Noor murder case timeline: Different media reports state different stories

Over the last few days, the news has been inundated with the different versions and revelations in relation to the murder of Noor Mukadam.

Here’s a list of the different versions of the same story.

    1.Zahir Jaffer’s confession:

Reportedly, Zahir Jaffer has confessed to the murder of Noor Mukadam. Police also gathered video evidence of Noor being tortured by Zahir.

The accused made the confession during interrogation but has not given a reason for murdering Noor. Dawn, The Express Tribune, ARY News, Dunya have reported that Zahir Jaffer, the prime suspect in the murder of Noor, confessed to killing her before the investigators during his interrogation. Sources said the prime suspect has repeatedly changed his reasoning for committing the brutal crime.

However, Geo News and Samaa have not reported on the confession yet.

    2.CCTV footage of the incident:

All news outlets have confirmed that the Islamabad police have also found video evidence of him torturing Noor on his mobile phone, as well as CCTV footage of the incident.

    3.Noor seeking driver’s help:

Only two media organisations reported the story of Noor seeking help from her driver while being held as a hostage at Zahir Jaffer’s house.

Noor Mukadam asked her driver to arrange Rs700,000 and bring it to the house of Zahir Jaffer, the main accused in her murder, Noor’s driver told Geo News.

The Express Tribune reported, the victim’s family reportedly informed the investigation team that Noor had instructed her driver to bring Rs700,000 to the accused’s house. However, the investigation team said no money has been recovered yet. A senior police officer added that there was no confirmation of the money being withdrawn from the victim’s account, from her home, or from any other relatives. However, Geo news says that the driver collected three lakh rupees from his own resources, friends, and acquaintances.

No other major news outlet has run this story.

    4.Crime Scene:

All major news outlets reported that a guard at the house of Zahir Jaffer saw Noor Mukadam trying to escape as she jumped off the balcony. When she jumped off the balcony, she landed on the Air Conditioner Unit ( Condenser). Zahir too jumped off from the balcony and grabbed her. The guard tried to help her but Zahir grabbed her by her hair and took her back into her room and locked the door.

BBC Urdu reported that Noor jumped out of the ‘Roshandan‘ [a small window].

BBC Urdu, Dawn, and The Express Tribune added that Noor hid in the guard’s room after finding the gate locked, adding that later the accused broke into the room and dragged her back into the house.

Geo News did not report Noor hiding in the guard’s room.

    5.Presence of friends:

Editor of The Nation Salman Masood, mentioned that Zahir brutally killed Noor and chopped off her head from the body while the Therapy Works team and a group of mutual friends tried to enter his room.

Dawn reported that the SSP Rehman further said her [Noor’s] friends reached the house of the accused, but he refused to let them enter, adding that he remained on the balcony, brandishing weapons and hurling abuses at them. One of the friends informed the girl’s father while another friend called the police.

However, as per Geo News,  a neighbour had gone to the Kohsar Police station to inform them and not a friend. By the time the police reached, the team of Therapy Works had tied up Zahir.

    6. When did Noor go to Zahir’s house:

Editor of The Nation Salman Masood and Geo News reported that Noor was detained for two days at Zahir’s house.

Other media outlets have not reported the duration of stay.

    7. Reason for murder:

The reason for murder has yet not been confirmed.

However, Geo News reported that Zahir called his parents before the murder and told them that Noor has refused to marry him.

Meanwhile, ARY News reported that allegedly Zahir in his statement said that he killed Noor for cheating on him

    Recent update on #JusticeForNoor case:

The parents of Zahir Zakir Jaffer — a key suspect in Noor Mukadam’s murder — on Tuesday moved a bail petition in a district and sessions court in Islamabad against their detention. Admitting the petition, the court issued a notice to the police and set July 30 as the date for the hearing.

Noor took three lakh rupees from driver, police say money not recovered

Noor Mukadam left her house at 9:15pm on Sunday (July 18) and reached Zahir’s house at 10pm. Noor called her driver Khalil the next morning (Monday, July 19) at 9.50am and asked him to arrange Rs700,000 and bring it to Zahir Jaffer’s house, reports Geo News.

As per Geo News, the driver told Noor that he could not arrange such a large sum of money. Noor told him that it was important that he brings it and asked him to take it from a friend or arrange it from his acquaintances. However, Khalil said that he could only arrange Rs300,000.

“When I called Noor, she said she can’t come out and that I hand over the money to the cook,” her driver told Geo. He then handed the money over to the cook.

As per Express Tribune, a senior police officer said that there was no confirmation of the money being withdrawn from the victim’s account, from her home, or from any other relatives.

The driver also revealed to Geo News that when Noor called him for the first time, she told to inform her parents that she was going to Lahore.

