  • ‘Seamless is an illusion’: Natasha on balancing motherhood with a career

Make-up Artist Natasha Khalid recently opened up about juggling a career with motherhood, giving her followers an insight into what her typical day looks like.

“I’m routinely asked in comments and DMs about how it is I juggle everything I do so perfectly while looking good ‘all the time’,” said Natasha posting a picture of herself with her baby in her PJs. “My husband took this picture of me on an average night and this is my reality 99% of the time.”

The makeup artist continued: “Juggling baby duties while meeting deadlines, running masterclasses/student corrections, planning YouTube shoots, reworking Instagram/Facebook content while also planning home/baby schedules/duties is gruelling most days and I tend to get most of my work done at night once Noor sleeps as that is when I can quiet my mind to focus.”

“I tend to predominantly be in oversized pyjamas with a curly top knot and no makeup,” said Natasha further, adding: “In most of what I juggle and do, my time takes a major hit.”

Natasha said that the reason why she shares these snippets is “because it’s so easy to believe looking at a certain angle that we see on social media that people may have it ‘together’ or may not ‘struggle at all’.”

“What seems seamless is due to perfect lighting/filters but is all an illusion,” added Natasha. “Being a working woman and a wife/Mama and your own person is a full-time job and to me, this picture right here is what is ‘imperfectly perfect.”

“For all those women who follow me and find themselves in the same boat, remember this is reality and the rest of it is fun but always a curated illusion,” said the makeup artist.

Mahira Khan, who is single mother, commented on Natasha’s post saying: “I want a baby, [in] my arms.”

Other mothers also thanked Natasha in the comments section for sharing her experience and giving them confidence and support.

Last year, after giving birth Natasha shared an endearing message for all new mothers out there highlighting body positivity and the pressure women face after giving birth.

Karachi’s top salons opt to remain closed

While most salons across the country have opened their doors for business with the necessary SOPs in place, two of Karachi’s leading salons, Natasha’s Salon and Bina Khan, have decided to remain closed despite permission from the Government and the Supreme Court to resume business.

Natasha Khalid of Natasha’s Salon and Bina Khan announced on social media that they will not be opening their salons due the continuous increase in corona cases.

“We have since yesterday received a barrage of calls asking if we’re open for services for Eid, mostly because the Supreme Court of Pakistan has ordered ‘resumption of normalcy’,” wrote Khalid.

“First things first. Nothing is normal or back to normal! We have just been allowed to open shop & remove all corona-related limitations in the midst of a peak.”

“This is being done due to enormous economical/social pressures, which have nothing to do with the fact that numbers of COVID-19 affectees are increasing on an hourly basis; that people both young and old, sick and healthy, are dying from it,” she remarked, adding, “We already have put extraordinary pressures on our health systems and are ever-increasingly encumbering hospitals and health workers with exponential risks.”

Urging everyone to stay home, Natasha wrote, “Blow-dry your hair at home this time and if you can’t, tie that loose braid. Have hair on your arms and legs. Or just shave. Get a facial with the help of a plethora of ‘at home facials’ available online and watch one of the dozens of tutorials to get ready this Eid.”

Announcing her decision, she wrote: “I will not risk my staff, myself, or anyone walking through my doors getting unwell. I am trying to generate cash from online classes to pay my staff and keep my business alive, but I will not risk opening my doors because I know I can’t guarantee 100% that someone will not get ill.”

Similarly, Bina Khan said that her salon will remain closed “because we care”.

In a note, Khan wrote that she spoke to a couple of doctor before making her decision and they all explained to her that “providing normal salon services undeniably comes with some risk”.

“I do not think that anything that goes on in a salon is an essential service so we have decided to keep our doors closed,” she stated, adding that her salon will open as soon as it’s medically advisable.

Like Natasha, Bina said that online classes are allowing her to generate income so she is able to pay her staff.

However, Bina said that she will make exceptions for her brides, but with strict precautionary measures in place.

“I will open for my brides when they come because I understand that their weddings have been scaled back so hugely that looking like a bride and feeling special is a service that has started to feel more essential than it normally is. I am willing to risk my health for these poor corona brides, whose dream days have been so severely tarnished. But I will go alone and will only ask one staff member to help, taking every precaution known to man while we do so,” wrote the makeup artist.

Meanwhile, other salons across the country have opened with the necessary precautions, including PPEs, sanitizers and masks, in place.

  • Natasha of Natasha’s Salon shares a body-positive message for new mommies

Natasha Khalid of Karachi’s renowned Natasha’s Salon shared an endearing message for all mommies out there highlighting body-positivity and the pressure women face after giving birth.

“I have always been in awe of those women I see that somehow seem to go back to being fit and look like they have it all together right after having a baby,” wrote the makeup artist. “Whilst I always wished them well I also realised the kind of pressure it put on all us women in general, as all of our journeys with our bodies are different and are not meant to be the same.”

Addressing all those who keep asking her how she looks so put together, Natasha wrote, “I want to tell all the women and mamas messaging me that I have not lost the baby weight, I have a mama belly and am softer all over. My focus right now is my breastfeeding and eating what I love and indulging. And that is okay.”

She continued, “Having a baby may be one of the hardest things we do as women because alongside the absolute joy is a loss of self, massive hormonal shifts, I am paranoid about protecting my baby all the time, I fight with my husband and mom most days and cry in the shower without fail every day.”

Along with her message, Natasha shared pictures of her in her “Sunday best, which is no makeup, her husband’s shirt, burp cloth, crumpled pyjamas, oil in her hair, Noor in her hands and a smile on her face.”

“I don’t have it all together and I don’t have all the answers. I am learning to be a mom alongside my Noor, falling apart most of the time but then getting up and trying again. To everyone who struggles, I feel you and send so much power and love to all mamas and women out there. We are absolutely powerful and incredible in every way, don’t let anyone make you feel any different,” she concluded.
