-year-old daughter Amina by placing a pillow over her mouth, reports Geo.
The victim Ruqiya was married to Irfan for four years. She was four months pregnant with their second child at the time of her demise.
The bodies were transported to Tehsil Headquarters Hospital for post-mortem examination. Meanwhile, Irfan was apprehended on-site, while police initiated a thorough investigation into the matter. The cloth used in the murder, pillow, and other evidences were recovered from the crime scene as well.
Muhammad Irfan used to work as a mason in the nearby neighborhood, where he would plaster walls with cement. Around 10 days ago, he expelled his wife from the house after beating and assaulting her. Subsequently, the mother and daughter went to stay with the woman’s father in the neighbourhood of Busti Aaroo Wala, as per The Express Tribune.
Following social pressure, the suspect brought them back home, according to the preliminary investigation.
Upon the request of the victim’s father-in-law, Muhammad Islam, police station Saddar has initiated action against the accused.
The police has vowed that legal proceedings will be pursued rigorously to ensure justice for the victims, Ruqiya Bibi and Amina.
In a significant legal development, Additional Sessions Judge-II Mohammad Jameel has handed down death sentences to two seminary students and life imprisonment to another for their involvement in the brutal murder of a young teacher over false blasphemy accusations.
Public prosecutors Tanseer Ali and Haji Shakeel Advocate appeared on behalf of the prosecution, while Asad Aziz Advocate represented the accused.
The judge imposed a fine of Rs2 million each on the convicts. He imposed Rs1 million fine on the girl given a life term for being a juvenile.
According to a police report, on March 29, 2022, three female students of Jamia Islamia Falah Al-Banat located in Anjumabad area on the Dera-Multan Road within the limits of the cantonment police station had slaughtered a young female teacher of their madressah for allegedly committing blasphemy.
The initial investigation revealed that the accused students assaulted Safoora Bibi with a stick at the seminary gate before fatally slitting her throat. Their motivation stemmed from a purported dream shared by one of the students, suggesting that the teacher had committed blasphemy and that her killer would be rewarded in paradise.
Both the perpetrators and the victim hailed from the Mehsud tribe of South Waziristan and were residing in the Anjumabad area.
Following the gruesome incident, Zahid, an uncle of the slain teacher, was informed by the seminary administration about her murder. Upon reaching the scene, he discovered his niece’s tortured and lifeless body abandoned in the street.
Subsequently, the police apprehended the three students and recovered knives and sticks from their possession.
A woman in the Ghazi Tehsil of Haripur allegedly strangled her minor nephew and threw his body into a well over a property dispute. She has been arrested by the police along with two accomplices, reports Dawn.
The boy, Abdul Moeed, 8, a student of grade III, went to school on Feb 21 but didn’t return home. The family searched for the missing boy, but could not find any clue to his whereabouts, informing the police.
As per the initial investigation conducted by the police, the suspect, Abida Shaheen, was identified by the police upon investigation of her mobile phone record. She disclosed that she strangled Moeed with the help of two accomplices, Waseem and Mohammad Akhtar, and then threw his body into a well in the village.
After her confession, the police recovered the body from the well and shifted it to Ghazi Tehsil Headquarters Hospital for autopsy.
A criminal case was registered against the woman and the accomplices under sections 201, 202, and 302/34 of the Pakistan Penal Code.
The motive behind the boy’s murder was a property dispute between two brothers – the husband of the accused woman and the boy’s father – the police said.
The killer of seven-year-old Abaan Mazhar has been arrested in the Federal B area of Karachi and in a shocking turn of events, he is the cousin of the victim.
According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Central Zeeshan Siddiqui, the arrested suspect Sufyan is between 14 and 15 years old and he is the cousin of the deceased Abaan and lived with him.
The police informed Geo News that the suspect said that Abaan used to complain to his father about him, leading to the older boy getting scolded many times.
The accused killer said in his statement, “I made a mistake”.
On the day of the incident, he took Abaan to the park from a back street and killed him inside the bushes at Dhobi Ghat.
Sufyan then washed the knife and kept it in the kitchen.
The police are still investigating the matter.
In an exclusive footage obtained by Geo News, it can be seen that the cousin was taking Abaan along with him while the little boy was strolling totally at ease holding his hand.