When Khalil went inside the house to inform Noor’s parents, her mother was already talking about the same thing with her husband. Noor’s father was asking why she was going to Lahore when it was Eid the next day, the driver said.

He added that after hearing the conversation between Noor’s parents, he realised they already knew what Noor had asked him to tell them and so he left without saying anything.

According to the investigating sources, Noor was in touch with her mother. Noor also spoke to her mother over the phone the day she was murdered.

When Geo News contacted the police about the driver’s statement and asked about a possible kidnapping and ransom, they replied that the case is under investigation.

  • ‘I leave it in Allah’s hands, I leave it in Allah’s hands’: Noor’s mother breaks down at funeral

‘I leave it in Allah’s hands, I leave it in Allah’s hands’: Noor’s mother breaks down at funeral

During Noor Mukadam’s funeral, her mother leaned on her daughter’s face and said, “I leave it in Allah’s hands, I leave it in Allah’s hands.” She kept repeating these words as she broke down during the last rights of her daughter, reports BBC Urdu.

According to the report, the scenes at Noor Mukadam’s funeral were the same as when someone leaves the world. There were tents on the porch, outside. Men and women were in the drawing-room.

Noor’s mother was told much later what really transpired and how Noor died. She would ask if she [Noor Mukadam] had been shot, and everyone would say yes.

Noor’s father, former Pakistani diplomat Shaukat Mukadam, met everyone with great patience but tears began to roll down his eyes as he met the people who had come to pay their condolences to the family.

The friends who were present at the funeral were devasted and some of them told the BBC that Noor would have called for help many times but she was a soft-spoken person and her voice might not have been audible to others.

Shaukat Mukadam, while talking to the media earlier in the day said, “Zahir Jaffer is a person of a criminal mindset.”

“This is not a case where the suspect escaped. He was caught and caught with a weapon,” Mukadam said.

“My daughter was a very sweet and kind-hearted girl. Our family has been crying badly since yesterday,” he said.

“If such a person was employed as the director of a company, he is a registered therapist, his parents, too, must be made part of the investigation,” Mukadam said.

Mukadam said that he has served the country as an ambassador and only seeks justice. He wants justice from the prime minister and the courts.

Prime Minister Imran Khan’s aide Dr Shahbaz Gill went to pay his condolences at Noor Mukadam’s residence. Talking to the media, he urged the Opposition to pay their condolences to the family of the deceased.

He said, “I will urge our courts to not take Noor Mukadam’s case as a usual case and fulfill all the legal procedures in the case.”

“Every Pakistan is extremely saddened by the murder of Noor. Prime Minister Imran Khan has asked Inspector General Islamabad Qazi Jameel-ur-Rehman not to make any concessions while probing the murder of Noor Mukadam,” added Gill.

Gill said that the government is with the family of Noor and justice will be served at all costs.

He said, “Noor can never be brought back, but what can be done is justice.”

Noor Mukadam, 27, was shot and then beheaded, her post mortem report states that she was stabbed several times and then beheaded in Islamabad.

The incident took place on July 20 in F-7/4 in Islamabad, reportedly at the residence of Zahir Jaffer, who was arrested for Noor’s murder.

“Everyday I wake up and I just can’t believe my sister is gone,” says Moiz, sobbing.

Her brother added that Mayra had dreams and she wanted to help the poor. “She was a caring person,” he said.

Muhammad Zulfiqar, Mayra’s father with tears in his eyes questioned, ” What have these terrible people done to her? Why have they behaved so awfully? What wrong did she ever do ?”

With eyes filled with pain and tears rolling down his cheeks, Zulfiqar appeals from the premier’s of both Pakistan and London to help him bring justice to his daughter. “I’m running between different offices. The police aren’t listening to me properly,” says Zulfiqar.

In report published by Samaa, Zahid Jadoon, a resident of Lahore, has confessed to murdering a British-Pakistani woman on May 3.

Mayra Zulfiqar, 24, was found in a pool of blood in a flat in Lahore.

The law graduate from London had been threatened by two men who both wanted to marry her but she had rejected both of them.

‘You won’t be able to escape, I will kill you’ says Mayra’s alleged killer

A 24-year-old girl, Mayra Zulfiqar, was found dead in Lahore on Monday. She had recently been threatened by two men who both wanted to marry her.

Prior to her brutal murder, she had asked police for protection after accusing a man of abducting her at gunpoint.

In Pakistan, the chief investigating officer in the murder inquiry told the BBC that police teams were targeting addresses in Islamabad and Lahore. So far no arrest had been made.

In a police report filed before her murder, Ms Zulfiqar named and accused a man of abducting her at gunpoint and attempting to sexually assault her.

She said she managed to run away by alerting people around but the man threatened her, saying “You won’t be able to escape, I will kill you.”

