‘Don’t give Pakistan any animals’: Nadia Jamil slams Sri Lanka’s offer to send elephants

After the tragic death of Karachi Zoo’s ailing elephant Noor Jehan after years of neglect and abuse, Sri Lankan authorities announced that they were donating two elephants to Pakistan. According to Geo News, Sri Lankan Honorary Counsel Yasin Joya announced that one will be given to Karachi Zoo and the other one to Lahore Zoo.

Celebrities like veteran actress Nadia Jamil spoke out against this decision, slamming the Pakistani government for providing poor facilities for the animals that had led to Noor Jehan’s death.

“I beg Sri Lanka, DO NOT GIVE PAKISTAN ANY ELEPHANTS. NOT until Pakistan develops a policy to protect animals in its zoos and learns to take care of animals as they should be taken care of. Please. No more tragic deaths. Please spare more animals from suffering like Noorjehan.”

Other celebrities like Anushay Ashraf and Ahmed Ali Butt mourned the loss of Noor Jehan, and slammed the Karachi authorities for their limited resources which had led to the neglected conditions of animals at Karachi Zoo. In a now-expired post on her Instagram stories, Ashraf pointed out how zoos are not safe places for animals, and should not be entertainment facilities for humans:

“Another reminder for the govt that zoos are a place where animals are kept in captivity for our entertainment. This narrative cannot work in 2023. Am sure they tried their best with Nuri, but the concept is faulty to begin with. No one trusts the animals are getting the best possible care anyway. And chargingn money to see animals behind cages is a narrative the world has grown out of.”

Singer and actor Ahmed Ali Butt slammed the decision to import elephants from Sri Lanka, because as he wrote:

“We don’t deserve a zoo, just like everything else in this country, animals and their care is the least of our worries. This is just a feather in our incompetetnt cap.”

  • Nadia Jamil extensively scrutinises Danish Taimoor’s ‘Kesi Teri Khudgarzi’ character

Nadia Jamil extensively scrutinises Danish Taimoor’s ‘Kesi Teri Khudgarzi’ character

ARY drama serial Kaisi Teri Khudgarzi just aired its second last episode recently and it has naturally left the viewers in an informal panel of their own, discussing the trajectory of the drama. Actor Nadia Jamil shared her thoughts on the show and called out the male leads for being cloaked with toxic masculinity. She said that our dramas are setting the bar too low for heroes.

Kaisi Teri Khudgarzi stars Danish Taimoor (Shamsher), Dure Fishan (Mehak), Nauman Ijaz (Dilawar), and Atiqa Odho (Shamsher’s mother). The drama is about the son of a business tycoon, Shamsher, falling in love with Mehak, who belongs to a middle-class background. His family does not approve of their relationship and drama ensues.

On Friday, she retweeted a tweet by journalist Fifi Haroon describing the drama as ‘well developed’, saying it was very much possible for Mehak to fall for the first man she gets close to despite all his red flags. Jamil responded by bringing up all the messed up things the male lead has done to manipulate the woman he loves into staying with him.

In response, the journalist said that her point was not to romanticize the behaviour, to say that it wasn’t “implausible” for a girl with such a background to develop feelings for a guy like that.

The Mujhay Jeenay Do actor said that though she is horrified, it is entirely plausible that she did. “Many many women forgive their abusers. Low worth. The ultimate fantasy being validation from the abuser,” she wrote, adding that what was actually implausible was the personality change the guy went through “from the extreme devil to extreme angel”.

Referring to real-life cases of abusive men, she said that compared to other horrible crimes, Shamsher could be considered a hero, which sets such a low bar for men.

She affirmed that it was Stockholm syndrome on the woman’s part and said it was entertaining since there was some sense of justice around the end. Calling toxic masculinity “nauseating”, the Behadd actor said that so many dramas propagate it, such as Habs starring Feroze Khan and Ushna Shah and Fraud starring Saba Qamar, Mikaal Zulfiqar and Ahsan Khan.

She criticised Shamsher’s “change”, terming it “a bit far fetched”. Bringing up his obsessive codependent love, she also called out Mehak’s father for the toxic elements in his personality. “CONSTANT crying about being a dad of daughters. That was the worst. Much as I love the actor playing the dad — and he’s acted well. But those dialogues against being a dad of two daughters, uff.”

Pressure the govt to release Joyland: here is how to do it

The government of Pakistan has stopped the release of Saim Sadiq’s Oscar contender “Joyland” for containing “highly objectionable” material.
An order dated Nov. 11 from Pakistan’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting says that the country’s censor board had granted a censor certificate to the film on Aug. 17. But it has since reversed the decision.

“Written complaints were received that the film contains highly objectionable material which do not conform with the social values and moral standards of our society and is clearly repugnant to the norms of ‘decency and morality’ as laid down in Section 9 of the Motion Picture Ordinance, 1979,” the order states. “Now, therefore, in exercise of the powers conferred by Section 9(2) (a) of the said Ordinance and after conducting a comprehensive inquiry, the Federal Government declares the feature film titled ‘Joyland’ as an uncertified film for the whole of Pakistan in the cinemas which fall under the jurisdiction of CBFC with immediate effect.”
The ban has caused outrage on social media with citizens denouncing the decision.

Actor Nadia Jamil has shared things we can do to put pressure on the government to help Joyland:

Use the hashtag #releasejoyland on Twitter every time you tweet about the film.

Tag the following accounts on Twitter every time you post: @MoIB_official (ministry of information and broadcasting) @marriyum_A (Marriyum Aurangzeb)
