    Sanjay Leela Bhansali thought about including Pakistani actors in Heeramandi

    The much-hyped Netflix series ‘Heeramandi’, directed by renowned Bollywood filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali, is now streaming on Netflix. It marks Sanjay’s debut as a director on OTT platforms and features a stellar cast including Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Sanjeeda Sheikh, Richa Chadha, Fardeen Khan, Sharmin Segal and Shekhar Suman. The ‘Heeramandi’ team has been giving many interviews on social media and in the media as they promote the expensive project.

    Bhansali shared in an interview on YouTube that he once thought about casting top Pakistani actors for the series.
    “I thought about casting many actors over eighteen years. Initially, I considered Rekha Ji, Kareena, and Rani Mukherji. Later, I had Fawad Khan, Mahira Khan and Imran Abbas in my mind for ‘Heeramandi, but I ended up with this ensemble cast.”

    Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar is a visually stunning drama, easily identifiable as a Bhansali production. It tells the stories of courtesans, known as tawaifs, living in Lahore’s red-light district of ‘Heera Mandi’ during the Indian independence movement in the British Raj.

    Bollywood’s perfectionist Aamir Khan is grateful for the hospitality of the people of Indian Punjab while he was shooting ‘Dangal’ in 2016. Aamir Khan attended the Great Indian Couple Show where he said that during his stay in a Punjab village, he was touched by the locals’ simple yet profound gestures of respect.

    Aamir Khan said, “When I went to Punjab for the shooting of ‘Rang De Basanti,’ I was overwhelmed by the immense love and warmth received from the locals.”

    The Bollywood actor said that during the shooting of ‘Dangal,’ they were in a small village in Punjab. “I observed that in the mornings, people would stand outside their homes and greet the team with folded hands, while in the evenings, they would bid farewell with kind words.”

    He said, “The people there never bothered me nor did they stand in front of my car, they just greeted from a distance, and this had a great impact on me.”

    Aamir khan said, “I belong to a Muslim family, so I was not folding hands and saying Namaste. I am used to raising my hand and bowing my head, the way Muslims greet each other.”

    Renowned Indian film director, producer and screenwriter was worried about the reaction from the first wife of Punjabi singer Amar Singh Chamkila at the film screening of the biopic made on the musician’s life. According to a source that talked to Indian media outlet Zoom, Imtiaz Ali was concerned over the film’s reception among the singer’s close relatives, especially his first wife.

    Imtiaz Ali said, “Chamkila’s family attended the screening. His first wife, Gurmail Kaur, and Amarjot, along with Chamkila’s son Jaiman Chamkila and daughters were all present. As I watched the film, Chamkila’s first wife sat beside me. I wondered about the sensitive scenes in the movie and if I should retreat before she felt uncomfortable or reacted in any way.”

    The director expressed happiness with how Chamkila was portrayed, as they hoped the audience would like it.
    He said, “I could have judged him for many things he did, but I chose to leave it as it is in the film. It’s actually a credit to the family that they understood.”
    The film’s cast features Diljit Dosanjh as Amar Singh Chamkila and Parineeti Chopra as his wife Amarjot, based on the real-life story of Chamkila and his wife, a singer known for lewd lyrics who was assassinated at a traditional Akhara (event) in 1988 in Punjab. They were shot, along with two other members of their group, as soon as they got out of the car they used to reach the venue.

    The killers remain unknown to this day.
