  • ‘Shrek’ director tackles taboo in Netflix fairy tale ‘Spellbound’

‘Shrek’ director tackles taboo in Netflix fairy tale ‘Spellbound’

Animated films tackling parent separation and divorce are few and far between.

While live-action kids’ classics like “The Parent Trap” and “Mrs. Doubtfire” have used the concept as a launchpad for humorous antics, animation has tended to steer entirely clear of the issue.

“Isn’t that funny… you can kill off a parent in a movie like ‘Lion King,’ or ‘Bambi,’” said Vicky Jenson, best known for co-directing “Shrek.”

“Disney moms are often dead — the only time anyone remarries is because the other spouse is dead. This topic of separation, of parents not being able to live together… it’s taboo.”

But in Jenson’s new film, “Spellbound,” a princess’s parents have been transformed by a dastardly spell into literal monsters.

It is an allegorical device that forces young Ellian to try to “fix” her mother and father, and their broken family.

“We encountered some resistance when we were looking for someone to help bring the movie to the world, a partner to distribute the movie,” Jenson told AFP.

“They all reacted the same way, like: ‘What a beautiful movie, what a great message.’ And then they ghosted us!”

The movie went through a number of different studios, including Paramount and Apple TV+, before ultimately landing at Netflix, which will release the film Friday.

“I credit Netflix for stepping up bravely and partnering with us on this,” said Jenson.

“In this environment, it does feel like stories that push the boundaries are more accessible on streaming.

“Theaters are kind of filled with superheroes right now… the big safe bets.”

    – ‘Monsters’ –

As the film starts, tenacious teen princess Ellian (voiced by Rachel Zegler) is desperately seeking a cure for the mysterious spell that has transformed her parents, Queen Ellsmere (Nicole Kidman) and King Solon (Javier Bardem).

To make matters worse, she must hide the whole mess from the oblivious citizens of Lumbria.

When the secret gets out, and panic spreads throughout the kingdom, Ellian is forced on a dangerous quest to undo the curse.

But even if she succeeds, she soon learns that her family may never go back to the way it once was.

To make Ellian’s reaction to her — literally — monstrous parents believable and accurate, filmmakers employed the consulting services of a family psychologist and therapist who specialized in divorce.

“Kids feel like it’s their responsibility to fix this. They don’t understand that something happened to their parents — they’re acting like monsters,” explained Jenson.

The director, and cast and crew, also drew on their own experiences, “because we all know our parents are monsters at one point — and as parents, we’re all monsters at one point,” she joked.

    – An inverse ‘Shrek’? –

The end result is a thoroughly contemporary parable, set in a magical fairytale kingdom.

That has clear echoes of Jenson’s smash-hit directing debut “Shrek,” but with cause and effect reversed.

“‘Shrek’ was the modern take on fairy tales. This was a fairy tale take on a modern story,” she said.

For Jenson and the filmmakers — including legendary composer Alan Menken, of “The Little Mermaid,” “Beauty and the Beast” and countless more — it was important to bring this “truth about family life” to the screen.

It “is there for so many of us, but hadn’t been approached as a myth or as a new fairy tale before,” said Jenson.

“Now, a new fairy tale is out there for that experience that so many kids, so many parents, so many families need help through.”

  • Imran Khan Returns to Bollywood with Aamir Khan’s romantic comedy on Netflix

Imran Khan Returns to Bollywood with Aamir Khan’s romantic comedy on Netflix

Bollywood perfectionist Aamir Khan is all set to direct a new romantic comedy for Netflix, bringing his nephew, actor Imran Khan, back to the screen after a nine year break from films.

In a recent interview with India Today Digital, Imran was asked what he was working on. “I don’t have a clear answer to that,” the actor replied. “Its not for lack of trying. I’m having these conversations with writers, directors, and producers. I’m trying to find something that really sparks.”

“At this time, I’m working with filmmakers on two tales that have kind of struck a chord with me, but they’re not quite ready to be developed into a whole project yet. So, I don’t have a proper film that I have signed or a show that I have signed that I’m committed to yet”, the Delhi Belly actor added.

Imran Khan last starred in films such as Katti Batti and Gobi Tere Pyaar Mein.

  • Punjabi boys just want to have fun: Wild Wild Punjab review

Punjabi boys just want to have fun: Wild Wild Punjab review

I recently watched ‘Wild Wild Punjab’ on Netflix and thoroughly enjoyed it. The film is  the story of a group of friends who embark on a riotous journey to crash their buddy’s ex-girlfriend’s wedding. Determined to seek closure and declare, “I am over you,” they set off on a mission to Pathankot, fueled by heartbreak and a few drinks. The cast, including Varun Sharma, Sunny Singh, Jassie Gill, and Manjot Singh, deliver impressive performances in this comedy. The film’s writers and directors, Luv Ranjan and Simarpreet Singh, deserve credit for giving new faces a chance to shine in roles that fit their characters perfectly.

