Netflix bows to Modi government’s demands

Netflix, an international streaming media service, has bowed to the Indian government and announced a withdrawal notice from the controversial web series.

There is a controversy in India over using the names of Bhola and Shankar for the hijackers in the web series IC814: The Kandahar Hijack, which was released last week on the platform.

The Indian government reached out to Netflix, calling out to change their names in the show.

In compliance, Netflix India’s head of content, Monica Shergill, responded, “For the benefit of audiences unfamiliar with the 1999 hijacking, the opening disclaimer has been updated… code names in the series now reflect those used during the event.”

In December 1999, an Indian Airlines flight from Kathmandu to Delhi was hijacked and taken to Amritsar, Lahore, Dubai and Kandahar. Maulana Masood Azhar, Ahmed Umar Saeed and Mushtaq Ahmad Zargar were released.

According to passengers on the plane and journalists who reported the incident, the hijackers used to call each other Chief, Doctor, Burger, Bhola and Shankar while talking to each other.

However, in a statement issued by the Indian government on January 6, 2000, the hijackers were identified as Ibrahim Athar, Shahid Akhtar, Sunny Ahmed Qazi, Mistry Zahoor Ibrahim and Shakir.

The drama is made by Anubhav Sinha and Trishant Shrivastava, starring actors Naseeruddin Shah, Pankaj Kapur, Vijay Varma, Arvind Swamy, Patralekhaa and Dia Mirza.

‘The audacity’: Never Have I Ever’s finale divides audience

    Warning: spoilers

The series finale for ‘Never Have I Ever’ aired yesterday, bringing fans to a conclusion that divided opinions. Devi finally graduated high school, resolving the mystery about who is the man she will end up with.

The series revolved around a messy kid Devi, who navigates love, peer pressure from belonging to an Indian family, and deals with the death of her father.

From Season 1, there were two men in Devi’s life, Paxton Hall-Yoshida and Ben Gross. We were led through a four season long will-they-won’t-they as Devi made her way through misunderstandings, hurried confessions and miscommunication to now finally watching a grown and less-chaotic Devi who finally chooses…

    Ben!

How did we get to this conclusion? Devi and Ben got intimate in the last season after which, the two remain awkward, drifting off, but eventually ending back together as friends. Devi ends up getting in to the college of her dreams: Princeton, with Ben’s help.

While packing for college, Devi misses Ben, who is in New York for a law internship. However, during her friend Nirmala’s wedding, Ben shows up at the last minute, with both deciding to give their relationship a shot.

Needless to say, this outcome did not sit well with a lot of fans, who criticised creator Mindy Kailing for hyping mediocre looking white men, and routinely depicting brown women who indulge in self-critical commentary and consistently put down their own culture and heritage in the shows.

Many pointed out that Devi’s conclusion with Ben was another domino in the long line of Kailing’s female leads hyping bare-minimum men, and putting down south asian men for the sake of appealing to a white audience.

But other users felt that the conclusion was satisfying and were happy that Ben and Devi went from being enemies to close friends and finally falling in love with each other.

  • Charles Sobraj, the true story serial killer in the Netflix series ‘The Serpent’, walks free after 18 years

Charles Sobraj, the true story serial killer in the Netflix series ‘The Serpent’, walks free after 18 years

French serial killer Charles Sobraj has been granted freedom from a 20 year prison sentence in Nepal. The Frenchman is now flying back to his home country.

The serial killer had been the inspiration behind the Netflix limited series “The Serpent” which narrated the string of murders Sobraj had committed in South Asia during the 1970’s.

Sobraj was nicknamed “The Serpent” because of his reputation as an escape artist and ability to hide with the help of disguises.

Sobraj confessed in 2004 to the murder of Canadian and American backpackers. Nepal’s Supreme Court had ruled that the serial killer could be released on account of his ailing health due to heart failure, good behavior and having completed his life sentence. In Nepal, life sentences are only 20 years.

Sobraj had previously been held in a high-security prison in New Delhi for two decades on suspicion of robbery, but he had been deported without charges to France in 1997. However, the Frenchman had later re-emerged in Kathmandu in September 2003. The serial killer has also been believed to be responsible for at least 20 murders in countries like India, Afghanistan, Thailand, Turkey, Iran and Hong Kong during the 1970’s.

  • Netflix introduces ‘add a home’ feature to prevent password sharing

Netflix introduces ‘add a home’ feature to prevent password sharing

Netflix has opposed password sharing for a while now since it allows multiple users to watch their favorite seasons on an account while paying only one subscription fee.

It had previously signaled about restricting the sharing of passwords, but users were convinced that it wouldn’t happen. Unfortunately, Netflix is now testing a feature to charge additional users.

Users can purchase additional ‘homes’ to share their Netflix account with by using the ‘add a home’ feature. Although there is an additional monthly fee for each home Rs670 ($2.99) on top of your regular subscription fee, this fee is still significantly less than the price of a full Netflix subscription, allowing a few households or users to save some money on Netflix.

Additionally, you can use the feature to watch Netflix while travelling on a tablet, laptop, or phone. According to Netflix, a new setting will soon be available that will allow users to manage where their accounts are being used and to instantly remove any additional homes.

The feature will go live on August 22nd, according to Netflix. When a user shares their account with another household, Netflix points out that it will not automatically add homes and charge a fee; instead, users will be prompted to add homes and consent to the additional fee.

The feature’s use is subject to a few restrictions. Depending on its tier, a particular account may only be able to add so many additional “homes”: A second home may be added to a Basic account, a Standard account, two, and a Premium account, three.

  • Video: Fox News host Laura Ingraham’s confusion over ‘You’ is the best thing you will see today

Video: Fox News host Laura Ingraham’s confusion over ‘You’ is the best thing you will see today

Fox News host Laura Ingraham is not generally known to be ‘funny’ but a viral clip from the November 15 episode of ‘The Ingraham Angle’ has grabbed the attention of Netflix’s show YOU fans. The video has generated a lot of laughs although it is obvious Ingraham didn’t realise she was being funny.

Ingraham was chatting with author Raymond Arroyo, a regular guest on her show, about the supposed popularity of “un-woke” television programming. Arroyo asserted, “There is a reason people are in love with ‘Yellowstone,’ Laura. It is an antidote to the politics and all those woke storylines in so many shows today.”

Then he added, “I was watching an episode of You, where measles came up.”

Ingraham interrupted him: “When did I mention measles?”

Arroyo was referring to the Netflix show You, and he kept repeating the name of the show to clear up the confusion. But Ingraham kept thinking he was talking about her show.

“We have never done a measles and vaccine episode,” she said. “Is this a joke? I don’t know what you are talking about.”

“It was on You,” Arroyo repeated. “It was on You.”

“Raymond, I have never had measles, what are you talking about?” she said. “This is stupid.”

    And it just kept going:

“It was an episode of a show, Laura.”

    “What’s it called?”

    You! You! It’s called You.”

“I’ve never done a show on measles!”

“It is a show called You on Netflix.”

“There’s a show called Laura Ingraham on Netflix … what are you talking about?”

    Have a look:

Penn Badgley, the star of You, even weighed in on the debate on Twitter, writing, “Definitely a bit. His delivery is great tho.”