Regarding this, SSP Central Zeeshan Siddiqui said that two teams were working on this high-profile case. The accused was put on the suspect list on the first day, but being a family member, it was difficult to arrest him immediately.
Previously, the body of a seven-year-old boy, Abaan Mazhar, was found in bushes in the Federal B Area in Karachi on Wednesday afternoon.
The boy, whose throat had been slit with a sharp instrument, was found within the limits of the Yousuf Plaza police station near the Cardio Hospital Federal B Area Block 16. Station House Officer (SHO) Shahid Rao told The News that around 3:30 pm, a call was received by Madadgar-15 about an injured boy found in bushes.
A police team rushed to the location in Federal B Area Block-16 and shifted Abaan Mazhar to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. SHO Rao said the boy was alive when he was found and when people heard him screaming, they immediately contacted the Madadgar-15 hotline.
Witnesses saw the child lying injured, trying to speak but was unable to do so. They added that they had not seen any suspect near the boy when they found him.
Abhan was a resident of Federal B Area Block 16. He was a student of second grade and the second of three brothers. According to his family, he had left home two hours ago. They maintained that the family had no enmity with anyone.
SHO Rao said they had talked to Mazhar, the aggrieved father, who said his son studied in a private school in the area and as he worked in a private firm, he had hired a private person to pick up and drop his son from school.
The father also said that as per the daily routine, Abaan had returned from school at 2 pm but after a few minutes, someone knocked on the door of his residence and the boy again left the house. It was at around 3:30 pm, the family received the information about the boy’s death. The father told the police that he had no enmity with anyone and he did not know who had killed his son.
The post-mortem report revealed that the throat of the minor boy was slit with a sharp weapon, while no evidence of abuse was found, reports ARY News.
Samanabad DSP Asghar Mehdi told the media that the child died on his way to the hospital. He added that a woman living in a nearby flat first saw the child and shouted for help.
The police has been making efforts to obtain CCTV footage. A case has been registered and investigations are underway.
A kidnapped 22-year-old MPhil graduate, Talha Arshad, was found fatally shot in the head, despite his family allegedly having paid Rs2.5 million in ransom to his abductors. His grieving family staged a protest demonstration at Rafiq Shah Chowk against the police after placing the body on the spot.
The victim, a resident of Mohalla Telianwala, had recently completed his MPhil from the University of Agriculture, Faisalabad. On the day he went missing he left home on a motorcycle on January 17 but did not return.
Upon a lawyer’s intervention, the police registered a kidnapping case on January 18, filed by Talha’s brother Irfan Arshad.
The abductors had sent a video of Talha tied with a rope, through WhatsApp on January 21, demanding a ransom of Rs10 million for his release. Despite the family sending Rs2.5 million to the cryptocurrency account specified by the kidnappers, Talha was not released, reports The Express Tribune.
However, on Wednesday, Talha’s tortured body, locked in a suitcase, was discovered in a well near an upscale neighborhood.
Kamran Arshad, the victim’s brother, alleged that the police had acted as silent spectators when the victim’s phone was active on January 21 and 23. The police reportedly found the location of the deceased’s mobile phone in Bahawalnagar and Donga Bonga, initiating searches in the areas. The DPO’s spokesperson Zahid Rasool said the police were actively engaged in the matter, collaborating with the victim’s family.
In response to protesters’ demands, the SHO was removed from the local police station and an inquiry against him initiated.
The police’s efforts to trace the suspects were reportedly hindered as the perpetrators used VPN to conceal their location.
A 20-years-old man jumped from the tenth floor of a building in Defence B area of Lahore, killing himself instantly.
Syed Musa was part of a group of about 20 boys and girls who were partying in a flat. Musa may have jumped in a state of intoxication, reports PNN.
According to 24 Channel, Syed Musa had a fight with a girl during the party and then he jumped off from the fifth storey of a flat in a residential building, located at Penta Square in Defence Housing Authority (DHA) Phase 5 in Lahore. The disagreement escalated and in the heat of the argument, Syed Musa dashed towards the balcony and jumped off from the fifth floor.
However, Express Tribune reported that whether it was an accident, murder, or a suicide, it is unclear. Musa’s father has registered a case of murder with the police.
Syed Musa was a resident of Islamabad but was a student of B.Sc in Lahore’s LUMS University.
Police have detained all the participants in the party and started an investigation.