Mayra’s uncle Mohammad Nazeer found her body after receiving a phone call from her father, who lives in London, to say she had been killed.

The initial postmortem report said that Mayra had received two bullets, one to her neck and another to her arm.

Mayra Zulfiqar’s funeral took place in Lahore, while a special memorial service has been held at a mosque in Hounslow, west London. Her brother Faizan Muhammad said his father had left for Pakistan

The deceased woman had arrived from the UK, where her family is settled, some two months back and shared the upper portion of the rented house with a friend. Police have taken her housemate into custody as part of the probe.

Late on Monday, Defence-B police registered a First Information Report (FIR) against two purported friends of Mayra on murder charges on the complaint of the deceased woman’s uncle.

In a statement, the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office said, “our thoughts are with the family at this difficult time. We are urgently seeking more information from the local authorities.”

Man charged with murder after he wakes from 7-month coma

A 21-year-old man found himself in a strange situation when he woke up from a seven-month coma, he found homicide detectives around him when he opened his eyes. The detectives were reportedly there to charge him with the murder of his girlfriend.

As per details, Weijie went into a coma with critical head injuries last June after falling from the fourth floor balcony of his apartment in Wolli Creek, in south Sydney, Australia.

The next-day when the police visited his house for investigation, they discovered the dead body of his 19-year old girlfriend there.

It is not yet clear whether he intentionally fell from the apartment but Detective Inspector Robert Alison said “witnesses told us he fell from the fourth floor of a common area, so it was either misadventure or a suicide attempt”.

“He is very, very lucky to be alive,” added Detective Inspector Alison. “Most people would have not survived.”

The alleged killer was in a coma for almost seven months.

He and his girlfriend, hailing from China, had been together for two years and were studying in Australia on student visas. Detective Inspector Alison acknowledged how difficult the incident was for Pan’s family, who were unable to attend her funeral due to COVID-19 travel restrictions.

“It is horrific. I really do feel for the family,” Alison said. “The distance being so far away makes it even more difficult for them. But we are working closely with them.”

He has been refused bail and is due to face court via video link on Wednesday.

  • PIC attack ‘agitator’ Dr Irfan was accused of murder in 2018: report

The main character behind the clash of lawyers and doctors at the Punjab Institute of Cardiology (PIC), Dr Irfan, was earlier nominated as the main accused in the murder case of a Christian who was tortured to death by doctors at the Services hospital Lahore last year, Pakistan Today reported.

According to the details, Dr Irfan was nominated among the four doctors in FIR [First Information Report] “No. 163/18” registered with the Shadman Police for torturing Sunil Saleem, to death.

According to the FIR, Anil Masih — Sunil’s brother — has stated that he, his brother Sunil and other relatives had taken their pregnant sister Kiran Kashif to the emergency labor ward of the Services hospital on March 26, 2018, because she was suffering labor pains.

Anil said, “Kiran went to the doctor on duty, Dr Saira, who was playing with her cell phone while sipping on tea. Dr Saira told Kiran to wait outside until she finished her tea. We waited for some time, but since Kiran was experiencing severe pain, she again went inside the ward to request for immediate attention.”

Anil Saleem added that as soon as Kiran approached Dr Saira, she started cursing her for not waiting and told a nurse to attend her.

“When my sister protested against the rude behavior, the doctor started slapping her, throwing her on the floor,” he said, adding that she asked my sister how dare a Chuhri [a derogatory term for Christians] question her order?.

Anil said, “On hearing the ruckus we entered the ward, but as soon as she saw us, Dr Saira shouted to the other doctors and security guards to lock the doors from the inside and teach these Christians a lesson”.

“Around 15 to 20 paramedical staff and security guards and eight to 10 young doctors, including Dr Irfan, Dr Salman, Dr Hasan and Dr Sahi lunged at us with iron rods, chairs, leather belts and other things and started beating us,” Anil added.

He said “Sunil, a police constable in the National Highway and Motorway Police, tried his best to placate the assailants but they continued to beat him mercilessly, kicking and punching him in the groin and chest until he fell unconscious.”

“Sunil died after a delay in treatment and due to lack of timely emergency medical assistance”, Anil said.

“We had pardoned the accused doctors after pursuing the case for a year”, reports quoted Anil as saying.

It is important to mention here that Dr Irfan’s speech, which went viral on social media a few days before the attack was the core reason behind the clash between doctors and lawyers at the PIC.

Dr Irfan in the video was seen narrating an encounter with some lawyers in front of a group of medical and paramedical staff of PIC, where he said that a group of lawyers had gone to the inspector general (IG) of police and told him to charge “two doctors” under Section 7 of ATA.

The doctor narrated that the IG had refused while the lawyers had urged him to press charges, saying “they could save face” that way.