The story is engaging, with the friends navigating their conflicting desires and misadventures, all while maintaining a light-hearted, comedic tone. The music in the film is exciting and enhances the film’s lively atmosphere. The film features upbeat tracks like ‘Meri Baggi Mera Ghoda’ and ‘Husn Irani,’ which add to the energetic vibe. The film’s message about the importance of friendship and adventure is valuable.

While the friends’ journey is entertaining, it also highlights the significance of embracing life’s chaos and unpredictability.

This could be a one-time watch film recommendation. ‘Wild Wild Punjab’ is a fun, colorful, and heartwarming film that you can enjoy with family but I will not recommend you to watch with family because of the slang language used in the film.

One drawback of the film, in my opinion, after the interval was becoming drag there were some extra scenes. The film can be a little short instead of dragging it.

  • ‘Sans par bhi tax ley lein,’ Sindh to tax Netflix subscriptions

‘Sans par bhi tax ley lein,’ Sindh to tax Netflix subscriptions

If you’re a Netflix user in Pakistan, get ready to pay more for the streaming service. The Sindh Revenue Board (SRB) has added new taxes to your subscription fees.
Starting now, Netflix users will have to pay a 3% sales tax on IT services. Additionally, if you’re making an international transaction to pay for your subscription and you’re a tax filer, there’s a five percent advance tax. On top of that, there’s a four percent card transaction charge when using debit or credit cards, plus a federal excise duty.

Out of all the over-the-top (OTT) streaming services, Netflix continues to be the most well-known. It offers highly regarded TV series, films, documentaries, and other original material in various genres.
The platform allows viewers to stream content on-demand over the internet to a variety of devices, including PCs, mobile phones, tablets, TVs, and consoles. While Pakistanis consume a lot of free content, many are happily paying for premium OTT services like Netflix.

Recently, a new Finance Bill was introduced in 2024 that imposes tax on tech companies like Netflix that earn income in Pakistan through digital means and presence, even without a physical establishment.
Last month The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has served a notice to Netflix for recovery of over Rs. 200 million in income tax.
Effective immediately, subscribers will see additional charges on their Netflix subscriptions. Here’s how the new taxes will affect the current subscription rates:

    Mobile Plan: PKR 250
    Basic Plan: PKR 450
    Standard Plan: PKR 800
    Premium Plan: PKR 1,100

Here are the Netflix subscription plans and their rates in Pakistan after the new taxes:

    Mobile Plan: PKR 324.80
    Basic Plan: PKR 584.64
    Standard Plan: PKR 1,039.36
    Premium Plan: PKR 1,429.12

These new taxes are part of the government’s efforts to generate more revenue from digital services. So, the next time you settle down for a Netflix binge, be prepared for these extra charges on your bill.
This new taxes significantly increase the total cost of Netflix subscriptions in Pakistan. This is something users need to be aware of when budgeting for their monthly entertainment expenses.

  • Ushna Shah loves Sharmin Segal’s performance in ‘Heeramandi’

Ushna Shah loves Sharmin Segal’s performance in ‘Heeramandi’

Actress Ushna Shah has come to the defense of Sharmin Segal, who faced criticism for her acting in the web series ‘Heeramandi’. Shah posted a tweet on X (formerly Twitter) writing, “Sharmin Segal underplayed Alamzeb but only slightly, which seems to be difficult to digest for an audience used to be a more dramatic style. The character would have been butchered had she over-played it, it would have become generic.”

“She mastered the Urdu dialect better than most Hindi speaking actors & the grain in her voice was spectacular,” Shah added.
Looking at British actor Jason Shah’s performance, who played Alastair Cartwright in the series, Ushna wrote, “The real tragedy is Cartwright not having an English accent; he was playing a British coloniser! Forget Received Pronunciation, he didn’t even bother forging a modern Brit accent? Even the English speaking Nawaabs should have had a trans-Atlantic-ish speak, similar to Jinnah, Gandhi, Nehru etc.” She added the hashtags ‘Heeramandi’ and ‘Sharmin Segal’.
Sharmin Segal is Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s niece.

The web series Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar, which co-stars Segal alongside Richa Chadha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, and Sanjeeda Sheikh in major roles, as well as Farida Jalal, Fardeen Khan, Shekhar and Adhyayan Suman, and Taha Shah, is available on Netflix.
